Heya, E2L folks!

I'm the leader of the Vegan, Plant-Based Life Team and thought it might be nice to be on this team as well.

I know that E2L is *not* vegan, but my plant-based story actually began with Dr. Fuhrman and doing his 6 week vegan cleanse. I'm not strict E2L but I will be forever grateful to Dr. Furhman and, when I feel lost and off-track, GBOMBS brings me back.

Looking forward to saying hello to those I know and to meeting new folks over here. Cheers!

Hello! I'm looking forward to learning how best to follow Eat to Live and hope to become healthier doing it. Not new to Spark but haven't been very active recently and need to change that.

Good luck Sunny!

I will create an ongoing 'six week challenge thread' on this forum so you can post your findings there, there used to be one that worked well in the past.

Feel free to post questions and share your experiences on the Chit Chat thread also. As I don't get notified of new posts I won't know it if you reply to a thread but I check the Chit Chat thread daily. Don 't be shy, just jump in if you like!

Sorry about duplication, I'm trying to find where to post this.
Hi Everyone
Happy Easter to those in Western countries.
I intend to start ETL after Orthodox Easter, the week after yours this year, since I live in Greece. Meanwhile I am reading The End of Dieting and waiting for the new edition of Eat to Live as well as both cookery books to arrive from Amazon.
Last year I lost more than 10kg with the Dukan Diet. For a couple of months at the beginning of this year I tried the Auto-Immune Protocol diet to help with an auto-immune condition I have, but half the weight piled back on so I quit. This time round the Dukan diet doesn't seem to be working for me and to be honest I am heartily sick of so much meat. So I am ready for a sea change with ETL.
Of course I want to lose weight, but also to build my health. I had tried ETL many years ago with the first edition, a yellow book if memory serves. But I recall feeling hungry and finding it all too extremely restrictive. That is why I was so happy to find this group, I look forward to your help and support.
I'm spending this coming week trying to shake a cold, reading, printing recipes off the internet etc, as well as shopping for staples such as nuts, chia seeds. I'm excited and can't wait to start! Good luck to everyone here.

Pan metron ariston.

Hi Tia, sorry for my late response, WELCOME to the team! I think if you're a vegetarian you will have it a bit more easy getting used to the ETL program.
Like you sugar is addictive to me... I cut it out about two weeks ago, relapsed once but I intend to keep working on a sugar free life!

My name is Becky. Just joined the team, but I have been on Spark for a while. I have been looking at info on eating whole food plant based for several months, and have incorporated a lot more plants into my food plan. Thursday someone told me about Eat to Live, so I downloaded it to my Kindle. I finished it today. I think I am going to jump in to the six week program starting Monday, so I have tomorrow to prep. May be Tuesday if it takes longer than I am thinking.

Hello all, my name is Tia and I'm joining this group for accountability. I have been a vegetarian for about 2 years, before that I ate fish, chicken and eggs, but did not eat beef or pork for about 7 years. I ate the nutritarian way for about 6 month in late 2017 - 2018. My problem is that I'm a sugar addict. I have to kick this habit ASAP! Well, that's all really. I look forward to reading posts from everyone. :)

My name is Mary. I have been a vegetarian since 1978. However, I gotten more lactose intolerant (plus icecream was one of the items that was a stumbling block for me, and cheese). So, this year I've decided to start living a plant-based lifestyle

I'm glad this board is here.

I also like the vegan version of EL.. Recently I am just trying to keep it nutritarian as I love to cook..well I do in sort of cycles. I get into cooking phases and when I do I pull out Miyoko Schinner's books and make the cheeses and sausages which although healthy are not exactly on path to losing ..or they can be if I portion control I guess

Vegan cooking is kind of my downfall I guess... unless some how I can use it for good- I woke up to hear how the climate is going to change in 12 years and I am worried and wish people would stop or at lest lessen their meat consumption- the keto and paleo diets infuriate me-uI used to think live and let live and now I see how it is only going to help in the destruction of where we live. Then it really won't matter how healthy or thin we are.

