having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever.
1 Peter 1:23
The oldest mature seed that has germinated and produced a plant was a 2,000-year-old date palm seed excavated from Herod's palace at Masada in the Judean wilderness. Most home gardens have discovered that the average vegetable seed has a viability range of less than five years. Experienced gardeners always mark the date of purchase on new seed packs to ensure having viable seeds.
The biblical word for "viable" is incorruptible, the word Peter used to describe the Word of God. In the garden, new life comes only from incorruptible seed. The same is true in the kingdom of God. Rebirth in a garden happens when a seed springs to life from moisture and warmth. Rebirth in the kingdom of God happens when the Holy Spirit uses the Word of God to quicken the gift of faith in the human heart. At least eighteen times in the New Testament, new birth is used to describe spiritual regeneration, or new life. Therefor, new life cannot spring from a corruptible seed--an untrue word about God.
Have you been born again "through the word of God?" If so, it is because you believed what the Bible says about Jesus Christ. New life can only grow to maturity as the incorruptible seed of Scripture does its transforming work in the Christian's Life.
