Hi I'm Laura.
I have a 13 year old sheltie named Spunky that, when I was 14, I bought halfsies with my dad at a pet store, unfortunately. It has been quite a battle, but I love him, even with his quirks. :)

Hi! I'm Sherry and my sheltie is Willow. She's a blue merle. I got her a year ago August from the Humane Society. She was about 6 years old at the time and someone had dumped her out on the street...can you imagine?! She's the sweetest girl. We live in an apartment complex and she's just the darling of the place...they even put her picture on their Facebook page. She seriously sucks up to the maintenance people because they carry doggy cookies for her. She gets me out walking...we do a couple miles a day, and since it's Winter she's getting me running a little. The colder it gets the happier she gets!

Hi! I'm Shelly. My Sheltie is a 5yr old tri-color (Black/Brown/White). We adopted him 3 yrs ago. He was severely abused before we adopted him. He is a true mama's boy.

I've been with sparkpeople for just over a year now and have shed 47 lbs. I am 51 yrs old, married and just moved back to Wyoming.

Hi, My name is Marianne and we have our 2nd Sheltie now. He is almost 5 and named Captain. He is the typical Sheltie, lots of energy-which is good for me to keep me moving- and just a sweet pleasurable dog. Excited to interact with more groups!

Hi!
I am Melanie from Gatineau/Ottawa Canada and I am new to SparkPeople.com!

My boyfriend and I are proud owners of a 6 month old sable Sheltie girl named Kyara. We got her from a breeder here in Quebec. She's the best! Never cried at night in her crate, and never soiled her crate. She was trained at about 3 months and a half (it took us 1.5 months to fully train her and we live in a third floor Condo!!! Shelties rock!). We took her to puppy school and now are doing basic obedience with her once a week. Otherwise lots of playing outside, walks and a few hiking trips keeps this girl busy! She just got spayed therefore she is taking it ease for a couple of weeks.

I plan on jogging with her for short distances in a few months. I will start with 5 minutes run 5 minutes walking in the next couple of week. Any suggestions on this would be great! We also just got a sailboat and plan on bringing her along for short rides and eventually a weekend trip. Anybody have a sailing Sheltie? It would be great to get some tips on sailing with her.

The only difficulty we have with her is that she barks on the leash when she sees strangers. We are working on this one.

She is also very shy with strangers but we socialise her pretty good without pushing her too much. She is getting a lot better and recognizes many of our friends, but I think she will remain a shy girl in front of strangers. We'll keep on using positive reinforcement to associate good thoughts with meeting new people!

Well I am very happy to be a part of the For the Love of Shelties SparkTeam :). Cheers!

I am Carol from NE Ohio. We have had several shelties in our lives for the past 19 years. We started out with a sable - Bonnie Wee Lassie (Bonnie) whom we purchased as a puppy from an Amish farmer. She was a very spunky girl who was determined to run our house and actually ran my husband. At the time we got her, we had a shepherd husky mix. They would later be joined by a flat coated retriever (our son's dog). followed by Princess, a tri-sheltie that we planned to foster through NEOSSR. When we first were introduced to Princess in 1996, she was a very scrawny bag of bones, who had blown her hair due to being treated for heartworm. She was assumed to be about 5 years old, due to the condition of her teeth. Well, it turned out that fostering her was out......She immediately became ours when she adopted me, gradually accepting my husband from a distance. Princess hated thunder storms. Though she kept her distance from Rod, he was surprised when this black, white and brown furry ball landed on his chest while he was lying in bed. She had almost flown through the air after a flash of light and a loud thunderous boom! Princess would follow me through the house when I was at home, never leaving my side. She could sense all of my emotions and I was in tune to hers. When we lost a precious son, she stayed right beside me and would cuddle into me. to comfort me. As the years went on, she would get more feeble, but she was not ready to leave me. For almost a year, I would carry her out the the bathroom so that she would not have to go up and down the steps. She and I were a team. During February 2009, I knew it was time to let her go. When I looked into her eyes, she let me know. If her age had been determined correctly when we got her, she would have been about 18 years old. To let her go was extremely hard for me, but I knew she was tired and I did not want her to suffer. I held her in my arms as the liquid went into her veins and she fell into eternal rest.

We had lost our Bonnie, four years earlier. When we knew it was near her time to leave us, I started looking for another sheltie. My husband had told me he did not want anymore dogs, as losing them was too hard. I reminded him that their were many more looking for a loving home. At this time, the shepherd husky had crossed the Rainbow Bridge and the flat-coated retriever had moved out, along with our youngest son. So we were a home of two shelties only. I started looking on Petfinder.com and found this beautiful sable who looked so much like our Bonnie. She was staying with a foster family through Purebred Rescue Organization of Ohio, Inc,. located down in southwest Ohio. Knowing my husbands feelings, I decided to send a picture to him of this precious sheltie girl. She sure got his interest and on a Saturday morning....normally we would be at the camper,,,,,,we were up at 5 AM (at our home), heading to just north of CIncinnati, about a five hour drive. When we got there, the foster parent told us that she did not know if Brittany (the Sheltie) liked men and that so far she had never gotten up on her couch. So guess what!! As soon has my husband took a seat, she was right up there with her head on his lap!! We had taken Bonnie and Princess with us and they got a long fine. Needless to say, on the ride back.....Brittany was in the back seat with them and had joined our family. She was about 5 years old, and had been owned by a breeder who decided she and her mate were not needed anymore.

