HI I just joined the team..I live in town, but there are sooo many birds in our neighborhood..squirrels too...I have many kinds of birds that come to the feeder outside my big front window, but with the exception of the cardinal and blue jays, I don't know what they are..Oh yeah..there WAS a red headed woodpecker out there last week, but I haven't seen him since then.

Hi all! New to the team. I don't see a lot of different birds much, but very thankful to have some faithful hummers. I get such enjoyment from watching them. Looking forward to getting to know you all.

Hi Ramona,

I lived in Montgomery for about 5 years. One of our favorite things was to visit the Hummer/Bird Study Group during the banding sessions across Mobile Bay at Fort Morgan in the Spring. Have you ever been? The Sargents, who started the group, are terrific folks. emoticon

Hi Everyone,

It is nice to meet you all. My name is Jane and I have just recently joined and am looking forward to getting myself back in shape and losing weight. I was excited to find a team related to birding. We have really enjoyed the birds who have been visiting us lately. The hummingbirds have started arriving here in western Maryland. I saw a female for the first time this spring.

My husband and I are going to be going to Cape May, NJ next weekend to do some serious birding. I just hope the weather stays as beautiful as it has been this past weekend.

Hello! I in Mobile, Alabama. I get several magazines and have been watching birds for quite awhile now.

We live in the country--and our nieghbors have huge ponds in their yards and lots of woods around. We have a great variety of birds. My husband is greatly fond of the pileated woodpecker that we have visit our bird feeders. I like watching them all --buntings, bluebirds, towhee-to name a few.

The big bucks are working as a nurse for the government. Actually not, I just am a very frugal person and my parents taught me how to save, which at this time is a very good mindset. What is a professional birder? Sounds great. I bet your days are a whole lot more fun than my days. Lets see, today I found out one my clients had head lice for the 3rd time! The bins I want are the Swarovski EL 10x42. I made the mistake of trying them out at a store and I was in love... emoticon But I think I will be satisfied with the Stokes.

Woah, the Stokes are NIiiiCE! emoticon

Lol, they're waaaaay out of my price range as are the Bushnells, so I don't have a comparison but those are awesome.

Your dream nocs must cost at least $2,000, holy sh*t! I bird professionally, but it hardly pays the bills - where are the big jobs at? emoticon If it's not the bushnell elite 10x42 I don't know...maybe the EL doesn't stand for elite after all.

The WISO outing sounds like fun! emoticon

Hey, thanks for the welcome you birder gals! Actually Butiamletired, I never thought what EL stands for, suppose it is Elite BUT, the Bushnell's are not what I covet. I have some Bushnell's that are ok, they are old and have no idea what they are. They were not expensive. I just bought some Stokes DLS 10x42 for a quarter of the price of my dream binocs. Maybe when I am rich. The Stokes must be made by Viper because they came in a Viper Vortex box. Will be trying them out for real this weekend when the WI Society of Ornithology has an outing in my county at Lake Michigan. Can't wait. Last year we saw a red throated loon and trumpeter swan flyby. (besides lots of other). Want to guess again? If you think the Bushnell elites are better than the Stokes, let me know. I have a 30day money back gaurantee. emoticon

Hey there. Elite 10x42 lol!

There are a couple "elite 10x42s" but you must be talking about Bushnell's water/fogproof - definitely drool worthy. Bushnell's natureview line is much cheaper and more than enough for the casual birder, though they're not roof prism (which I've always wished I could afford!) they're porro =( Still, they're a fifth the price and I used a 10x pair for one feild season, they performed well. Whew...want those though!

We don't get that many new members but there are a handfull of active ones, never fear. Welcome!

I'm sort of finding my way around this wonderful sparky place and decided to join your team because I love to watch birds. Anyone know what my id means? Not that I have them, I just lust for them. I live in Wisconsin and am gearing up for the warm weather and Spring migration. Woohoo! emoticon PS. Where is everyone? Last posting was last month.

I have a paint, a pinto, a mustang and one just plain horse. They're not too breakable, but they do break a few other things now and then. (Fences, gates, windows, etc.) But between them and the chickens, we always have plenty of...um...uh... FERTILIZER for my flower beds! My husband also breaks a few horses every summer.

It's amazing how much happiness animals bring to us. My dogs, always there to meet me when I come home, the birds, and My horses. I've always said my horses were my drug of choice when stress tries to take over. When I can't take any more, I grab a brush and spend time with the horse. The birds are a constant way out of myself. Just watching them can soothe away the cares of the day. I'm SO GLAD I live in the country.

Wow, what an amazing story Blanch. I can definitely understand birds being a source of inspiration - I had a similar revelation when I realized I wanted to study birds as a career. I was a bit lost too, and
I realized suddenly that I could do this for the rest of my life. So glad to have you here! Check out the "Guess Who?" thread - it's a blast. emoticon

Hello SP GUYS! I am so happy to find this place.... Big Hellos and hugs to everyone.