I keep trying to get yoga in my routine. I can't really afford classes but I do have some wonderful DVD's. I admire you for doing yoga

-Hope to see you on the chat thread- it has been quiet

Hi, all! My name's Jennie and I'm returning to SparkPeople after many years away 'doing other things' (WW, MFP, over-exercising, over-restricting, and eventually winding up with a binge eating disorder which prompted me to finally seek help for my obsession with body/food/activity).
I've been vegetarian since 2000, vegan on and off since then, back on in May of 2016. I discovered yoga and ETL/Dr. Fuhrman around the same time, also in 2016. I absolutely love how veganism for ethical/environmental reasons, eating the ETL way to promote my own health and wellbeing, and the tenets and of yoga all work together synergistically.
I have been a long-distance runner, spinning instructor, and bootcamp coach, and I still use my Kaiser spin bike regularly.
I'm looking to this group to provide some support as I work towards following Dr. Fuhrman's recommendations 90-100% of the time. As a food addict, I understand I may need to 'abstain' completely from the processed stuff in order to heal, but this is a tough thing for me to consider.
Anyway, I wrote a lot, LOL. I hope to start a blog on my page for musings like this. Have a great day, everyone!

Hello! New to the team :) I've been shifting this year from vegetarian (8 years) to vegan (a few months), and have become a bit.... focused on... (read: "obsessed with") getting my nutrients through food. It all started when I was trying to figure out why my hair was so flat and thin, and nails brittle. At the same time I started eating more veggie protein, and my hair and nails both improved DRAMATICALLY!... If protein can so easily fix those problems, I wondered what other nutrients should I be paying more attention to! Reading up on multivitamin effectiveness and bioavailibility, I decided to try to do this through food. (Happily Amazon had already bought Whole Foods, so I wasn't also committing to going completely broke...) Turns out Sparkpeople helps a lot with its nutritional report. So I thought there must be others on this site who are doing the same thing! Little did I realize there's a whole community, and book, and movement! How AWESOME! emoticon

If being human is not simply a matter of being born flesh and blood, if it is instead a way of thinking, acting and... feeling, then I am hopeful that one day I will discover my own humanity. Until then... I will continue learning, changing, growing, and trying to become more than what I am. ~ Lt. Commander Data, Star Trek Next Generation

Having had some experience on other Spark teams, I find that I am very impressed with the interest Emily brings to the table. But first I need to get myself ready for this new adventure if I am to participate.
I shall not consider myself active for at least another week. I am an 85 y/o ggm, independently, so far, living in a senior community with progressive care available. A few years ago I dropped out of Spark when I found my teams being together for what seemed to me to be only for the social aspect. Also, I had a bad case of IBS-d which caused many restrictions. I feel I want to find out if this is doable in the next week or so as I complete adjusting my diet. There may still be some times when I eat a very small portion of animal protein after I start since some of the social activities involve a meal. And those social times are just as important to me as eating well.

Hi All, I've just joined this team, but have been Sparking since 2010. I just started reading Joel Fuhrman's book The End of Diabetes. I'm beginning to put his ideas into practice as I read. I've added a lot of nutrients to my tracker to see how I'm doing and experimenting with the supplements I had been taking to see which I actually should take, and which I should drop. This will be a gradual transition for me as I am the only one in my family that will be doing this. I am a married 51 yo with three College/Adult children - S24 - living at home and working full time; D21 (next month) entering her Jr. Year and moving to an apartment near campus at the end of August; S19 Entering his Sophomore Year in Colorado (I'm in New England). DH has health issues that seeds and nuts exacerbate, so he will not be following this with me. I look forward to seeing the impact on my glucose readings!

I admit, I haven't been eating my 1 oz. of seeds or nuts daily.

Tonight I am planning a cooked concoction of 1 cup Bulgar, .5 cup cauliflower .5 cup eggplant, .5 cup broccoli, .75 cups chickpeas, 1 oz of walnuts and lemon juice. IF I can eat that much I will still be 268 calories short for the day according to Spark.

Hi, Catherine,

Sounds like you are on track. emoticon

I have the same thought about enough calories. If I remember correctly, Fuhrman says we don't have to worry about counting calories. Because I have the same problem. If I'm not hungry but have eaten very nutritionally, do I need to worry about calories in or just go with how my body feels?

