Being healthy on vacation

Friday, October 12, 2007

I'm leaving for Orlando this evening, so that got me thinking about something: how common is it for people to stick to their exercise and diet plans while they're out of town? For the past few years, I've made sure I check to see if the hotel where I'm staying has a fitness center (and they usually do) and I bring workout clothes with me. If I'm staying at someone's house, I still take workout clothes and maybe my jump rope. About 70% of the time, I DO work out at least a couple of days and it feels good. The eating, on the other hand, doesn't usually go so well. My favorite part of traveling is the different foods and without SP's food tracker handy, I just say why bother?! And it's SO hard to get in my fruits and vegetables. I know some people, like my sister, feel like it's vacation so I'm definitely NOT going to work out. I've never felt that way even when I'm not in strict workout mode. I still see exercising as something that's beneficial for me and makes me feel good afterwards. So taking one hour out of my vacation time to get it in is not that big of a deal. We'll see how it goes this weekend. ;-)

It is wonderful that you gave this some thought before leaving on vacation. That has been a big revelation for me. I always think about working out while I am on vacation and I try to be good about eating. Usually we go to visit my dad or brother so I always ask them to get oatmeal or my Uncle Sam cereal for breakfast and some fruit so at least I can start the day right. Then I try to stay minful of what I eat, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. I figure at least we have accomplished half the battle. I hope you have gotten some rest since your return!

The couple weekends I've gotten away since starting SP I have worked out. It makes me feel even better that I've made time for it when out of my routine. It's fun to be creative and use different equipment, etc. The food is tough for me too. Some of the hotel's we've stayed at have a computer in their lobby and I still tracked my food. My best advice is to eat what you want, but write it down. Seeing a long list even without know the nutrition info. always makes me re-evaluate what is fun eating and what is just eating to eat. I agree the most important this is to relax, have fun and enjoy yourself. Mental health is just as important. I hope you have a wonderful time!

I always have great intentions... I take work-out clothes, my iPod, tennis shoes... then I end up not doing all that much. Though, I haven't gone on a real vacation since I started this weight loss journey in earnest. I agree with Helen - you do what makes you feel good. It's a vacation, after all!!

When we go on our once a year trip to a Caribbean Island, I am very naughty. I eat, drink, and be merry! The closest I come to exercise is the morning walk I talk on the beach. I think it's because I do try to work out fairly hard the whole rest of the year and I personally think it's okay to take a break now and then. Sometimes you actually feel invigorated after a short break. However, if it's a few days, I try very hard to incorporate my workouts -- or do extra workouts prior knowing that I will be 2 days without exercise. Hey, whatever works and makes you feel good about yourself is what you should do!
