Day 295: Wildfire smoke
Saturday, September 12, 2020
Yesterday was Day 295 of my 10+ fitness minutes streak -- looking forward to hitting Day 300 next week.
Yesterday was a very light fitness day on a busy work day. I did 10 minutes on the exercise bike to hit the 10 min goal and then a few minutes of my hand grip during a video call. But, the streak plus these light days keep me feeling like I'm on a mission to reach big goals.
Now today that motivation already has me on a good start to today.
Outside fitness has been challenging out here in California due to the smoke from all the wildfires. It's so bad that it really is fairly dangerous to even go outside. My dog isn't happy when he doesn't get his daily walk/hike like yesterday, but I think he understand the bad air.
A few weeks ago, one of the big fires was on the other side of our community with many homes burned down. We got really lucky -- overall, some people obviously not lucky -- when expected high winds did not hit. This was fortunate because the fire was threatening major population centers and there weren't enough firefighters to help. A bittersweet victory.
I tell people that something hard to imagine about wildfires is that if winds are strong, a wildfire can travel one football field per second -- it's terrifying. Best wishes to anyone out there dealing with fires or smoke. The orange skies this week were eerie and apocalyptic.
There have been so many challenges during 2020 that it really is important to keep control of our health with things that seem simple like doing small amounts of consistent fitness and eating right. Taking control of what you can control in a positive way is so important to our mental health when there are so many things going on that we can't control.
I hope you have a great weekend -- SparkCheers!
