Some Observations

Saturday, December 28, 2019

Driving back across half (or so) of Texas today I noticed a giant billboard for a ranch near Interstate 10 which announced “Hog Hunts!” “Trophy Taxidermy!” “Game Processing!” “Dog Food!”

Seriously, Dog Food??? I guess after you bag your wild hog, have part of it taxidermied into an ornament for your den, and have the edible part turned into sausage and roasts, then you can have everything leftover turned into dog food???? That is some fantastic recycling!!!

Traffic was moving quite fast today under a leaden sky that threatened rain that didn’t materialize except for a few sprinkles over the 3 hours that I was on the road.... almost ALL the traffic was going faster than I was, but it gave me a chance to examine them more appreciatively as they passed, and I DID see one thing I had never seen before...

There ere plenty of pick-up trucks on the road, and SOME of them looked as if they belonged to folks who were moving from one part of the country, but ONE pick-up that passed me had a load of cages in the back full of birds, and it took me a while before I figured out what kind of birds they were.... too small for chickens.... wrong shape for pigeons... not ducks... definitely not geese.... They were quail! Live quail en route to somewhere west of east Texas...

I know that Texas’ natural population of quail has taken a hit from non-native species like fire ants, but I also know that there are efforts underway to re-introduce them into the eco-system... I’m guessing that’s what I glimpsed today.... you have to wonder if it will work...

What a great and pleasant drive today.... and now I’m Home Sweet Home!
