01/21/20 Strength

Tuesday, January 21, 2020

"Strength doesn't come from what you can do. It comes from overcoming the things you once thought you couldn't."

"Tell me when it's over, Doc."

A man is filling up his car tank with gasoline and accidentally gets some on his hand. He doesn't notice it, so when he gets into his car he lights a cigarette. His arm instantly catches on fire. The man sticks his arm out the window and begins to wave it around attempting to blow out the flames crawling up his sleeve. A policeman sees the man struggling with his arm on fire and arrests him on the spot for an unlicensed firearm.

It's Rid the World of Fad Diet and Gimmicks Day! Today is a day for education and caution: diet quackery runs the gamut from plans and supplements that contain dangerous drugs to the merely ridiculous. From checkiday: " Red flags should go up that a diet is a fad diet if it promises that a large amount of weight can be lost quickly, if fewer than 1,000 calories are to be eaten in a day, if special foods are needed to be purchased, if no risks are provided, and if large advance payments or long-term contracts are required. Instead of fad diets and other gimmicks, a balanced diet and exercise is the best way to lose weight. This approach also won't negatively affect health." If it's too good to be true, it's probably a scam, so be careful. Today is observed on the 3rd Tuesday of January during Healthy Weight Week.
--International Playdate Day: today is a reminder of the importance of play and social skills for our kids; our lives are so much more hectic that we have to plan ahead when our kids can play with their friends but it is very important to make the effort.
--International Sweatpants Day: oh, I can get behind this one; sweatpants were introduced in 1920 by French fashionista Emile Camuset, founder of Le Coq Sportif; the original sweatpants were knitted gray jersey pants to help athletes exercise easier.
--National Granola Bar Day: a salute to a tasty snack; granola bars(consist of oats, dried fruit, nuts and seeds; touted as being healthy but sweeteners and chocolate are included which adds to the calories; they are also loaded with binders such as brown rice syrup, honey and maple syrup; choose carefully if you make them part of your daily food intake.
--National Hugging Day: also known as National Hug Day; we need more hugging days; hugging is so good for you; it releases oxytocin, the hormone associated with happiness, and reduces cortisol which is associated with stress; be sure to give an extra hug to your loved ones.
--National New England Clam Chowder Day: a salute to a wonderful comfort food; chowder was first introduced by fishing villages along the coast in France during the 16th century; made with milk or cream and no tomatoes; in 1939, Maine passed a law that made it illegal to add tomatoes to clam chowder.
--One-Liners Day: with the award season in full-swing, this is the time to honor those one-liners from movies that live long after the movie such as "Fasten your seatbelts. It's going to be a bumpy ride" from 'All About Eve'; what's your favorite line and associated movie?
--Own Your Own Home Day: today was started in 1920 as a way to encourage people to save and be thrifty so to be able to afford a home; after the mortgage failure crisis of 2008, home ownership has dropped and feelings are more mixed as to the desire of home ownership.
--Squirrel Appreciation Day: a love/hate relationship as they're cute but they rob the bird feeder and dig up the flower bulbs; for this day, we'll give them a pass and maybe put some peanuts out for them.
