Hi Brigitte. This is the only team that came up (today) when I searched for "soap"

I did not see the inactive leader notice until after I joined. I don't know the first thing about making soaps and creams or any other personal care items but would like to learn. The internet confuses me......

Would you consider becoming a team leader? Then you could try to post at least weekly to try to get some interest in reviving the team.

Hello I am Brigitte. I have been soaping for almost a full year now. I am starting to venture into lotion making. There is so much to learn. Thank God for the internet. Come on ladies, come back to the team. We can learn from each other. Please. emoticon

Hi, I'm Pam. I'm a 51 year old professional petsitter. I also am the full time caretaker for my mother and grandmother. Petsitting is somewhat seasonal and gets really slow in the winter months. I'm studying medical transcription to supplement my income. I would like to make soaps and candles as an additional sideline. I'm playing around with some M&P right now. I'm looking for some inexpensive SS pots to try my hand at cold process.

Name's Tessa or Tess if you preffer. I'm 21 and currently in MI though in the process of moving to WI.

I haven't started making soap yet but I'm very anxious to get started once I'm settled into my new location (which won't be happening until mid july unfortunately) but in the mean time I'm just reading up and trying to find as much information as I can on the subject :3

Nice to meet you all.

Hi, I started making soap/candles bout 4 yrs ago. Started it to give me and my daughter something to do together. She learned how to do it and quit, got bored with it, but I kept going with it. Then in 08 my mom was diagnosed with Leukemia, so I really started making soap and candles for her. That way I could watch what chemicals she came in contact with. And aromatherapy to help sooth her. Sadly we lost her in January of 10, but I still make candles, tarts, soap, diffusers, oh and I learned how to make hand sanitizer for mom. I am so glad there is a team for this. Will be nice visiting with other people who share the same interest.

Hi! I'm jan. I'm new to the team, but have been soaping for a little over 3 years now. My family uses our soap exclusively. I also make a lot of my own personal care items, like tooth powder and deodorant so that I can control the ingredients in them. I look forward to meeting everyone and to learn more about soaping.

Blessings,
jan

Hi, stumbled on this team when looking for something else, but I am so intrigued. I dabbled with soap making a while back, and loved it. Never continued with it though.

I copied the recipe for body butter and can't wait to try it. Any advice for a novice?

Very interested because I am getting a degree in Healthcare and furthering my education to become a Nutritional Therapist. If it can be healed with natural foods and vitamin therapy, then I say go for it. The drugs on the market today cause so many side effects that it is a catch 22. I know, I've lived it, and suffer the consequences everyday from medications I had to take to stay alive. I managed to turn around the disease I was diagnosed with with vitamin therapy and nutrition, I have dropped my cholesterol so low the doctor buzzes right by it, I have reversed high blood pressure with vitamin therapy under his guidance... so I know it can be done. I would love to enhance my career choice with adding my own line of body products that are all natural and the body butter sounds like a really great place to start. Any suggestions? I would love to hear from anyone who is involved in this.

thansk!!!

Cindy

Glad to have new people, I really don't know what happens to us after we join on this team. I seem to have lost track of everyone, unless they are on other teams, too. ?? We tried the soap swap in the late summer, and not enough people wanted to participate. Maybe we should try again! I'ld love to do it!

Just returned to SP today. I make candles, soap, lotion, bath salts, melts & fizzies, lip balm, etc. I do a little bit of everything.

But, w/ all that's going on in my personal life, I haven't really felt motivated to do it anymore. I've lost my zest for soap (no pun intended).

I have a very large weight-loss goal, too, and getting back on track has been very hard for me. I start tomorrow (shopping tonight after work).

Just wanted to be around people w/ similar passions...besides, maybe we could swap products or supplies...you never know.

If you always do what you always did, then you'll always get what you always got!

Hello everyone. I'm new to the team but not new to SparkPeople. I'm interested in learning more about making mp and cp soap. I'm hoping to start making organic and vegan soap soon. I've seen many how to videos on youtube and they all make it look like so much fun.

My name is Ida and I really am addicted to soap. A few years ago I started making soap myself, but lately I haven't made time for it.

Luckily I see a lot of inspiration here, so hopefully I am starting soon with making soap bubbles again!

My name is Beth and I've been creating soaps and bath products for a couple of years now. I've done MP, CP, and will be trying CPHP as soon as the lye I've ordered arrives.

I've been dabbling with selling my products instead of just using them for gifts, etc, but the business requirements of licenses, insurance, permits, etc. are daunting.

