I am with JERF on this one. If it's just the one thing and it needs to be sweet, have it sweet. If it's one of many, then work on reducing the amount, and as you reduce the amount of everything else a lower amount of sugar will follow along. Also, have a sweet tea option in your fridge and an unsweetened option, they're too fast and easy and cheap not to.
Added sugar is one of those foods where the less you eat the better off you’ll be so I would take a look at the overall added sugar intake.
If you’re adding a small amount (1/2-1 tsp) to tea once or twice a day and have no other sources of added sugar in your diet then you’re probably fine (unless you’re a diabetic).
If you’re adding more that a tsp to the tea many times a day and also eating a lot of added sugars in your diet than a real effort should be made to cut back. The upper limit for added sugar is 9 tsp or 35g is the upper limit for men and 6 tsp 25g for women.
As for stevia. I have tried it and don’t really enjoy the taste. Over the years I have trained my taste buds to enjoy a very low level of sweet. I can taste the tiniest amount of sugar in foods. I did this by gradually cutting back the amount I use, and I don’t miss it at all!

While it may be worth trying, keep in mind that stevia is part of the same plant family as ragweed and so may cause allergic reactions from folks who suffer from hayfever / ragweed allergies.

I can't find any reliable sources that have anything bad to say about the safety of any of them, including sugar when guidelines are followed. Small amounts of any of them appear to be perfectly safe... so, I've just chosen to stick with what I like and I do like mine pretty sweet, so I also usually include cost in my considerations, and some are a lot cheaper to use than others. Too much sugar or too much anything is usually bad, but sensible amounts appear perfectly safe. I will expand on the sugar alcohols a little to point out that it usually stops at the step before diarrhea which is increased gas, so 'you' may not want him to have it.
