11/8/18 Blessed

Thursday, November 08, 2018

"I've seen better day, but I've also seen worse. I don't have everything that I want, but I do have all I need. I woke up with some aches and pains, but I woke up. My life may not be perfect but I am blessed."

"Well, this is awkward."

When I returned home from college for a break, I noticed a paper posted on the refrigerator. It listed some goals my dad had set for himself: Help wife more; lose weight; be more productive at work.

I promptly added: “Send Michelle money every month.”

A few days later my brother wrote: “Make payments on car for Jason.”

Then my boyfriend joined in with: “Buy Tom a Jeep.”

Finally my father added a new goal to his amended list: “Wean kids.”

It's STEM/STEAM Day! Today is to inspire kids to explore and pursue interests in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math. It's Abet and Aid Punsters Day! Tell all the puns and jokes you know; it's a day to laugh at a pun and not groan! It's Cook Something Bold Day (encourages you to try new and pungent recipes; fill the kitchen with those warm earthy aromas), Cappuccino Day (this favorite drink was created in 1600's Italy by a group of friars called the Capuchins), Ample Time Day (encourages you to reflect on your priorities, daily structure, and health to figure which tasks are truly necessary to your priorities and to let go of the tasks that don't contribute to your goals), Dunce Day (honors the death of John Duns Scotus, a Scottish philosopher in 1308, who formed the dunce cap as he theorized an increase learning potential as the cap would funnel knowledge to the learner; I'm not making this up, someone believes this day is worth celebrating), Harvey Wallbanger Day (a popular vodka drink of the 1970's; lots of origin stories but none proven to be true), Parents as Teachers Day (celebrates the organizations that offer parents as teachers services to support the growth of young children), X-Ray Day (honors Wilhelm Rontgen who discovered the electronic radiation in 1895; created accidentally, the radiation was called X-ray as in unknown radiation as Rontgen didn't known the cause), Usability Day (celebrates the profession of making things more usable such as usability engineering, and user-centered design), Town Planning Day (unites planners around the world and recognizes the contributions of planners to the success of towns), Cleaning Woman Day (started by author Gesine Schulze, honors the fiction character Karo Rutkowsky who, as a cleaning woman and detective, is everywhere but is overlooked and sees a lot which is perfect for a detective), Return Day (held in Georgetown, Delaware on the Thursday after an election; tradition came from the days before the internet when communications were not immediate; businesses and schools would be closed so people could gather to hear the results of the election), and Quality Day (quality engineers convene to discuss techniques of innovation and inspiration, striving to improve customer satisfaction). In 1971, Led Zeppelin released his "Stairway to Heaven" album.