Any comments from experienced Nutritarians would be appreciated. emoticon

Keep it up, Catherine! It's nice to hear other Sparkers thoughts.

Hi, Trailblazer!
Sorry I missed your post yesterday.

I am on day 3 and having trouble getting in enough calories. I have the same problem with non-nutritarian eating as well. I can get a lot of healthy foods in, enough so I am full, but not have enough calories. I think I might get close today, that is if I cook tonight. I really need to get some meal prep done on the weekends.

Getting my 4 or more fruits in at breakfast. Then I'm having -for me- a huge salad at lunch: 3+ cups of leaf lettuce, with a cup of beans (Black and Cannallini) and some fresh green beans. Balsamic vinegar for a dressing. Then I am only sort of hungry at night. Last night I made plain Bulgar. The night before I had poppadoms.

I am missing salt, but the good thing is my ankle bones are more pronounced. Almost like they were in High School. It's weird, but I've missed those ankle bones. I've been holding more water weight than I realized.

Hi, Catherine!. I just finished Week 1 and had good results. Posted them on the team feed. Getting started was the struggle during Week 1 - deciding my meal plans, buying food, prepping and making sure I got in the necessary amounts. My mistakes were too much fruit one day and too many seeds and nuts another. I'm slowly getting myself organized. I even tried tofu for the first time. Put it in a vegetarian chili and didn't tell my husband. He didn't even notice! I've tried some of the recipes in Fuhrman's book. Some I liked and some I will abandon. It's all a matter of taste, I guess. I'm starting to look on websites to find meals that will fit into this plan. I would be interested in any that you and others on the team discover

Stay with it and keep us informed.

Hi,
I'm Catherine. Long time Sparker, but very new to Eat to Live. Like TrailBlazer just ahead of me in posting, I'm hoping this is an active team, I too need the support. I read Eat to Live over the weekend. I'm starting The End of Diabetes. My doctor keeps telling me I am not diabetic, but I see the numbers. Also after reading the first book, I feel that I better eat as though I already am rather than waiting until I am.

My name is Sue. I'm hoping this team is still very active as I could use the support. I read The End of Diabetes and decided to try the Nutritarian plan. I am prediabetic and would like to get off the med I take and the blood pressure med. I have been on the plan for 3 days. Haven't weighed myself. But my eyesight is what I noticed on Day 2 - much clearer. My blood sugars dropped amazingly by Day 2.

I hope you are an active team. I may have a lot of questions or cries for help.

Thanks!

New here, hi. I have been having hypoglycemic episodes the past week, and the doctor's going to send me to a dietitian. But I know the healthiest way to eat, and it's more plants, no oil/sugar, so I figure why not just treat myself better and eat myself well.

Just started reading ETL and planning to try the nutritarian way of eating. I’ve been a lacto-ovo vegetarian for 6 years, tried veganism (but was overwhelmed by the non food related rules). Tried Whole Foods Plant Based and even did The Daniel Fast for 21 days during Lent. There were lots of moments in between those stages where I went back to eating meat.

I know I feel better when I eat better. My challenges come in when dealing with social events or family gatherings. Just need help with sticking to it. Trying to get my own health in order (thyroid, depression, anxiety) and truly feel I can heal my mind and my body by just eating what it needs)

Hi, I'm pleased to have found the support team here. I started the Nutritarian thing on Saturday. Having found PBWF at the beginning of April and enjoying it. I read Dr Gregors books and then came across some success stories of Dr Fuhrman's last week, read the book The End of Dieting last week and dove in.
I'm three days in and 5lb down. Not hungry for the first time in years haven't counted a calorie in days. In fact I'm eating so much that I feel guilty because Ive been told for 25 years that I'm fat there for must deprive myself. Well lets just blow a raspberry at all those people who tell us that.

Hello Everyone.
I am starting an abbreviated version of the Nutritarian Plan TOMORROW! :) I haven't tried a plan this stringent before, but have been vegetarian for FOURTEEN years! (I had to look it up, I would have guessed 11 lol) I have the Eat to Live cookbook and am following Hello Nutritarian on social media.

I'm sure it will all be different once I get going, but I am definitely more worried about cutting out the salt/sodium than anything else. Soy Sauce is my dear friend!

