Hickok Family Tree 1

Monday, September 09, 2019

Years ago I had all of the info on the Hickok's, going all the way back to England. I found a website that was free. I printed out all of the info just in case I needed it. I recorded everything I found in Ancestry.com. I took a break for a year, and let my Ancestry membership expire. I accidentally spilled Tea on my family tree papers. I thought "no worry. I will go back to that site, or Ancestry, and print the info out again, so I tossed the papers. When I went back the free sight was gone. I think Ancestry has gobbled most of the free sites up. Just my opinion, I could be wrong. So I go into Ancestry to print out what I had there, and half of my information was gone. I wasn't real happy about that. So I more or less have started over to make sure the info I had was right, and continued on from there. To make a long story short, I went as far as I could go for now. I got all the way back to 1543, England. My 10th Great Grandfather. Here is my tree. I sure hope you can read the names etc. because they like to shrink pictures in here. Just to be safe I will name who is who.

Starting with me, born in 1950. California
My Dad: Donald Lee Hickok 1913-2002 Born Kansas City Mo. Died Granada Hills California
Grandfather: Eugene Clyde Hickok 1886-1925 Born Kansas Died Kansas City Missouri
Great Grandfather: Harrison D Hickok 1840-1913 Born Pennsylvania Died St Jo Missouri
2nd Great Grandfather David Nicholas Hickok 1806-1892 Born Vermont Died St Jo Missouri

I will be back with the rest. Pets are demanding breakfast hehe.

What a bummer that the free site is gone! I suspect you are right on your theory. Ancestry makes a lot of money charging people for that info.

Great job, but man, that's frustrating. It's like everything in the "cloud" has to be $$$ anymore. grrrrr...

It's fantastic that you got back as far as 1543, Jeanne. Can't wait to read about your English ancestors!

Ah yes, the big gobble up the little. It’s too bad that all that saved info got lost. That was time consumed that you won’t get back. It seems to be an enjoyable journey for you though, so there’s that.
Thanks for sharing all this, I’m sure that I’m not the only one who’s been inspired to “look into things” by this.

I have enjoyed reading your about your family from way back when. Sorry that you weren't able to retrieve all the information you had found before you took your break. My husbands cousin has been doing genealogy from both sides of her family, and she has taken breaks from it too.

I have learned I don't throw out anything until I have confirmed the info especially like a family tree. My mom has a program on the family tree but lost all that info and hasn't gotten any back. Keep looking and you may yet find another branch! You have done well.

I know what you mean. I don't trust any online service to keep my info. You simply have no control over what happens to the info... or if the company goes out of business, etc. Everything I look up, I copy into Word documents for myself and I save the jpg files to my computer. At least I know I've got it.

So awesome all the info you've learned so far! emoticon

This is way kool emoticon It's difficult finding a "free" anything anymore, unfortunately. Once a company sees they can profit off of us, they do! You're doing a great job so keep up the good work and save it or share it with a family member so that won't happen again. I'm sure, you've learned that lesson. emoticon emoticon and emoticon emoticon

I agree about Ancestry, they have a monotone information. Glad you were able to get some I formation. Your ancestors are sure more interesting than mine! Thank you for sharing. emoticon emoticon