Bonnie went on to cross the Rainbow Bridge on November 18, 2005, four months after we had gotten Brittany.

In August, 2006, we would become a family of three shelties. We adopted Heather, a very light honey colored sheltie. She was an extremely hyper and agitated sheltie, who had been found running loose. At the time, I felt she was probably a little over a year old, due to her hyperactivity level. However we have had her now for 4 1/2 years, and she is still easy to stress out and hardly ever calms down. She has become my needy dog. Thankfully, Brittany is so much more calmer and balances out the two who are still with us.Brittany is now 10 or 11 years old. I dread the day when she leaves us. She is such a sweetheart and so very loving.

Don't let your past hold your future hostage.

Hello all you sheltie lovers. This story is about a sheltie, just stay with me... I had a bearded collie named Mac who died of old age in 2006. He was 15 years old and had a good long life. After he died, I decided to look for an older rescue dog (knowing full well I couldn’t/wouldn’t keep up with a puppy) to welcome into my home. I found a female blue heeler at the dog pound, on death row. She, Betty, at the time appeared to be eight to ten years old, was in tough shape but had the sweetest temperament. I couldn’t let the dog pound’s bad policies allow her to be destroyed – so, I took her home.

With a little loving care and exercise, she lost 30 pounds (from 63 to 32#), which in turn, revealed a much younger dog. Today, after having her for a few years, I estimate her to be six or seven years old. She is a beauty. I’ve never had the breed before and knew very little about them when I adopted her. I have heard many comments about them, both good and bad, but Betty couldn’t be smarter, more dedicated or loving, not to mention, stubborn, bold and mischievous. I refer to her as my blue healer.

I can’t take responsibility for choosing my sheltie. After having Betty for only a month, I recognized her need to be a pack dog. I work full-time and she was not adjusting well to being alone during the day. I found a rescue sheltie, rather, SHE found a rescue sheltie, she picked him out, and the pack was formed. The sheltie was rescued from a puppy mill. He was irresistably cute but had some bad behaviors that had caused him to be adopted and returned to the rescue six times before I adopted him. Today, the two of them make a lovely couple of blues and I credit them with keeping me motivated to exercise – just trying to keep them happy and healthy.

I joined this SparkPeople site a few days ago. I’m giving it a go and happy to find some dog-lovers out there, staying busy.

Hi everyone! I'm a 45 yr old living in the Baltimore area along with my husband, three shelties and 2 cats. The vacuum stays busy here!

The pictures of my babies is on my sparkpage along with a little of their history. We have the Northern Chesapeake Sheltie Rescue located just 30 mins from us and have adopted 2 of their rescues and foster when we have the space.

Our first girl, Cleo was purchased from the pet store where we fell in love with her. There was no doubt that she was going home with us so we called our vet and asked his advice on the store and breeder. We fell in love with the breed thru her and that led us to finding the Rescue.

I'm doing phase 1 of the South Beach to kick start a better eating style and thank goodness I like veggies. emoticon I have about 50 pounds that I wish to loose total but have my first goal set at 30 pounds to allow me back into some of my dresses and shirts.

I look forward to reading some of the threads and stories about other shelties.

Hi, I'm a 62 yr old woman from CT, with one husband, three kids, two grandkids and one Sheltie. Shady Lady is a tri-color girl 9 years old. She got demodex mites this summer and has been on ivermectin for two months (does not carry the gene which rules out the use of ivermectin that goodness), and they are almost gone. This has cost me almost $2,000 so far, but she's worth it. There is a picture of her on my spark page. I had another Sheltie, a sable, Dusty Rose who died at 11 yrs old of kidney failure. She was a runt, who stole my heart. She died in August of 2,000 and I got Shady Lady as a puppy in September. Shady has also had a couple of seizures and the vets do not know why. I am trying her on glucose free food. I'm interested to read others Sheltie stories. Sue in CT

Hi All, My Sheltie, Kirby, is almost 14 years young. He is my devoted gardening "supervisor" and follows me everywhere. He is deaf but understands what I want. I'm glad he 'nags' me to take him for walks. For those who have puppies, Shelties mellow into the best of companions.

