Thanks for sharing Canada

Tuesday, November 12, 2019

We are setting low temperature records these last two days thanks to a Canadian cold front. I love cold weather but the homeless are sometimes clueless on how to protect themselves in these cold snaps. Around here they break into a vacant structure and set a fire on the floor and usually get out in time to avoid a roast. The prediction for us is that it will be cold through the weekend. The thaw will be messy but useful.

This seems to be a systemic issue all over the country. In the Pacific Northwest, they are here in droves in the winter months as it is a climate that if one were homeless they might more likely be able to survive out-of-doors. Our warming shelters are packed at certain times and resources are minimal. Breaks my heart. Where I live there was a class action lawsuit a few years ago that let a lot of people out of the Oregon State Mental Hospital. Many chose to become their own advocates and therefore do not receive appropriate services or regular medication. The other day I saw a woman crossing a street downtown and she stopped in the middle of the crosswalk to urinate. Pee ran down and soaked her pants and became a puddle that she left in the road when she was done. No dry clothing, no shower.. it was terrible. I can't imagine such a life of torment and discomfort.

lol I live in Canada and we are in the high 40’s to low 50’s. You are sharing with the wrong part of Canada. Hopefully they have been able to provide warm clothing and bedding or shelter. Keep warm.

Had to laugh..it has been bitter cold ..and the futher south it goes the harder it is for folks to deal with it.
The homeless however ..ahh that breaks my heart, many here have pets or issues that make it impossible for them to sleep inside. These temps are a challenge for many!
    Stay warm..stay safe!!
