Welcome to the team! Labs are great dogs, but you need to work with them everyday.

Welcome Cara and congratulations on your lab puppy, walking partner and faithful companion. I just love labs even though they are quite active!!! I just had to put my 14y/o yellow lab down after a short bout with cancer. Have fun with yours and will look forward to seeing pictures on your Spark Page!

Welcome! Labs are wonderful friends and very loyal and protective. Train her now while she is young to walk on leash. If you take her to a trainer , fine. If not, use your walk times to get her use to not pulling you. Labs are very bright and learn fast. They love to please you. Little by little get her use to the leash and how you want her to walk. If she starts to pull you to where she wants to go, STOP, turn around and walk in the opposite direction. When she starts to pull again, turn and go back the opposite direction again. Keep this up, she will soon learn that you are in control, and if she wants to continue walking she will not pull, and all will be right with the world.
Do this in a quite place first with little or no distractions, this way her attention will be on you.It may seem to be a little bit of work in the beginning, but it will leads to years of pleasant, happy walks in the future.
When she gets full grown , you will be glad to have her under control on walks, saves a lot of wear and tear on your limbs and nerves.
Teach her as many commands as you can think of. They are like little sponges at this young age. Do one command at a time till she has it down , then start the next on. Especially to "come "when called, great if she happens to get loose while you are out. Also teach "leave it" ( so you don't have to worry about her picking up some nasty stuff on your walks and getting sick, also saves the furniture and food in the house). To stay IN the house till you give her the command to go out, so she don't go charging out the door when it is opened. Some dogs will learn to bring you their leash when they want to go for a walk ( good to teach, this way you will HAVE to keep up your exercise routine.)

emoticon They are a lot of fun, a little effort put forth in the beginning will give you years of joy like you never had.
That's our fur babies!! emoticon

She will make a GREAT companion!!! Labs are VERY smart and love to be active. I have an almost 4 month old Lab/Pit mix. He loves water, is SUPER quick at learning new commands and has boundless energy! Just make sure she had a good positive outlet for her energy and walks are great for that, because they give you another opportunity to train. Make sure you train her (or take her to puppy training) if you're not already. Puppies can be destructive when they don't have boundaries. They can also be BIG chewers so make sure she has toys/nylabones to take that out on instead of your furniture. Labs also LOVE water! Mine has his own kiddie pool that he plays in.

Good luck with your new fur baby! And good luck with your goals!!

Hi, my name is Cara and I have just gotten a labrador puppy mix who is about 4 months old and wearing me out! I've never had a big dog before, and I am trying to use walking her as an incentive to keep myself, and her, active. I'm excited to count her as my exercise companion!
