Hot Topic at TOPS & Puppy Socialization

Tuesday, October 29, 2019

At the TOPS meeting today I got two awards (charms) - July Star of the Month & Holiday Loser. I am still learning about TOPS and didn't know they did this, but it's fun. This weeks weigh-in I am down 4 pounds from last week, so I was the top loser for the week.

I gave a talk to the group on a topic near and dear to my heart The Last 10 Weeks of the Year!

This is not a Self Fulfilling Prophecy, but today your weight is likely the lowest it will be for the rest of the year UNLESS you take immediate action. Events like Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, New Year's, parties, etc. are all occasions where we tend to overeat or make poor food choices. “Anything that happens in these next 10 weeks before New Years, on average, takes about five months to come off,” said Prof. Brian Wansink of Cornell’s business school.

1) rather than make a New Year's resolution to lose weight, make a resolution to not gain weight the last 10 weeks of the year

2) weigh yourself 4 or 5 times a week to increase awareness of where your weight is going

I did some research to round out my topic and coincidentally Prof. Brian Wansink is a longtime advocate of TOPS and wrote the foreword for the TOPS lifestyle guide, Real Life: The Hands-on Pounds-off Guide.

The talk was very well received and after my talk, we discussed how to better handle holiday eating.

I looked on youtube and found some Prof. Brian Wansink presentations. Right now I am listening to Slim By Design.

Last night we went to puppy socialization at the veterinarian's office. It's one of the most fun things ever. There were 15 puppies and they got distributed into various rooms based on their size or age or personality, etc. Rebel started with the newest puppies and played hard with Dahlia, a very tiny Pomeranian/Havanese puppy. Rebel is 11 pounds so she seemed huge. Despite their size difference, those two played hard, but the other puppies were shy and hung the corner. Next Rebel went into a room with dogs her size, but they weren't playful. After the raucous play she had with Dahlia she wore herself out and slept in this morning.

Here is a picture of Rebel taken 10 days ago.
