Keto Day 4

Thursday, March 05, 2020

I didn't have the time to track my food in the nutrition tracker the past 2 days. Today I went back & logged yesterday's food, and had a rude awakening. 1 cup broccoli is 11 carbs, 1 C carrots is 13 and 1/2 an avocado is 7! Ouch! In what I thought was a healthy Keto-based meal day I had over 44 carbs (the goal is to be under 20) and only ended up with about 1270 calories (too low!). Guess a lot more carb education is needed.

My main struggle is that I've always been a veggie girl, love all kinds of salads and non-starchy vegetables, even grow a lot myself. Typically I would fill my plate with as many veggies as I wanted... really only focused on counting the meat & starch portion of the meal. But in this new way of eating I guess I have to be more sensible about what and how much of the vegetable world goes on my plate. Today I was much more careful in that regard.

Day 4 had me in a bit of a slump around 11am; feeling very tired and a little shaky. Had half an avocado (that was before I realized the 7 carb grams!) and that didn't seem to help. Then drank a glass of Powerade-Zero and started to feel a lot better. Yay electrolytes!

Had the 2nd shingles shot with no problems, even went for a walk in the woods with DH afterwards. Time to do some major trail maintenance, hopefully in the next couple of weeks.

My meals today:

- breakfast: cheese omelette and 2 slices bacon

- lunch: small salad with warm chicken & creamy caesar dressing (yummy) plus 2 spoonfuls of kimchi afterwards (crazy, but it seems to be a good signal for me that the meal's over)

- dinner: lamb chop, smaller portion of leftover broccoli & carrots with butter

- snacks: 1/2 avocado, maybe later some pork rinds if I have the munchies

Haven't done my tracking yet. I'm probably over again, but each day I'm learning a little more about this new way of eating.

Interesting, I haven't really focused on net carbs, since the diet I've been following only uses total carbs. But that makes me feel better... I still want to do a lot of reading and experimenting to figure out what's best for my particular body. Thanks for the info!

You didn't subtract the Fiber from the Carbs to get Net Carbs. 1/2 avocado is 7.5 carbs and fiber of 5.9 which gives you a total of 1.6 for the half avocado. Read about Net Carbs (Total Carb minus Fiber).

Very interesting! I didn't know the diet required so little percentage of carbs. I'm a carby girl which I know is not good. Been lowering them little by little. Well, it's a learning process. emoticon emoticon

Excellent job recognizing the carb counts!! I’m the daughter of a produce man. I lived on fruit and veg, and fruit was the hardest thing for me to give up. It was really difficult realizing that what I always thought was healthy was pure sugar. And, like you, veg was a huge part of my meals. I have half a cup of broccoli, mushrooms, or zucchini, OR a small lettuce only salad once a day, if any at all. I won’t lie..I miss unlimited veg. I miss carrots but they just don’t fit. So I find what does. I had to change my mind from “food is delicious/social/emotional/fun” to “food is fuel. Period” and for someone that makes a living as a chef—and a bakery owner/-that was tough.
