One of my big goals for this month was to up my base pace in Orangetheory. As a very quick recap, Orangetheory focuses on interval training on the treadmill and rower, so there are three paces that people use during the workout, base, push, and all out. Your base pace is considered the most important because it is the one that is really going to do the most to improve your VO2 max and cardiovascular fitness overall. It's also the pace that your push and all out paces are based off of. Your push pace is 1-2 mph over your base and your all out pace is at least 2 mph over your base pace. So upping your base, ups the other two as well.
I've really been trying to up my push and all out paces over the past few weeks to get myself ready to up my base. And this morning I did it! I moved from a 12 min mile base pace (5 mph) to a 11:19 min mile base pace (5.3 mph). And correspondingly my push moved from a 10 min mile to a 9:30 and my all out moved from a 8:34 to an 8-7:30.
It's been a long time coming and I still have a long way to go. And I'm still really slow. But I can start to see myself getting back into decent running shape. My goal for next year is by 31 December 2020 to make my current All Out pace my Base.
Slow and steady might win the race, but I'm still going to try and get faster. ;)
