National Aunt and Uncle's Day

Tuesday, July 30, 2019

This is our assignment for the Aspire and Inspire sparkteam: July 26th is National Aunt and Uncle's Day. Aunt and Uncle’s Day is observed annually on July 26th. Through holidays, special family events and sometimes sleepovers, aunts and uncles often hold a special place in our hearts. They fill our lives with fun, laughter, love and incredible memories. Do you have a special aunt and/or uncle, or several? Tell us about your aunt(s) and uncle(s). What have they done for you? What have you learned from them? Why do you consider them special?

The aunt that I am closest to is my mother’s sister. She has taught me about resilience. Her husband suffered from dementia, and she had to take care of him until his death. She moved away from her hometown to live where my parents, my sister, and I live, so she could be close to family. Now she lives in a nice retirement community, and she has started a new life for herself. She does volunteer work and other activities, and she adopted a cat. She even travels regularly back to her hometown to visit her friends. She is a very resilient person, and I admire her for that.

My mother was my father's caregiver when he developed Alzheimer's. Resilience doesn't begin to describe the situation.

The aunt/uncle relationship is one I never had and sorely miss. I only have one aunt, who I love dearly, but we were never close. Largely because she lived (and still does) 500 miles away when I was growing up, and also because my parents just never encouraged more than a distant relationship. I have no nieces or nephews, so my kids have no cousins. I definitely miss that sort of relationship. My daughter will become an aunt soon because her husband's sister is having a baby. I think she is really excited.
