My Sewing Mentors For Big Projects

Perhaps you've wondered How I ever got to make such lovely clothing.
It all started when Babette asked John and me to take her place giving cemetery tours at the Franklin Pierce Homestead. It would fill a weekend, and we were glad to do it. Then we realized that we needed to dress in vintage clothing. And so the journey starts making the skirt at the top of this blog. What a very long project!
Our first few years, we took on the personas of The Governor John Butler Smith and his wife Emma E Lavender Smith. With lots of help from Suzie and Babette, I made the skirt. John bought an old tux at a thrift store, and we were in business!
Then we took on the personas of The Old Governor Benjamin Pierce and Anna Kendrick Pierce, the parents of our US 14th president, Franklin Pierce. The dress took me several months to make, and Benjamin's front drop button down breechers took me six months.
My mother taught me the basics, but Babette and Suzie have taught me things that I never expected, and helped me to create some magnificent outfits!
