Have you ever wanted to impress someone (or group of someones), whether with your sports skill, your understanding of a craft, or your expertise in the kitchen? Well, maybe because I do so comparatively little of it, Today I wanted to impress my friends at church with a special potato dish at our ladies’ luncheon ...
They are all such good cooks, and I had managed to find a great deal on several bags of those cute little multi-variety fingerling potatoes (even the dark blue ones), so I thought I would “wow” them with some yummy roasted smooshed potatoes..... and I even made a test batch Thursday night, just to make sure I knew what I was doing (which turned out FANTASTIC).
Pride Goes Before a Fall
As with many stories of mine which focus on the kitchen, I must now be brutally honest and confess that, although I tried to exactly duplicate my former success, it was not to be... because I had such nice friends at the luncheon nobody jumped up and shouted, “Who brought the hockey pucks???”... Not one of them came up and patted me on the head while tut-tutting.... But that’s because they are so VERY nice.
Thinking they could bake in the church oven while we attended church, I got them started and then cranked up the temperature when it seemed that the oven wasn’t getting hot enough....My wonderful smooshed potatoes became an unmitigated disaster, overcooked and rock-like... If you had offered the little nuggets “al carbon” for slingshot ammunition, you could say that they would make a strong impression! (Not the kind of impression I wanted to make!)
But there IS an upside to all of this: I was not tempted to over-indulge! One small test serving was all I needed ...
(So I have THAT going for me!)
