Make self-talk positive. Treat yourself as you would a good friend — with encouragement and understanding, not harsh criticism.

The word "should" tends to describe regret, criticism, and pressure. Instead of telling yourself I "should" exercise, say I like how I feel when I exercise. Or switch I "should" cook at home to I want healthy meals that save me money.

Dream big, then set specific, short-term goals you can work on daily, keep your goals manageable. Pause to appreciate progress. Also be prepared with a plan for falling short. If you miss the mark, think about ways to get back on track.
