The Stand

Sunday, November 17, 2019

The Stand mini-series, from Stephen King’s novel of the same name, aired on ABC from 8-12 May 1994. I have to say, this one scared the pee out of me. I was working in the VA Emergency Department. It wasn’t the “Good vs Evil” that bothered me - it was the spread of the mote than 95% lethal virus. Hantavirus killed several healthy young people in 1993 in the Four Corners area of the southwest (NM is one of the states in the 4 Corners). Asian flu, Swine flu, Ebola, ... always something.

Anyway, in case you missed the book or show - on 13 June, a weaponized influenza is accidentally released in a rural California top-secret government laboratory. The laboratory is locked down, but not before one gate guard gets off the reservation & is hauling butt for his family in Texas. Unfortunately, Charlie had been exposed, & everything & everyone he touched (gas pump, waitress, etc) is exposed. They in turn infect others. In 2 weeks, 99.4 % of the world’s human population is dead. Of the scant survivors, some are infants or little children who cannot care for themselves, some have other problems, l8ke dementia. Oh, & some are psychopaths &/or stone-cold killers. The few survivors try to band together. They start having dreams, either from Mother Abagail (good) to go to Nebraska, or from Randall Flagg (evil) to go to Las Vegas. Well, with less than 1% of the population is all that’s left, they can go into any store, car dealership, or gas station - take what you want & go! People still being people, there are clashes within the groups (“I love her, you can’t have her, I’ll kill you first” yada yada, yada. Anyway, the 2 groups of survivors end up in Vegas (bad demonic peoples) & Bolder, Colorado (better peeps). There are enough fix-it people in both groups to get the electricity & water working, a smattering of health professionals, etc. There is then this humongous good vs evil standoff (The Stand!). Well done show. Stephen King has a bit part - he always does it in his movies.

(Don't Fear) The Reaper, Blue Öyster Cult, 1976 (used in the mini-series)

All our times have come
Here but now they're gone
Seasons don't fear the reaper
Nor do the wind, the sun or the rain, we can be like they are

Come on baby, don't fear the reaper
Baby take my hand, don't fear the reaper
We'll be able to fly, don't fear the reaper
Baby I'm your man

La, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la
Valentine is done
Here but now they're gone

Romeo and Juliet
Are together in eternity, Romeo and Juliet
40,000 men and women everyday, Like Romeo and Juliet
40,000 men and women everyday, Redefine happiness
Another 40,000 coming everyday, We can be like they are

Come on baby, don't fear the reaper
Baby take my hand, don't fear the reaper
We'll be able to fly, don't fear the reaper
Baby I'm your man

La, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la
Love of two is one
Here but now they're gone
Came the last night of sadness
And it was clear she couldn't go on

Then the door was open and the wind appeared
The candles blew then disappeared
The curtains flew then he appeared, saying don't be afraid

Come on baby, and she had no fear
And she ran to him, then they started to fly
They looked backward and said goodby, she had become like they are
She had taken his hand, she had become like they are
Come on baby, don't fear the reaper