Watching and feeding my backyard birds is very special to me. It helped my regain my sanity. About 6 years ago, I went through a rough divorce and loss of my business. I was in deep depression and on meds and basically thought my life was over. I was going to a therapist several times a week and couldn't stop crying. He asked me a single question that changed my life. He said "name 5 things that do not depend on another person that makes you happy". I was stunned. I couldn't answer that question. I went home and cried. How had I ended up in this dark place? I could not think of a single thing that made me happy. Up until that point my life revolved around my husband and "our" business. I curled up into a ball and wished the world away. Finally, on the third day, I sat at the kitchen table with pen and paper and I was determined to find ONE THING that made me happy. Nothing would come. I stared at blank papaer. At some point on the day before I had filled the feeders and I had an influx of very noisy and very hungry Gold Finches. I couldn't hear myself think for their chatter. I watched them spend more energy knocking each other off the feeders and defending territory than actually eating and I felt a very strange thing. I was smiling. Wait, this actually made me happy. Watching the interaction and silly beauty of these creatures made me happy. I HAD DEFINED ONE THING THAT MADE ME HAPPY. I started to write more. I life green and growing things. I liked the feel of my dogs head in my lap. I actually liked hard work that makes me sweat. And, I liked sharing good things with people. I had a start. It was the first step up out of a very deep and lonely place. And, it was all because of the birds.

The picture I get of a couple of dogs chasing the cats is fantastic. BUT, remind me some day to tell the tale of the neighbor's dog in my yard. Not a happy time.

Thanks for the offer, but I think I shall have to turn it down this time.

Thanks for the comments. I agree, it is part of nature, but I'd much rather see the hawks come in after the birds than the fat cats. And I really hate the damage they've done to my hard work. I don't have a very big yard and 1 cat can chase away a lot of birds in my space.(I am also a cat lover, but in the house, not after my birds.) Because my yard work is mostly new, I don't have a lot of shelter yet but it's coming. Trouble is the cats can hide in the shelters, too.

Hm, I don't know your options with the cats, trapping might be the only way. Our neighboors have 2 cats who catch birds and rip them to shreds on my steps on a regular basis...it's just what cats do. If you find one with an Ivory-Billed Woodpecker in its mouth...call me.

I agree, but make sure you provide the little birdies with easy cover to get away from cats. There are products at farm and garden stores to keep dogs away, don't know if they work for cats too.

Hi Bhooee nice to meet you. I guess you could trap the cats and take them to the shelter.I have cats in my yard and they are not a problem to me. I just figure if they catch a bird it is part of nature.

Hi, everyone. I'm relatively new to bird watching (but not new to needing to lose weight. In the last 2 years I have totally demolished my back yard and I'm not busy at putting it back together for the birds. I 'm looking forward to learning about birds with you and I hope someone can tell me how to get rid of the 2 cats that frequent my back yard. I don't know who they belong to, but they've ruined my bird bath and I've watched them catch some of the beautiful birds I've welcomed in.

There's always a lot to be thankful for if you take time to look for it. For example, I am sitting here thinking how nice it is that wrinkles don't hurt.

Welcome, everyone! Silverwitch has mentioned the Guess who? thread. It is still going. Only took me over two months to figure out Blackheart's last bird. Hopefully the one I'm starting will be easier. Good luck!

Hi everyone, I'm Rachel, 21, from an island on the coast of Maine. I'm sort of a professional birder, I've worked researching birds in New England, the Chihuahuan Desert, Central America, the Carribean, and I'm about to leave for a 5 month stint in Hawaii. It's great to see a birders' group on SP! Looking forward to meeting all of you. emoticon

HI there,
My name is Debbie. I am fairly new to SP, (about a month). We are in Washington State (Seattle/Tacoma area). We have a handful of bird feeders in our backyard and a few hummingbird feeders. It sure is fun to watch the different birds come by for their meals.
There are some now that aren't too skittish and come right back after I fill the food. Funny how they just watch from another tree, or see me in the dining room looking out. Me watching them or vice versa. Who is watching who? LOL

emoticon My name is Pam and I'm from Great Falls, MT (center part of the state in the chinook zone; -22 a few weeks ago, + 43 now) I was a Park Ranger for two summers at our Giant Springs State Park. I grew up on a prairie farm. My home is right next to the city with open hills and fields to the SE. I have Meadowlarks that come nest every spring-I feel so blessed when I hear the first one of the season. Maiasaura, duck billed dinosaur, was discovered near here. Find birds fascinating. I noticed many on this team are from the East. Hope to learn about birds in your areas.

If you are persistent, you'll get it.

If you are consistent, you'll keep it...

Hi...my first day on Sparkpeople, and I'm just trying to find my way around.
I have been feeding the birds for less than a year, and I paint pictures of them. I work from photos, and I thought I could get good photos if I fed them on my deck, which I do, but it's still hard to get sharp photographs! I do have some, and wonderful bird people I have met have given me some great ones to work from too. I have some marvelous photos of owls and have painted a baby screech owl, which came out good.
It's been fun exploring this new interest, looking up birds to identify them, and focusing on birds in my artwork. I'll enjoy reading more about all your birding experiences. Joanie