I have also been slacking in the fitness side of good health and am hoping to get my daily step count back up (now that it is a bit warmer in MN I hope to be outside much more...3 inches of snow yesterday was a real bummer though!)

Other April 1 Goals:
~hit at least 6 glasses of water daily this week, bump it up next week
~cardio twice a week minimum
~decrease alcohol consumption
~blog about the plan (SparkPeople)

Overall my goal is to lose 25 lbs and develop good nutritional habits.

Hi Everyone,
My name is Kelly and I am from Colorado. I watched the PBS special on Eat to Live and thought it made sense. I have been a pescatarian (fish only meat) for about seven years but got into the carbs so that worked against me. I do enjoy eating whole and fresh food. As long as I don't get sidetracked I am successful. I am planning on using the support here will keep me on track! emoticon

Hi all, Good morning! I was on this plan about 5 years ago with my husband, and we both felt incredible. The weight loss was important, but the surge of energy and clear headed-ness was what made me a convert. My husband has type 2 diabetes, and within 6 weeks was off all medication and his numbers were all normal. Then we had some major life changes and feel into some really crappy behavior (Pizza, eating out, prepared foods) and we are now ready to both get back on track. I'm looking forward to the 6-week start and learning some new recipes during that time, so I can stay a bit ahead of the game. I have Hashimoto's Thyroid and Celiac disease and am hoping that by eating this way again, I can help both of the symptoms of those auto-immune disorders disappear. Thanks for being here!

Dreams and dedication are a powerful combination. William Longgood.

Gail, no one a perfect so no one can criticize. It is what it is, and you just have to keep trying cause when you stop trying you've giving up and we can't do that. (that is the way I look at it)

Since your having a hard time staying plant base, maybe try being plant based 80- 90% of the time.

Think of plant based as eating fruits, veggies, beans, nuts, etc most of the time. Fuhrman says to use animal produce as a condiments, maybe this will help you stay on longer.

My name is Gail. I am 55 years old and I have been on Sparkpeople intermittently with some small successes. I have tried to go plant based several times and I have sustained each interval a little longer each time. I don't want to be part of a group that will criticize me if I am having trouble sticking to the plant based diet. Please help me stick to it this time!

My name is Melissa and I am 55 years old. I was on Spark awhile ago but I found it difficult trying to be vegan.I was on the Eat to Live plan for five months. I lost 65 lbs after reading Eat to Live and The End of Diabetes. I then started to feel sorry for myself when I was eating with others and I would eat the SAD diet when I ate with others, the next thing you know, I was on the SAD diet full time. I started again in the beginning of Dec. and I have now lost 15 lbs of the 36 lbs that I had regained.

Hey @CHUBBYNOMORE3! I just wanted to say, in case you haven't see it, Dr Fuhrman has a book specifically about Diabetes. I haven't read it so I don't know how different the plan is, but that may be easier to start with for you. Hope that helps :)

Hello! I just finished four weeks following the guidelines from Eat to Live and I lost over 12 pounds (likely closer to 18 but I didn't weight myself at the beginning). My skin has cleared up a bit, I don't feel hungry, and I have way fewer cravings for all the treats I used to binge on regularly.

In the new year, my partner will be joining me for the 10 in 20 plan. I have tried a few recipes from the Eat to Live cookbook already and they have all been good, so hopefully the recipes on this plan will be too. I was already vegetarian (trying to be vegan without much success until this month) but my partner eats a lot of meat so his taste buds may take longer to adapt.

I'm surprised there aren't many communities and posts online for Dr Fuhrman's plan. I heard about it from a family member and it lines up pretty well with my understanding of the health benefits of a whole foods, plant based way of eating - with more of a plan for weight loss than others like Dr Gregor's Daily 12 (which I may use for maintenance, but that's probably not for another year). I'm glad to have found this team!

