Update on our pup...

Sunday, November 19, 2017

It's been a while since I posted about our Peaches. She is doxie / beagle mix and as I've learned both breeds are prone to back problems.

Peaches has two slipped discs in her back and for the past month has been paralyzed in her hind legs and is incontinent. She is a trooper though and while this of course isn't ideal, it isn't stopping her either.

Our biggest issue with her right now is dealing with the incontinence. Diapers are wonderful but when you have a pup that has to drag her hind legs, the diaper drags with it and that makes it drag off.

I've made a drag bag....she still manages to get the diaper off and even putting a pee pad in it instead she somehow manages to get the bag all wet and very little on the pad. We're trying some homemade 'suspender like' shorts and the jury is out on that one. She isn't thrilled to have anything on her and manages an escape from most things.

Not only that....yesterday morning we could not find her! What the heck...we have a very small house and she just was not in any of the places we would expect. After about a ten minute search I heard my hubby call out "I've found her"....somehow, someway she managed to go down the 13 steps to our basement! At first we thought that she must have fallen but she was fine and wasn't shaking or anything so we think she just drug herself down...no idea why.

We tried having her sleep with us again last night, but not sure we can handle that. We were both afraid she would try to jump off the bed during the night and trying to keep her on a pee pad and her own restlessness made for poor sleep for all of us.

She is doing well and I am grateful...we just love this pup so much...oh and my hubby made her a wheelchair so she can go on walks...she loves that!

It's funny when she comes in from a walk and still has her wheels on she stands in one spot....we have to really encourage her to move. I hesitate to leave them on because she can't lay down or anything.

We are learning to express her bladder (YouTube is our friend) and feel that is going to be our answer to the problem...still can't keep her diapered. If she could stand on her back legs she wouldn't drag the diaper off, but with not using her hind legs it is almost impossible. I am glad we've found an alternative.

Thanks everyone for reading and all of your good thoughts for our Peaches!

Oh, my goodness! I love that you are doing your best for Peaches. And awesome job on the wheels for her. How is she doing now? This might be a stupid idea but if the wheels aren't troubling her can they be left on for any length of time - that way her diaper might not "drag" off? She'd also have her mobility back around the house.

Our wee Ginger had to wear doggy diapers for a short time when she first arrived and had a raging urinary track infection. She wasn't thrilled with the idea but they helped out.

Awww thank you for you update on Peaches .. So happy that hubby made a wheel chair for her ... that hopefully will make it easier for her .. Yea .. the diaper dragging off would be a problem. Could you make "overalls" for her and connect them to a halter ?? The wheelchair should work wonders as far as fixing that problem ..

Poor little girl .. but so happy she has a mom and dad like you .. My thoughts and prayers are coming for all of you !!!

My prior dog had her back go out while going up stairs. Not only did she go backwards down to the main floor, but she kept going down a second flight and hid in the basement. I think she was planning on laying down to die. I made a bed for myself down there and we spent the night together. She came out to see me and watched me all night.

You are saints to keep finding ways for your Peaches to continue to enjoy life as best she can. There is a special place in heaven for the three of you.
