May 20, 2019 WHEN WE COVET

There are times when we are talking with a friend or searching the Internet and we see someone who has a little more than we do. We see their home, family or lifestyle and it appears better than ours. If we focus on what they have too long we may get consumed by it and even become jealous of what they have. When we worry about why we don’t have what others have, it consumes us. When we worry because we are jealous of others, we are living in sin. Jealousy leads to wrong thoughts, words and actions. Jealousy leads to disorder and evil of every kind.

SCRIPTURE:
James 3:16 “For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind.” (NLT)

ACTION STEPS:
1. Write who you may be jealous of.
2. List the things others have that you want.
3. Know God doesn’t want you worrying about what others have.
4. Thank God for what He has blessed you with and turn away from jealous thoughts.

PRAYER:
Dear Lord, we don’t want to be worried or jealous about what our friends have. We know we are all different and we are all blessed. Help us to focus on what we do have. We know comparing ourselves to others only leads to worry and jealousy. We know worry and jealousy only leads to seeking the things of the world rather than You. Help us to stay focused on You so we don’t live in worry coveting things we don’t really need. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

REMEMBER:
Acts 8:22-23 “Repent of your wickedness and pray to the Lord. Perhaps he will forgive your evil thoughts, for I can see that you are full of bitter jealousy and are held captive by sin.” (NLT)

1 Corinthians 3:3b “You are jealous of one another and quarrel with each other. Doesn’t that prove you are controlled by your sinful nature? Aren’t you living like people of the world?” (NLT)

When we covet what others have, we are living in disobedience to God.

Exodus 20:17 “You must not covet your neighbor’s house. You must not covet your neighbor’s wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.” (NLT)

If we want a peaceful life, we need to stop worrying about what others have and start being thankful for what we have.

FOCUS:
Proverb 14:30 “A peaceful heart leads to a healthy body; jealousy is like cancer in the bones.” (NLT)
