1. Eat a high-fiber diet including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes.
2. Drink plenty of liquids.
3. Don't resist the urge to have a bowel movement.
4. Exercise regularly---at least 30 minutes a day.
A study of more than 46,400 male health professionals ranging in age from 40 to 75 at enrollment found eating poultry or fish once daily instead of red meat can reduce risk of diverticulitis by 20%.