Goals:

Starting Date: 1/14/09

- Lose 5 pounds by 1/31/09 (met 1/26/09)
- Lose 10 pounds by my 30th Birthday on 2/28/09 (met 2/17/09)
- Lose 15 pounds by 4/1/09 (met 3/6/09)
- Lose 20 pounds by 5/1/09 (met 4/26/09)
- Fit into my favorite riding jeans by 7/1/09
- Tropical vacation with my husband at goal weight!

My name is Shelli. I started making my own soap and bath products about 5 years ago. I have several chemical sensitivities and have a lot of problems with commercial products. That's why I decided to learn how to make my own. Now I make almost all of my household cleaners and my laundry soap, too.

oops posted in the wrong place originally, sorry!

Hi I joined SP yesterday. I've been making toiletries as a hobby for about 6 years now but started crafting and selling full-time about 6 months ago.

I sell every weekend at an indoor market but have always felt strange selling "beauty" products when I'm 100# overweight! That's not the reason why I joined SP but it's part of my motivation.

I've decided to go on a journey to search for my Skinny Self. She's been around before but has been in hiding for the last few years. I do have other characters that are traveling with me at the moment - Large Marge (that's me now), Self-Doubt, and Self-Preservation. Mad Cravings usually shows up late at night and he has proven to be the most challenging thing to deal with so far!

Anyway, nice to know you guys are here. Looking forward to getting to know you.

Hi everyone!
I joined this team last week but have been with SP for a little over 1.5 yrs. I've lost 30lbs and would like to tone up a bit more. I am not looking to lose a whole lot more weight, maybe just about 8-10 lbs if that. I've hit a plateau and have been sitting here for a while which isn't totally bad bc I am not gaining. Anyway, I thought I'd drop in and introduce myself.

Is everyone ready for the Easter Bunny?

Hi. I am so grateful to find this team. It was very unexpected. My boyfriend and I decided a few weeks ago to learn to make soap. We like olive oil soaps and castile soap. I have very sensitive skin and have found the homemade stuff from the Farmer's Market works best for me. The chemicals in most soaps bother me. Also,my Mother has excema (pretty sure that is spelled wrong, sorry) and I would love to be able to make some soap for her.

Welcome Sweet! Definitely try making body butter sometime and put emu oil in it. I can't survive without it! Lotion is good as is my eczema soap. I'm half Seneca so I'm an amateur herbalist.

Glad you joined us! It gets addicting tho I will warn you!

Wow!!! I didn't know this group existed!!! (caught it off your siggy, Purrballs!)

I'm VERY curious about doing this - I am totally into learning about herbs, etc., and I also have eczema and am sensitive to chemicals and perfumes. That's what got me interested in this in the first place.

At some point this winter, I will probably get up the courage to try to make something, so we'll see! emoticon

Sure....I always start someone with milk baths or bath salts then work up to soap. I'm trying to post some of my recipes and so forth. If you want a particular one just tell me what you are looking for. I have a bankers box of notes and things I've done.

A good thing is to start reading on oil qualities and properties. Different oils are good for different things as well as differing shelf lives. Oils....best place hands down to go to is www.soaperschoice.com but you may need to get larger quantities than you need. Remember they do freeze! I mean if you google you can find places pretty easy. I just found this one http://www.zhealthinfo.com/carrier.htm

You tell me what you would like to see...and I'll get it and post it. I share my formulations since I don't have a shop that sells it anymore. I switched to a bakery.

I think for me starting out, I have no idea where to start - I noticed that same thing of people not wanting to share their formulas, which I can understand. But for the complete novice, any suggestions?

I checked out WSP and wow! I want to spend all my money now! LOL!

thanks for the welcome - can't wait to learn more!

Rose,

Welcome!!

Hands down the best thing for skin problems is emu oil. Yes it's from the bird and they are farm raised for this. Since an entire bird only produces about 4-5 liters of oil it can be costly but fortunately it doesn't take alot to do it's work. I make whipped body butter and add emu into it. Now for 2 lbs of shea and about 8 oz of soft oils I only put in about an ounce of emu! Organic and unrefined shea seems best as the good elements leave during refining.