I have a long history of yo-yo dieting and binge eating disorder, so I like the idea of essentially eating the way I need to for my target weight range. It's fewer calories than my current maintenance, but still enough to get all the nutrients and satiety I need. And there won't be a big change in the way I eat once I've reduce risk from overweight. So I'm not white knuckling through restriction and then having to learn a whole new way of eating for maintenance. So far so good and I'm hopeful :)

Hi,
Have been pre-diabetic since 2011 at weight 224 (I am 5'4"). Went on Atkins off and on and yo-yo dieted for years. Blood sugar would yo yo too. It started getting bad again and I went on very strict Atkins. It didn't "cure" me though, even though I lost to my current weight of 159 over the years. I bought ETL (the Kindle version) a couple of years ago, read it and earnestly tried it for a couple of days, but at the time I couldn't give up animal products.
Came across Dr Fuhrman's PBS program night before last and here I am! I ate 2 meals from the program yesterday and was so full I didn't eat supper but went to bed WAY early. Not even hungry yet this morning. The food was DELICIOUS and my fasting blood sugar (before breakfast) was 105 (pre-diabetic range) and my postprandial blood sugar (2 hours after my first bite) was 110. And after a breakfast of orange, cantaloupe, and flax meal! UNBELIEVABLE. Cantaloupe always spiked my blood sugar horribly!
My husband is not on board. In fact, he is downright hostile even though he could stand to lose about 30 pounds, and has medical issues.

I am praying that he will change his cupcake-peanut butter cup- chip eating ways.

Glad to be aboard.

UPDATE: I didn't make the dinner for day one so I only ate 2 meals that day. I ate Day 1 again on the second day but with the dinner and dessert. Results: fbs day 2 was 99 (excellent) but only had 2 meals that day, post prandial was 97, (again excellent and with breakfast of cantaloupe, orange, and ground flaxmeal). pp after lunch was 114 (okay) after dinner was 119 (getting bad).
Fasting blood sugar this morning was 105.(anything over 99 is considered pre-diabetic).

Conclusion - No more desserts (there is one every day in the 7 day plan). Also watch the carbs. For example, Breakfast for day 3 was to be 1 cup blueberries, 1/2 banana, 1/4 c rolled oats, 1 TBS + 2 tsp pomegranate juice (pricy and carby) 1 TBS chopped walnuts, 1.5 tsp raw sunflower seeds.....115 g carbs! I don't know what he was thinking to say this is ok for someone diabetic (or even pre-diabetic) but there is no way I am eating that many carbs for breakfast. The orange cantaloupe and flax meal breakfast has 33 g. Just sayin'. Instead of the banana pomegranate carb bomb, I had 2 TBS organic chunky peanut butter and 110 grams of organic gala apple 18 g carbs. Total carbs planned for the day 126.

I think diabetic and pre-diabetic shouldn't eat more than 3 svgs of lower-carb fruit a day (berries are best) until their weight goes down and their numbers change..

I always enter the recipes to get the counts before I make them or eat them. I will let you all know how the rest of the week goes.

Hi

My name is Tiffany and I have attempted plant-based dieting in the past. I saw ETL on PBS and bought the book. I am no longer dieting. I am here to change my life. I want to be a part of a group that is like-minded and is will to share struggles, success, and recipes with me.

Karen,
Happy to see someone who may be a buddy with me in this adventure. I have been struggling here to stay motivated when there was no balance on this scale of life between my everyday life and this team. I actually found another team via Facebook which I joined this week, but have not actually been involving in. I find Spark, on the right teams, can be much more helpful.

With the apparent inactivity here and notice of the lack of a leader, I have not checked in here for about a week, barely having started. I live alone and I don't desire such a team if I am to do it alone.

I am happy to hear that you are feeling better. Your previous good eating most likely was helpful in your recovery.

Welcome Fay and Peggy! I'm Karen, and have been off sparkpeople for quite awhile now. I've been dealing with a bunch of health issues, and now have to get myself back on track. The worst was that I needed surgery to repair a hiatal hernia. For nine weeks I couldn't eat any seeds, nuts, salad greens, or many/most of the healthy foods that I relied upon. This completely wrecked my taste buds, my eating and cooking habits, and I've been gaining weight. It's quite discouraging. I'm determined to head to the local organic market tomorrow and buy just very healthy foods and get back on track.

Best of luck to you both. It seems like this group has faded quite a bit since I was on, but I'll try to stick around. I need the motivation and support to get back to where I was. I ate healthy for over a year and felt great. I got off two blood pressure medications, and my feet stopped hurting. I want that feeling back.

