“Don’t be a toddler” and other good advice

Last week I participated in an online seminar about organizing. I was able to watch most of the videos; 3 each day for 5 days. Participants had 24 hours to view the videos for free (which is what I did), or purchase an unlimited pass. I got some great tips, and a couple of them came from Beth Anne Schwamber. Her seminar was titled Brilliant Baby Steps: How to re-order your life 10 minutes at a time.

The first tip was, “Don’t be a toddler.” This is very simple, yet kind of brilliant. When I spend time thinking of reasons I don’t want to do something I’m wasting time that could have been spent just doing the task. (Like toddlers who refuse to pick up their toys, throw a fit and often create an even bigger mess to clean up.)

This “Don’t be a toddler” tip is how I’ve approached the Kickboxing homework. I just take the time to do the homework (when my inclination is to complain about it). I have that trainer who encourages us to put a positive spin on things. For 5 weeks, rather than complaining about the exercises, I’ve been thinking and saying things like: “I’m getting stronger.” “I’m building muscle.” “I’m doing this!” It does make a difference in the way I feel about the camp and all that goes along with the program.

The second tip from the video is the phrase, “Perfect is stupid.” In this segment of the video, Beth Anne Schwamber said:
“You don’t become a better runner by studying running. You become a better runner by running more.
So just get out there and do the thing. Perfect is impossible. Perfect is stupid. Don’t even think about perfect. Just shut up and do it.”

This goes well with what our trainer tells us during class, “You get better by doing burpees. The more you do, the better you get at burpees.” The first week of class he told us, “Don’t worry about looking ridiculous. You do look ridiculous, because you don’t know the techniques yet. Each week you’ll get better because you’ll be using these techniques in every class.”

There was something very freeing about not worrying about looking ridiculous. That was the day I decided that doing this is more important than how I look as I exercise. I have my eye on the prize: the result - to get stronger and healthier, not the process.

medicine ball overhead throw with squat pick up (4 min)
