Day 1 - Into the Wilderness

Monday, July 06, 2020

Living in the Atlantic Northeast certainly has it's perks; one of which are the challenging trails adjacent to gorgeous waterfalls. On a mid-90's degree day, the breeze of the cool(er) water and the spray from the falls as one stands close is the best refresh for the sweat-drenched hiker. Today I enjoyed such an experience with a dramatic 200ft change in elevation. I kicked off my shoes and waded into the clear pools of water, bringing back fond memories from childhood and young adulthood, when my best friend and I would traipse through the woods to find the best swimming hole. The smell of the mossy earth, mixed with heady pine and sweet grass, was such a treat for my soul. As I begin this new summer season, in a year that has brought so much uncertainty, and so many challenges, I am reminded to take care of my soul. Earlier this morning, I listened to the BossBabe Podcast, Episode 101, and it hit on a very interesting point: Every cell in our being has a code for remembrance. When we are in stagnation, all that memory gets stagnant which makes a new exercise routine seem like SUCH a chore. When you spark that fire with exercise, your cells remember that feeling and this is the drive that people get motivated by after making exercise a consistent practice. I acknowledge that my cells have been more familiar lately with survival and inactivity, which is why I truly struggle with maintaining consistency. Today, as my BPM hit 173 (according to my Galaxy Active watch), and I felt the stretch of every sinew and burn of every muscle in my legs, I felt energized and refreshed. I walked back to the parking lot, feeling accomplished and wondering, as I always do, why I don't do this more often.