Hi! I'm Fay,
I have been with Spark for a few years but left in the last year. I've lost a few pounds along the way. But I found myself being drawn in mainly by the social element. Oh, I had some beautiful friends and miss them. However, at 84, if I don't buckle down to my health issues now, then when?
So here I am

Hi There!
I read Eat to Live about four years ago and it's just recently being re-read by me again emoticon
I found some Excellent vegan recipes from a cardiac doctor's book, Dr. Steven Masley, 30-day Heart Tune-up. emoticon My Mom has high cholesterol and heart problems and I try to be a good example for her because that's the only way she will eat healthy. I don't have a heart problem but my Dad and his side of the family has high blood pressure. I believe in preventative medicine and after so many years of educating myself, it's finally starting to stick, the plant based meals. emoticon BUT if i get too hungry and turn to junk food, I'm addicted and the habit perpetuates itself! emoticon
So let's hear it for "plant-based forever" emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Hey ETL team,

I've been in and out of SP for years without much success. I've tried just about every diet including ETL too. Finally, someone told me why I have panic attacks when I don't eat meat. For some reason, I need L-Tryptophan. I take a capsule two or three times a week and my anxiety is gone and I sleep better. A year ago I did 6 weeks of Whole30 hell and my cholesterol jumped up to 278. My doctor wanted me on lipitor, but I told her I wanted to try something different with my diet. She sent me to a nutritionist who recommended cutting back on red meat and eliminating coconut oils. Voila, my cholesterol was down to 236 within 6 months and I knew paleo was not going to work for me. My husband saw a PBS show on the end of heart disease and said he wanted to try it. (The man who can't live without meat!) A few vegan weeks later, I was having a panic attack at work and a friend suggested that I might be missing L-Tryptophan. Boy was she right and she's not a dietician or doctor.

I am now a happy vegan and we love the Fuhrman recipes. Next cholesterol test is next month. My fingers are crossed!!!

Remember, nobody can go back to the very beginning and make a brand new start, but anyone can start here and make a brand new end.

There's a difference between interest and commitment. When you're interested in doing something, you do it only when it's convenient. When you're committed to something, you accept no excuses; only results."

Hi I actually read all of Joel Fuhrman's book about Heart Disease! I found this group kind of by accident/coincidence. Glad I did. I also watched today the documentary on Netflix by Joe Cross about his juicing experiment for 60 days. Has anyone else watched it. I believe it is called Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead. I found it highly interesting. I first became a vegetarian a very short while ago after watching What The Health on Netflix. I don't know how to cook but I just bought a blender for making smoothies! I have also bought a lot of vegetables of late and have been eating them! I'm getting many servings a day. I'm a work in progress. Thanks for reading.

Hi! I've struggled with my weight FOREVER! Found ETL in February, sort of did it but then stopped. I've been mostly WFPB/Vegan since Nov 2016, but really want to clean up my diet. Currently around 190 lbs and would love to get down to a healthy, maintenance weight around 130 (I'm 5'6"). I'm curious how people use this group. I need mostly accountability. I've tried SP on/off for 6ish years and never had too much success with it.

I have been a member of SparkPeople for 5 years, I lost 150 pounds by counting calories, stopped doing that and gained almost all of it back!!! 5 years ago I read ETL and applied a few of the principals, but along the way abandoned them and plunged back into theSAD way of life. I reread ETL and The End of Dieting, watched Forks Over Knives, and have been watching a lot of Youtube videos of Nutritarians. I have committed to the 6 week program and have lost 6 pounds in 4 days. I am extremely fearful that I have abused my body beyond repair. I do not want to have a stroke or heart attack and am coming to the realization that it is totally up to what I choose to put in my body that results in the outcome. I look forward to being a part of this team!

Hello ETL Team! emoticon Jan.
I have heard good results from Dr. Fuhrman's Nutritarian Plan. I eat all the nutritious foods on the plan daily, except I haven't gone meatless. I have been losing weight by Dr. Oz one day off and fasting. I have gone a few days without meat and will attempt to go for the 6 weeks plan. I'm going to learn more about Nutritarian and eat up all the meat in the freezer before my I start in September. There is good information on the Team Forums
