January 18, 2021 PUT OTHERS FIRST
It’s always a good feeling when we are in line at a drive-thru and arrive at the window to pay only to find out the person in front of us paid for our food. It reminds us there are still some kind and good people in the world. It reminds us that we, ourselves, should be more aware of giving and helping others even in the small things. When we put others first, we remind them that there are still good people in this world and that we care.
There are many Scriptures that tell us to put others first. Not just in the small things but in all things. Not just people we like but people who are hard to like. Not just people we know but people we don’t know. When we stop thinking about ourselves and seek out to help others with their needs, we will be blessed and they will also be blessed. Putting others first is more about giving money or material things. It is about being kind. It is about being patient. It is about showing mercy and compassion.
Luke 6:35-36 “Love your enemies! Do good to them. Lend to them without expecting to be repaid. Then your reward from heaven will be very great, and you will truly be acting as children of the Most High, for he is kind to those who are unthankful and wicked. You must be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate.” (NLT)
1. Write how you put others first.
2. List any areas where you could improve.
3. Know God wants you to show mercy as He shows mercy to you.
4. Seek out the needs of others and do good to them.
Dear Lord, we know it is easy to do good to those we are close to and who are good people. It is much harder to do good to those who don’t like us. Help us to find ways to show mercy and compassion to all people. Help us to seek out ways to show them Your love in our words and in our actions. We thank You for Your mercy and compassion to us and we pray You will work through us to show mercy and compassion to others. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
James 2:13 “There will be no mercy for those who have not shown mercy to others. But if you have been merciful, God will be merciful when he judges you.” (NLT)
Matthew 7:12 “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.” (NLT)
Romans 12:14” Bless those who persecute you. Don’t curse them; pray that God will bless them.” (NLT)
Deuteronomy 15:10 “Give generously to the poor, not grudgingly, for the Lord your God will bless you in everything you do.” (NLT)
1 John 3:17 “If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion—how can God’s love be in that person?” (NLT)
Matthew 5:7 “God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy.” (NLT)
