Saying Good-Bye

Wednesday, March 28, 2018

Let's just get this straight, the title was meant to be dramatic. I am not leaving and I am not saying good-bye (to you). I am saying good-bye to the two hundred and more Sparkfriends that I removed from my sparkfriends list last night. I have been at Sparkpeople for many years and had close to 500 friends. But as life imitates art, or in this case Sparkpeople imitates life, people come and go. Yesterday I removed all those people who had not updated their status in over 1000 days.

It was sad to say good-bye to quite a few of those people, many had kept me company over the first years here at Spark. We had shared stories, updated each other on our progress and connected through status updates, emails, Spark teams and challenges. In many ways we had become friends. A few still connect with me through Challenges on Fitbit. On the other hand there were also many people who had been a brief encounter with a chance hello. There was no connection, little more than a message on a Sparkpage and in a different way that is sad too.

I have to wonder what happened to my former Sparkfriends. I know a few of them were successful, achieved their goals and moved on. Many of them probably left as they found the commitment to weight loss through Sparkpeople to be challenging or just not their thing. Others may have given up and gone back to lifestyles that just aren't that healthy. And then there is the greatest fear I have for a few, are they watching us from up above? They were the few that been battling illness and I have wondered what happened. There have been others that were so committed and then they disappeared. Where did they go?

I will likely never have an answer to where they went but should they return I hope that they will give me a "hey, how ya doing?" and then like old friends I am sure we will reconnect.

As for you, the Sparkperson reading this, I invite you to friend me, or maybe you already have, either way thanks for being part of this journey and keep in touch. Don't be afraid to be like BDTHOM, who was my first ever Sparkfriend, and leaves a message on my Sparkpage that reminds me when I have been neglecting my health and been gone too long, or Ceri, who has been here as long as I, who always reminds me that there is another 5% Challenge happening. The list goes on and there are many more amazing people here. I hope for some of you I can be motivating, or helpful or just someone who listens, maybe even a friend. I hope you all find great friends here on Sparkpeople that make this journey to better health and fitness more attainable but definitely more enjoyable.

I think I might need to remove or declutter my friend page as well. Been here since 2011 and have seen friends drop off and yes, you do wonder what happened. emoticon

You have expressed my thoughts - it always amazes me how a person will join sparkpeople, join a few groups and never participate - you don't know if they have joined and left, or are just reading the messages without any comments.

I am adding you as a friend - I have been hear for more years than I can count - I joined way back left for about 6 months and rejoined - can't remember my original join date but have come across old messages on some teams that I am no longer involved with that date back 15 years 0 so a long time

I also decluttered many dormant friends just last month...sad to let them go, but life 'happens'. Nice to meet another Canuk and will definitely become an active Sparkie with you. Thanks for dropping by my blog today.

Well since you got rid of so many spark friends, I thought I'd take you up on the offer and add you as my new friend. You're welcome to add me to your list too. We're going to be team mates on the Teddy Bears so I'm all for cheering my team mates on!!!

Whew, you scared me with that title. I don't blame you for "decluttering." I don't have nearly that many Spark friends, but I deleted a few that don't even seem to have logged in for several years. I'll always remember the time in my first year of Sparking when I decided to delete someone, and she was highly insulted: "Why did you unfriend me!" she asked. I felt so bad.

emoticon How are you doing? I do hope you are ready for Spring 5% Challenge. I know I am.
Your blog is so spot on, my original SP team says we have over 14,000 members, I wanted to keep it going until the 5 year anniversary but for a while was writing notes to myself. But then, just like Magic, a fellow Sparker came back and was so happy I hadn’t given up!
A good friend that I met through Spark and meet weekly, an I have vowed that we will tell each other’s friends what happened if we should disappear from Spark!
    emoticon Glad your still here!

Well, I'm sure glad you are not leaving because I always find what you have to say "worth listening to". I have a question about the FitBit challenge - I have an older model which is limited in what it can do however if we are just counting steps it should work, right? Mind you I probably should find it first, blow the dust off of it, and charge it up before getting too excited.

If I were to purchase a new one is there a particular one you would recommend?

Thank you for not leaving us!

Oh, you haven’t blogged and I thought you were gone. It’s nice to know you’ve been here all along. I friended you. Now you have even more friends. I miss some of the Spark friends who have disappeared over the years, too. You can’t help but wonder what they’re doing or why they left.

I feel the same way about my friends here, wondering where they went and how they are doing now. Some I know have been dealing with things in life that take precedence over checking in on spark, and I hope that they are doing well and have faced those challenges. Others just piddled out or dropped off one day, and I worry/wonder (there should be a word that means that) about them.

You have been on my friends list for a long time (dating back to a 5% challenge long ago I think) but we've been "friends" from a distance. Both of us plugging along without much interaction. That's ok too, seeing your status/blog pop up on my screen reminds me that I'm not alone in this long-term journey - so thank you for that.

I know the feeling Andy. I am not going anywhere myself. I need to keep myself accountable and this FREE website does the trick.

I used to try to keep up to my SparkFriends too at one time, but they kept on drifting away at sea.
