Explanations Not Excuses

I remember years back when I was working (retail), my boss was constantly calling me on the phone or on the overhead loud speaker. One day I kept hearing my name being paged and I was with a customer that had a problem and could not go to my bosses office. I finally got to a phone and called him to let him know I would soon be up to his office. I could tell he was angry.
When I got to his office, the first thing he said was, "I don't want to hear any excuses." I said to him, "I don't have an excuse, but I do have an explanation if you want to hear it." I think he was dumbfounded. He was so used to people giving him excuses, that I don't think he was used to anyone offering an explanation. He was calm after I said that to him. I was able to tell him what had happened and found out what he needed.
I realised in retail, if your boss is yelling at you, someone higher ranked is yelling at him.
I said all of that to say this. We all should look at the excuses we put in front of ourselves. Maybe we should look to an explanation instead. With an explanation we might come up with a better solution.