The places to order from are vast and numerous. My favorite is www.wholesalesuppliesplus.com. Find a good soap group on yahoo and chat up the others or ask here. I'm in both areas. There are some charlatans out there that take your money and don't give you what you bought so best to order from a bigger company. I make everything from my own homemade gels for shaving gel or an undereye therapy gel, to doggie de pugh spray! Anything you want to know, recipes, oil qualities, oil properties, etc. Ask me! And in my estimation....the best "recipes" are ones you create yourself. That's what I've done and most of the gals that do this sort of thing are in the same mindset on that issue. Many will NOT share their formulations.

Greetings! I found this group in a round about way from the Redheads Unite group... I also have a problem with excema/dermatitis (never been completely diagnosed as one or the other... was something that's stumped people).

Anywho, I just got some 'home made' cand cream that I loooove and have been inspired to make my own, and also have been the lucky recipient of home made soaps. I'd love to get any any resources like books to get recipes from, or places to order the supplies (especially good essential oils).

Looking forward to learning lots and getting to know folks!

Wecome WG!

Formulations are numerous and too many to count. Same with websites showing them. I would recommend you find a yahoo group and discuss or ask things here. I've made my own stuff for over 40 yrs so if you want to address something please feel free to ask. I make a mean eczema soap as well as an acne bar. Starting with say bath salts or something easy like that is a good place to start. Best lye calculator I know is www.soapcalc.com but you need to know some basics first. A GREAT book in my opinion is The Soapmakers Companion. There are alot of books out there that are horrible. One gal on my one soap list actually made a web book and I found so many mistakes in it that it was dangerous! So be cautious! A few pointers:

You do NOT have to wear a hazmat suit to use lye. Simple precautions are good like goggles to protect the eyes, long sleeves for small pops, keeping vinegar and a good water source nearby, maybe rubber gloves if you'd like and a good ventilation!!! I actually use a respirator (like a gas mask) if I am doing a lot of it and remember I make at least 10 (42 bars of soap) lbs of oils at a time which is NOT what normal people do.

NEVER add your water to your lye...it can explode or volcano on you. ALWAYS add your lye to your water.

A good way to cool your lye solution quickly is to use ice instead of water. The lye will melt it quickly but not heat it up as much. If using goats milk I always freeze it so it doesn't burn the milk. You can use ANY liquid to make soap. Ask me about some fun ones I've done....like my husband's homebrew. Beware alcohol though.....it will heat more and is more apt to foam up on you fast. You can use it but you need to be aware and cautious.

I'll try to post some more formulations and please everyone else...feel free to join in with some you've done!

Hi, I'm from Arkansas. I haven't considered making soap and nice stuff before. I love buying it. I came across a recipe for a soap to give as a gift. I would love to begin making soaps, perfumed lotion, salt scrubs, sugaring stuff, etc. I am really excited to see what you are writing about and would appreciate any recipes or links you can give me.
This is a great non food reward.

Hello everyone! I'm Kim. I'm from Indiana and have two DDs, 7 & 4. I enjoy making soap, mostly CP, but some MP as well. I really haven't done a whole lot of it though, and I'd love to get more experience and eventually attempt some shows if it turns out any good. LOL. Good to meet everyone.

Jules welcome! I do it all....and have made soap for 40+ years. If you like salt scrubs you really need to try some emulsified sugar scrubs! I have my formulations at my bakery and my internet is only at home now so I will try to remember to bring em home and post so y'all can try em. Guess I should include some lotion making ideas because that stuff is so ridiculously easy to make there is no reason to buy someone else's!! You get the benefit of it being fresher and you can tweak to help whatever skin condition you want. I deal with eczema but nobody knows it because my stuff keeps it in check. Besides...I like KNOWING there are no parabens in there! (breast cancer survivors know parabens are bad news....)

Welcome again!
Trudy

Hi Juls, Welcome to the group and to sparkpeople. You're gonna love it! Congrats on your marriage. My next to oldest daughter was married in Vegas about 11 years ago. I haven't tried my hand at soap or candles. I make salt and sugar scrubs, bath teas, and lotions, shampoos etc. The lotions, shampoo's and such I buy in the bulk without fragrance and then add my own fragrance, essential oils, and color. How do you make your scrubs?

Hi, I'm Juls from Bodfish, Ca. Just joined sparkpeople last week, looking to make friends with people who share my interests and are trying to lose weight and get healthier. I haven't made soap or soap yet, but I really do want to learn. I did make a salt scrub, that I really like and that encouraged me to try more. I had started buying supplies, but relocated and who knows where anything is right now. I'm hoping joining this group will get me motivated again and maybe I'll have some homemade stuff to send my girls for Christmas.

