I Never Planned to Be Here!

Sunday, August 02, 2020

When the forecast came for Hurricane Hanna it was supposed to be north of us with wind gusts of up to 45 MPH. Now we have a plan in place so we are not here if a hurricane hits. We know where we are going to wait the storm out. We also had a plan on what to do if our property had major damage. We have our "hurricane trunk" packed so we can load the car and get out of town in 15 minutes. I thought I had it all covered. Well, the best-laid plans ...

Let me begin by saying that I am about one and a half hours from the coast. Normally a hurricane loses steam is a tropical depression by the time it gets to where I am located. Hanna had her own ideas though. She remained a hurricane until she had already passed us by.

She also decided to head south rather than west like they had expected. The eye went right over the top of us. The wind was fierce and we got 12+ inches of rain in a 24 hour period. Several families were flooded out and had to be rescued. Others had no electricity for days.

We were blessed though. My electricity just flickered a couple of times, meaning that I still had air conditioning. My covered awning in my quiet place in the back was destroyed. I wasn't able to get the frame down enough to reach the cover to take it off. Other than that, the only damage to my place was that I lost a couple of shingles.

There were trees blown down around me, but the worst damage was to metal carports that couldn't hand the weight and or wind. The biggest blessing was that no one in our park was killed or hurt badly. We were land-locked for a while because all of the streets surrounding us were flooded.

A week has passed and although there is still a lot of evidence of the storm, most of the damage has been assessed and those who are gone for the summer have made arrangements for repairs if needed. Those of us who are still here have hauled most of the broken branches to the street to wait to be hauled away.

Funny thing though ... Normally I don't sleep well during a thunderstorm. Too many years living in tornado alley I guess. Last night we had thunderstorms and I went right to sleep and slept soundly. Although it was never on my bucket list, I can now say that I stayed and experience a hurricane. Thankfully it was only a category 1 so the damage wasn't worse.

In the meantime, my trunk sits packed and ready to be loaded. There is a definite possiblily that if another one of these storms is supposed to just pass by close that I might just have to pack my car and leave.

I too can now cross servived a hurricane here in the south of Texas. Being from Minnesota, tornadoes were out biggest summer nasty storm. But, the hurricane with so much more rain, that was something. We were lucky, just some skirting off our trailer, and that that fell, was on our property, and some under the trailer.

Glad your park and your household is safe. Here in South Texas we got the outer bands of Hurricane Hanna in my town and surrounding towns we lost electricity, internet and lots of flooding. My street didn't flood as before but our power was off and on and I just got my internet back two days ago.

Last night during the Thunderstorm I got my flash lights ready even though it all stopped as I got ready for bed. Then boom / boom / BOOM, the light show and harsh wind and rain woke me up. Looks like there is another storm south of me towards the Island with possible hale.

    Be safe
