November 19, 2019 REFUSE TO BE BITTER

We have probably bit into something expecting it to taste really sweet only to discover that it is bitter. We are taken by surprise and immediately spit it out because it is not what we expected. Bitterness isn’t good. When we have bitterness in our hearts, it tears us up inside. It is senseless. Holding grudges and seeking ways to hurt others because we have been hurt only makes things worse. Rather than storing bitterness in our hearts, we need to store love. When we choose to get rid of the bitterness and replace it with love, God will help us to live a better life and not a bitter one.

Psalm 73:21-26 “Then I realized that my heart was bitter, and I was all torn up inside. I was so foolish and ignorant—I must have seemed like a senseless animal to you. Yet I still belong to you; you hold my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, leading me to a glorious destiny. Whom have I in heaven but you? I desire you more than anything on earth. My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever.” (NLT)

1. Write what you may be bitter about.
2. List the things bitterness can do to you.
3. Know God wants you to show forgiveness and love.
4. Seek God’s will and depend on Him for strength to refuse to be bitter.

Dear Lord, sometimes we can’t see our own bitter hearts until we are so far gone in our own self-pity that no one wants to be around us. Help us to recognize any bitterness in our lives and seek Your forgiveness. Help us to forgive others and be kind so we can show Your love to others. We want to stop being selfish and start being selfless putting the needs of others before our own. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

We are to help one another through prayer and encouraging words so we don’t grow bitter.

Hebrews 12:15 “Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many.” (NLT)

1 Corinthians 13:7 “Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.” (NLT)

Proverbs 14:10 “Each heart knows its own bitterness, and no one else can fully share its joy.” (NLT)

God wants us to get rid of all bitterness and replace it with love.

Ephesians 4:31 “Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.” (NLT)