Brenda, WSP is wholesale supplies plus. I make mine just letting it sit in the fridge. No cooking it, no insulating it just cool it quick as I find for me I like the texture better when it doesn't go through gel. I've made lotion bars if that is what you mean by solid perfume. The best sellers I had going to shows was good ole cp soap and lotion. I sold a bunch of lotion. I make a good acne bar of soap and an eczema bar. I've made soap since I was 4 years old and my granny and I dripped our own lye. If you've heard that line before Brenda then I'm on a yahoo group with you. The only ones I'm in right now is international soapers and chandlers and the letsgetswapping group.

Glad to have you join us!

Welcome AutumnFlame, It's nice to have you join us.
I haven't tried making soap yet but I do bath and body products. Am very anxious to learn all I can about making and improving my products. It sounded like you had a very rough year-now it's time to take care of you!

Hi. Short intro. I live in South Florida and I am a soapie. I make mine in the crockpot. Instant Gratification. No waiting. I taught myself off of the internet. The internet is a great tool. I started by trying the M&P and thought this is OK but I want to MAKE soap. I have also made solid perfumes but with the shows I do they didn't do so hot. With the climate in Florida the bath salts clump alot so I stay away from them.
WSP is that also a Yahoo Group? If not I think I am on a Yahoo Group with you.

I didn't realize you're from MO too Trudy. How far from St. Louis are you? My daughter's boyfriend lives in St. Louis so she's over there visiting his family twice a month.
I may be interested in some of your surplus. I'm too much of a novice to know what a lot of it is. I'll have to research some of the names or get you to decipher.
You've been through a lot healthwise. I'm so glad you're getting straightened out. At times these doctors have to be reminded that it's our bodies and our decisions how we need to be treated.
I'll talk to you soon re: the lotions & potions.
P.S. I'm an old farm girl too-grew up on a farm in north missouri

I guess I should introduce somewhere where y'all can see it! I'm on the other side of MO than Judy. I live north of St. Louis in a house 12' up in the air on stilts on the banks of the Mississippi River--it's up because we're in a flood plain and yes we sometimes boat into the house! I own a bakery currently, used to own a soap shop but it didn't make enough. In Jan we were changing this place to the bakery and I got to where I knew I had to have carpal tunnel surgery. I went in for pre-op testing and an ekg showed I had a heart attack. Now the only sign I had was I was easily tired and a bit maybe more out of breath than normal but I thought it was the work I was doing up here and the fact I was working on installing flooring and laying underlayment, etc. The cardio verfied it was a mild heart attack and that I had to drastically change the diet. Not easy to do when you're a binge eater and own a bakery! I just turned 46 so I'm young to have a heart attack! I've been overweight since early 20's because of a thyroid problem and Polycystic ovarian syndrome so I've done research online and forced my doc to change my meds and low and behold it's working even though he said it probably wouldn't! Doc's really get on my nerves!

I tried WW but I hate that and it's so far away from me that makes it hard to go to. Then a pal from a yahoo WW site suggested SP and here I am! Doing alot better now I found the binge group!

Your experience with a chinese practioner only makes me want to try acupuncture even more Judy!

Anyone want to know anything just ask me. I'm an old farm girl and brutally honest.

let me see what else....third marriage, two kids, two dogs, three cats, do any craftwork imaginable, etc.
Trudy

I'll formally introduce myself. I live in MO not far from Kansas City. AM a wife, mother of 4 and a grandmother. I need to lose over a hundred pounds but am putting it in smaller goals so I won't get discouraged or impatient. I'm almost 57 /next month/
and had pretty much resigned myself to the idea of being overweight, in pain, depressed, and tired the rest of my life.
As a last ditch effort, I went to a Traditional Chinese Medical Practitioner that had lectured at my daughter's massage therapy school. My life has been changing for the better ever since. I've gone off sugar and bad fats. He would suggest small things at first-nothing I couldn't handle and with each success I would be stronger and more willing to try the next hurdle. Then he suggested I keep a record of what I eat and the calorie intake. I've always hated trying to do that but I agreed. That's where I started looking for an online site to help me. I checked out 2 or 3 and didn't like them. Then I came across SparkPeople. That was it! I love this site.
It has helped me sooooo much. I told my practitioner about it and he was excited too. He's now suggesting it to his other patients that are going to him for weightloss.
Sorry to write a book! but I just get so excited / first time in a long time, I can see where I'm going.
Thank you SparkPeople and all the wonderful supporters.
Judy
