Train Wreck

I am not referring to an actual event but rather to the overall state of our health and fitness. An article I read last week in Popular Science stated that fully 1/2 of Americans (count most of the western world in that statistic as well) suffer from heart disease and the main symptom is hypertension. For a long time the safe upper limit for blood pressure was 140/90. That value has now been lowered to 130/80 and thus many more of us are now hypertensive.

There are certainly medications that can be prescribed to lower BP but many if not all also offer unwanted or even dangerous side affects. The safest and least expensive solutions are to make positive dietary changes and to increase exercise levels (both with the blessing of one's doctor of course). Thanks to Spark we have amazing choices of information to use but unless we commit to making changes our health will not improve. Are you up to the challenge?

Take stock of what you eat, get rid of the processed junk in your pantry, lace on a pair of sneakers and go for a daily walk aiming for a MINIMUM of 150 minutes of activity each and every week. Stay committed, monitor your progress, share your experience with others, feel good about yourself and wow yourself the next time your blood pressure is checked. emoticon emoticon emoticon

    not been checked since the lockdown in March. Before that I used the drug store machines. While we are away, it’s always good. I hope to be seen , in person, soon.

    26% of kids were overweight , that was back in 2010...No clue what the number is now, but good health begins early on... I see some change, more activity in our neighborhood, but you see far more obesity where families are just scraping by. My BP has

    Yes, good advice, I check mine monthly and it's ok. Food manufacturers spend millions working out how to tempt us to eat richer food. Why would they care that it makes us unhealthy, reduces our life span?! I wonder if they eat their own food?

    People eat out more and subsequently gain weight. I have a hard time finding healthy, low fat/low sugar entrees. It seems everything has extra butter or sugar. Of course! Because restaurants are in the business of preparing delicious food!

    You can thank the Big Food companies for the statistics being what they are. They purposely make "food" to be hyper-palatable and addictive.

    Make your own food, don't buy it already made.

    Smart words. I’m particularly horrified when I see the number of younger (and middle aged) people who are extremely obese. It seems to have become a norm.

    Not a hopeful statistic is it?
    Along with the 2/3 of us who are overweight, obese or worse, what ARE we doing to ourselves.

    We now have a BP monitor on our kitchen table to remind DH to check it every day. Since his emergency brain surgery in 2016, we don't want any surprises.
