The list.... When the day is over there is promise of a new day tomorrow. We can reflect on the good, bad and the what ifs. We can decide if we need to change to make more good, less bad and limit the need for what ifs. The only thing we can do is decide on personal change. We are always limited to ourselves when imposing change is the solution. Change is rarely if ever comfortable. We all have our comfort zone and change is clearly outside of it. In fact human nature will always default to a solution within our comfort zone even when it may not be the best choice. Guess that is why it is so difficult. Have you ever heard the statement “average”? No one wants to be average. I challenge you that we all have a personal average, even if it is above or below the standard “C” class of human ability. Change requires that you decide your personal average is not acceptable. What is your personal average? It is what falls into your comfort zone. Ahh..so to function at a level above my average I must introduce change! Let’s go to that list we all tend to make for New Year’s resolutions. You know the one it usually has items related to health, relationships and finance on it. I want to lose weight, get in shape, enhance relationships with family, friends or significant other, maybe save money, find a new job, start a business, and finish a class or something that will bring more financial benefit is on the list too. These lists get repeated every year, many items on the list never met. If human nature is to be safe and default to our comfort zone the ability to accept change and forge beyond average takes a very real relationship with ourselves. A commitment to decide my average is not good enough. I will live my life as an example and not a fraud based on the criteria and level of achievement only I can define. So what should be on the list and when should I start? Join Toastmasters, get Agile certified, track the food I eat ensuring I eat for nutrition with occasional entertainment, but avoid addiction. Relationships is one I need to work on too. With my partner, children, grandchildren, extended family, friends and others I have yet to encounter. I have not defined the how yet, but I need to get it on my list with actionable requirements on me to ensure I expand my average to a higher level. May 2018 bring health, wealth and happiness. May we find ourselves thankful for what we have and inspired to be the best people we can be! Defy your average!
