Learning, and Memorizing, and Studying - Oh, My!

Started another group of students through math tutoring. My aim is to work myself out of a job by teaching them how to study, take notes, study, learn on their own, study, and memorize effectively and efficiently. The younger the student, the more open to the concepts they seem to be. I enjoy the challenge of the higher levels of math that the high school students bring to the table because often I'm relearning the material. They get to see how I approach the ideas and that it's possible to learn it.
Often I relate a concept back to something easier they've already done. Say, if a student was having trouble with rounding, I would give them an imaginary $20 and a list of items they could buy with it. They would have to round to estimate if they could buy it all. It's fun trying to figure out how to reach a particular student. Especially if they don't want to be there in the first place!
