12/6/18 Stronger

Thursday, December 06, 2018

"The one who falls and gets up is so much stronger than the one who never fell."

"Now I know why they call it cable news. I want to choke them all with a cable."

In search of a Christmas tree, two clueless people ventured deep into the forest. After hours of braving sub-zero temperatures and biting wind, one turned to the other and wearily said: “I’m chopping down the next tree I see, I don’t care if it’s decorated or not.” (edited to protect a certain group of people)

It's Mitten Tree Day! Based on the book by Candace Christiansen, "Mitten Tree", today is about giving mittens and other warm clothing to those in need. The book is about an elderly lady who knits mittens each night and leaves them in the tree next to a bus stop so that kids without mittens can be warm. When she runs out of yarn, someone leaves yarn on her porch and she keeps knitting. It's St. Nicholas Day! One of the Christian saints, St. Nicholas is associated with Christmas time and is known for giving gifts and leaving coins in shoes. The Netherlands celebrated Sinterklaas yesterday as the eve of Saint Nicholas Day. It's Miner's Day (honors the accomplishments and sacrifices of all miners around the world; there are a lot of products that would not be available if we didn't have miners), Gazpacho Day (a special cold vegetable soup from Andalusia in the southern part of Spain), Microwave Oven Day (where would we be without our microwaves!;in 1945, Raytheon filed a patent for a microwave oven and produced the Radarange, a microwave which stood almost six feet tall, and cost $5,000—$54,000 in 2016 dollars. Raytheon licensed its patents to Tappan, which introduced a microwave in 1955, which was still too large and expensive for everyday home use. It cost $1,295, which is almost $12,000 in 2016 dollars. In 1965, Raytheon acquired Amana, and introduced a countertop microwave in 1967 for $495, which is still about $3,600 in 2016 dollars), Pawnbrokers Day (even though pawnbrokers have a rather shady reputation, they do provide a service for those who need cash and those who are looking for a bargain), Put on Your Own Shoes Day (because there is no clear origin for this day, there are a few different interpretations; it's a day to give shoes to those in need; it's a day to encourage little kids to learn how to tie their own shoes; it's also a day to walk in your own shoes and be mindful of your own business rather than walking in someone else's shoes), and White Ribbon Day in Canada (also known as National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women; this day commemorates the anniversary of the 1989 Montreal massacre when 14 women at the Ecole Polytechnique, singled out for their gender, were shot and killed). In 1865, in the U.S., the 13th Amendment was adopted which abolished slavery. Finland celebrates its Independence Day which commemorates their 1917 declaration of independence from Russia. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer debuted on TV in 1964.
