NIRERIN has some good points. I think the one I like the most is the suggestion to focus on a smaller goal, like 10 pounds. Another one I like is to make small modifications to what you are already doing.

I am in a similar boat. I lost 80 pounds about 12 years ago and regain about 40-45 (depending on the day lol) of that. I regained a good chunk during the time I was married. My ex made fun of me for my healthy habits like measuring food.

I am back at the healthy changes. I am taking some nutrition classes and while I don't agree with 100% of what they are teaching, like the only protein you should eat is animal protein, I am learning some good things. One small change I made the first week is to ditch the lab created sugar, which was sucralose for me, and so far I have been losing consistently.

Keep the 50 lbs on the back burner and focus on the first ten pounds and some other measurement of your fitness that applies to everyday life (how many flights of stairs you can go up and down without being winded, how long you can play with the kids, if you can run/jog/walk a mile, how fast you can go a mile, if you can complete a 5k, if you can swim 300 meters, etc).

The thing about 50 lbs is that, if it is all that you have to lose, you're going to get into the last thirty or so pretty quickly. In the last thirty or so muscle mass becomes a big factor (in that the more muscle mass you retain while losing, the higher the calorie range that you will maintain at and also the higher the weight you will maintain at while being fit and physically smaller in shape, and this is also where you are losing 1/4 to 1/2 lb per week, so it's the really slow and steady zone).

One other thing to note is how long it took you to get to plus fifty pounds. Fifty pounds over 5 years is 10 pounds a year, which is only 96 calories more a day on average over what you would have needed to eat to maintain. If you gained that 50 lbs over 10 years, you are looking at 48 calories a day on average more than you needed to maintain. What those longer gains mean is that your base diet (simply means what you eat) isn't that far off from what it should be and hasn't been that off to start. Which means you don't need to go throw out everything that you were doing before, just make some small modifications like baby steps. Focus on one or two things at a time (one more serving of fruit, trying to make your portions 50 calories under what they were before, going for an after dinner walk around the block) and these have the benefit of being things that tend to stick around a little more easily than trying to reinvent everything that you do.

-google first. ask questions later.

TCOUGAR You will be able to lose your weight. Just relax and do what you learn from spark/sparkers. I have been here since 2008 and it's the best thing going. I lost a LOT of weight and gt to goal but then got Sepsis and was very ill (on the brink of death) for over a year and full recovery was a bit after that. In the hospital they gave me too much ice cream and cookies and I could not walk. BUT I came right back to spark when I was well enough and am losing the weight again!

It's always good to start out with just a couple small goals to get back into some good habits. Reach those goals and then set a couple more small ones. It's a process and you can do it!

Hoping that the third time will be a charm. I'm here to try and lose the same 50 pounds that I have tried to lose the last couple of times. New goals and hopefully new life to work towards. Thank you SparksPeople for still being here for me to come back to.
