A Few of My Favorite Things, Kitchen Edition, Part 4

Tuesday, January 23, 2018

What's white, round, and hums like a fan? That's right, my dehydrator! The thing is almost twenty years old and still is going strong. When my kids were younger I made fruit leather all the time. It was how I got fruit in them - I told them they were fruit roll ups! And they were. Just healthy. Also on the menu was beef jerky for those times when we went on day trips and I didn't want to pack a cooler. We just ate dehydrated food.

These days I don't have access to farm fresh boxes of peaches, apples, and pears to make the fruit leather. Plus my kiddos are grown. But I found out my hubby likes the banana chips I make! My local grocery puts fruits and veggies that are on the verge on a special cart at really good prices. I load up when they put out 'nanas! I've also dried mushrooms, green beans, and oranges when they appeared on the cart. I could buy banana chips but this way I control the temperature, which can affect the vitamin retention I'm told. All together, it's been a great investment! Not just of money, but also time and effort.

My new range has a setting for drying foods, although I have yet to use it. Perhaps I should get with it.

We did apples and mushrooms last week. First time for mushrooms and not sure what to do with them.
