Adding more exercise ...

Monday, September 14, 2020

Today the Fall 5% Challenge Community upped the ante! I confess, I have enjoyed simply walking, tracking food and being successful in my weight loss journey. Am I doing the best possible? Nooooooo . . .

I had previously read a SparkPeople article about the "Only 12 Exercises You Need..." I promptly made a spreadsheet for tracking, put it in my binder, and then . . . nothing! Here is the link:

It is great! Why am I not doing this? Good question. I don't need special equipment. I don't need a gym membership. I don't need a personal training yelling at me. Well, maybe I do!

Next best option is declaring my intention, here and now! Here is my spreadsheet:

It is not enough to just weigh less; strength and flexibility are just as important. Last fall, as a teacher-teaching-on-call, I was in the gym at a school and shooting hoops with a student. I couldn't even hit the rim from the free-throw line! I used to be a basketball high scorer as I could shoot from far out and swish. I was mortified! I also noticed how slow my reaction time was playing volleyball, and I used to play at the varsity level. Yes, we slow down with age, but we can improve this situation with a little exercise; I know it!

I will be my own cheerleader and start today! Stay tuned for updates!

I loved strength training, in terms of weights. I cannot do it at this time, except upper body, due to the back injury. I used to play competitive volleyball, loved the game. Sounds like you have a good plan, all the best with it!!

ps: I couldn't do burpees, plank or push-ups even when I was in the best shape ever. But as I told people, I could throw down a calf and hold him while my dad doctored him up and I could toss a full-grown man onto a stretcher, strapping in him with one hand behind my back - so hey, might not be able to plank, but don't mess with me in a dark ally. hahaha!

(I was a nurse, just realized how that sounded with the man/stretcher comment LOL)

My hats off to anyone who can do these, so good on you!! emoticon

I just did ten of the twelve. I’m certainly not twenty anymore! These were actually quite difficult for me. I don’t have a medicine ball, but I’m sure I’ll find something else with a little weight to swing in it’s place.

Now I have a starting point to compare back to when looking for improvement, thus the spreadsheet.

You've got this! I started strength training last month...I hate it *less* after a few weeks. I like going along to YouTube videos though, since I can't motivate myself as well!
