According to Thomas and Ruth Roy of Wellcat Holidays, creators of Humbug Day, the day allows everyone that is preparing for Christmas to vent their frustrations, by using the phrase "humbug." Only twelve humbugs are allowed today though. In A Christmas Carol, Ebenezer Scrooge is an old miser who shuns Christmas traditions and has a cold heart. Scrooge uses the phrase "Bah! Humbug!" after his nephew wishes him a "Merry Christmas," as a way to show that he thinks the holiday is a fraud. As Christmas is quickly approaching and things may be getting hectic, this day allows us the opportunity to let off some steam, just as Scrooge used it to show his disdain for Christmas.
Celebrate the day by saying "humbug" or "Bah! Humbug!" whenever something goes wrong. It may make you feel better as Christmas approaches, as you may be rushing to get gifts purchased and wrapped, or your home ready for guests. Make sure you don't say "humbug" more than twelve times though. You could also spend time reading A Christmas Carol, to learn more about the man that helped bring us this day, and how he turned from a negative humbugger, to a man of generosity who embraced the Christmas spirit, after being visited by a few spirits of another kind.
Today is the first day of winter. ~
