Hi, and welcome to Sparkpeople! I am over 40 too and it is a lot harder than when I was 20, so I totally understand. But it can definitely be done!! Read the articles on here about nutrition, especially portion control. That's where most of us get a reality check. And use the food tracker. For the first few days, just track what you normally eat, but make sure you track your portions correctly. You may be amazed at what you find (I know I was!). The other piece of advice is to start moving (if you aren't already). If you already have an exercise program, awesome! If not, then get moving. Even just walking to start. There are also some great videos on Sparkpeople that you can use, some only 5 minutes long!
Sparkpeople will definitely give you support, so you have come to the right place! I have made some great friends, including local ones that I love running into now and then. When others are on the same path you are, it is so motivating to talk and share good and bad.
