For you, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, and abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You.
Psalm 86:5

When a young man massacred nine Christians in Charleston, South Carolina, journalists were amazed at how quickly the families of the victims expressed their willingness to forgive the shooter. The loved ones certainly didn't condone the man's actions or excuse him from the consequences of his crimes. But they didn't want to harbor lifelong animosity, and their statements left reporters speechless. One mourner. whose 70 year old mother had perished, told the shooter, "You took something very precious away from me. I will never talk to her ever again. I will never be able to hold her again. But I forgive you and have mercy on your soul."
When you express forgiveness toward others, you're simply passing on the forgiveness you have experienced personally from God. When we come to Him in confession and repentance, He grants abundant pardon; He forgives our debts. Knowing God has forgiven your sin provides a way for you to release any bitterness you feel toward others.
