12 O’Clock High

12 O’Clock High, 1964-67, ABC
Based on the 1949 movie of the same name. Set in WWII, the show followed the exploits of the (fictitious) 918th Bombardment Group (Heavy) of the U.S. Army Air Forces (USAAF), equipped with B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, stationed at Archbury Field, England (a fictitious air base). The writers kept the names of many of the characters in the movie, with new actors. The second year, ABC decided they needed a younger audience, so they had General Savage (played by Robert Lansing) killed off. The fans were not that excited about the changes. I liked the show (can’t say anything about the movie, as I spent most of 1949 as a fetus.) Weirdly, I remembered Robert Lansing as Robert Conrad (from the Wild, Wild West show) - I was getting frustrated with not being able to see a picture of Conrad - doh!

In Color, Jamey Johnson, 2009

I said grandpa whats this picture here
Its all black and white
It ain't real clear is that you there?
He said yeah I was eleven

Times were tough back in '35
That's me and uncle Joe just tryin' to survive
A cotton farm, in a great depression.

If it looks like we were scared to death
Like a couple of kids just trying to save each other
You should've seen it in color.

(And before you laugh at that old fart wobbling around with his VFW hat on
Just remember ..............................
He was probably once a bigger Badass than you will ever dream of being!)

Oh and this one here was taken over seas
In the middle of hell in 1943
In the winter time, you can almost see my breath

That was my tail gunner ole Johnny Magee
He was a high school teacher from New Orleans
And he had my back right through the day we left.

If it looks like we were scared to death
Like a couple of kids just trying to save each other
You should've seen it in color.
A pictures worth a thousand words
But you cant see what those shades of gray keep covered
You should've seen it in color

This one is my favorite one.
This is me and grandma in the summer sun
All dressed up the day we said our vows.
You can't tell it here but it was hot that June
And that rose was red and her eyes were blue
And just look at that smile I was so proud.
That's the story of my life right there in black and white
If it looks like we were scared to death
Like a couple of kids just trying to save each other
You should've seen it in color.

A pictures worth a thousand words
But you cant see what those shades of gray keep covered
You should have seen it in color.
You should have seen it in color
Yeah a pictures worth a thousand words
But you cant see what those shades of gray keep covered

You should have seen it in color
Yeah a pictures worth a thousand words
But you cant see what those shades of gray keep covered
You should have seen it in color

(During the Second World War the Germans built fake wooden airfields with fake wooden planes. I Allies let them build it and then dropped a wooden bomb on it) *True!
