Will try again...soon

Friday, March 23, 2018

So just looked back on my last blog post from over a year ago and how depressed I was about what I was going through with not being able to lose the 20 or so pounds I had gained after quitting smoking. Turns out, as I finally found out at the beginning of this year, that the problem is my thyroid - and an autoimmune disease to boot. My PCP at that time had rolled his eyes at me when I told him I was pretty sure there was something up with my thyroid. Eventually he agreed to check more than just my TSH (which I have read can show as normal if you are a smoker!) He made me feel like a such a hypochondriac - even tho I had hair loss and weight gain and peeling and snapping nails - that I never went for the thyroid tests. I also never went back to that doctor - especially after he recommended Rogaine over testing my thyroid!!!

I had started on my keto journey back in November of 2017, before my new PCP decided to test my thyroid at the beginning of January this year. I had managed to drop 11 lbs on keto and then stalled. Have ANOTHER new doc (I think I hit the jackpot this time because he specializes in Functional Medicine and believes that most health issues are due to what we put in our mouths! YAY!)

So the stall has me depressed again. On top of that I am looking at a surgical procedure for a work related knee injury from over a year ago. I tried to forgo surgery - no such luck. I held out as long as I could with PT. On the bright side I get 6 weeks off from my job during the late spring. The down side is i will be fairly immobile for a while...MORE weight gain?

So, I am hitting a milestone birthday this weekend and have decided to HELL WITH ALL DIETING! At the beginning of April I will give keto another shot. Maybe if i stop it for a week it will break the stall.

Wish me luck...

Let me tell you my story:
I lost 60 pounds in 5 years after I vowed to lose 10 pounds a year in retirement. Then I fell last May. After 5 weeks in a nursing home wheelchair, then 5 weeks with my brother (a GREAT cook), and then the walker, the boot and a cane, I was up 30 pounds. I finished physical therapy Dec. 29 and found a personal trainer on January 4. Results of hard work with her, I am 15 pounds down today. My goal is to resume canoeing in June with portages, etc. I hope to spend two weeks in Canada with a women's tour of Sturgeon Lake in the Quetico Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada.

When your health care providers restore your health, you will be able to move forward. Spark People will "have your back" and lift you up when you ask. With many good wishes for luck and for a positive result.