Hi! I'm Jill - an Artist, Art Instructor, wife and mother. I'm owned by one very talkative Sheltie named "GEM". He is my third Sheltie over the last 25 years, and I am totally hooked. I grew up with Collies so this was a bit of a switch though looks are the same. Collies don't bark as much! Oiy vey!
You can see my boy on my sparkpage. We also have a Yellow Lab and she is very bossy, so you might imagine the arguing that goes on in our house at times. They are both our kids now that the two legged ones have moved out. Gem in my studio dog, and is never far from my side.
I look forward to chatting with all of you and talking about our walking partners - the four legged kind!

Painterly Yours! Jill - A "Yankee" living in Campbell River, BC, Canada on Vancouver Island.

Hello Team,

My name is Matt and I discovered the Sheltie world in 2002 when our tri-color came into our lives. She is a little manic at times, but the best dog ever. Lizzie has withstood a bulkier retriever brother Max who is three and now a human brother and sister. Lizzie truly has the most understanding gazes even when the house is buzzing with the kids, Max and the cat. I'm new to SP and I'm glad I found this group.

Hi, my name is Sally and I live in Alabama. I raised, showed, taught obedience classes & slept with Shelties for many, many years. When my health problems started causing me to be unable to show I became a show secretary. So now I just sleep with shelties. lol

Some of you just might recognize me from the info I gave above so... Hi! shoot me an email or leave a message here, I would love to know your doing Spark too.

Hi Debra and welcome to the team.

I’m so sorry you lost your baby. I know how it feels. I had a sheltie who passed when she was only 9 years old. Poor thing just had a lemon of a body and to have her treated for all her ailments, she would have spent most of her time at the vet so we opted to send her back to God. Currently, I have two shelties now, ages 7 & 13. My 13 year old isn’t doing so well. I don’t expect her to last much longer, maybe a year if even that.

If you click on the team photo, it will take you to Sheltienation. They have a slew of pictures that will melt your heart.

Hello! I can't believe I found this team of sheltie lovers!!! I typed it in as a fluke when I was looking for a team and up pops "For the love of Shelties"! Maybe this team can help with not only my weight lose journey but my broken heart as well. My beloved sheltie Zsa Zsa passed away on August 14th. I have been so down in the dumps I can't seem to get my head up. Hope to meet some of you or all of you! The pictures of shelties have already brightened my day! I'm thrilled.

Hi Pam,
I had that problem with some of my pictures too. It turned out the files sizes were too large. I decreased the resolution and made the file sizes smaller. You could also do that by cropping. If you have Photoshop LE or something like that you can manipulate your photos. Gotta get pics of our babies up on our sites!

Hi, everyone! I'm Pam from Burton, MI. I have 2 shelties. Jesse, 12 years old, is a beautiful bi-blue and Cody, 2 years old, is a beautiful tri. I have a picture of Cody on my page, but I can't seem to download any of Jesse from my saved pictures. Hopefully I will have some soon. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone and all the wonderful shelties!

Hi everyone! My name's Lisa, and I'm a fairly recent member of SparkPeople. A month ago, my husband and I adopted our first Sheltie, a sable & white male named Nike. My husband and I thought we both would enjoy a Sheltie, and we were hoping that a Sheltie would be a good match for my other dog, Honor (she's a 1 year old Alaskan Klee Kai). Nike came to my little family from Sheltie Rescue, and it's been such a joy to watch him blossom and come out of his shell. He's terrifically smart, and is catching on super-quick to most everything. I'm hoping that he can join Honor in Rally and Agility when he settles in more.

Looking forward to getting to know everyone!

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing! Sort of like having 4 kids--so much to do! Still I can't imagine how much fun it must be! I look forward to the pictures.

My name is Kim and I have 4 sable and white shelties and a sable collie (he thinks he is a sheltie. I have been involved in dogs all my life. My parents owned a boarding kennel and my mother was professional handler so we went to a lot of dog shows while I was growing up. emoticon

Hello! I've been on SP for a year but just found this team. I am on the Herding Dogs team but not many shelties there. We got our first sheltie, Genie, when I was maybe 5 or 6, and I turned 50 this year. I waited a long time to get my own first sheltie, Bunny, a sable, and then a year later we got another dog from the same breeder, Max, a tri. Max died first (cancer), and we lost Bunny in 2000 to a brain tumor. I can still get the waterworks flowing just thinking of them. Now we have another male Tri, Rascal, who we adopted from the Sheltie Rescue of So. Cal at about age 8. He is 14 or so now, and every day becomes more frail from an inoperable chest tumor that is growing very slowly and making it hard for him to breathe. I love shelties and will never have any other kind of dog, but it is SO hard to lose them!

Hello! I'm new to the Sheltie team, but not to Sheltie ownership. I adopted my first Sheltie, a mahogany sable, back in 1982. She passed away in 1993, but by then my in-laws and my sister had been converted, and still have Shelties. My mother also adopted a Sheltie, which grew to almost collie-size, so was a bit too much for my 81-year-old mother to handle, so he came to live with me, then to another family. My baby, another sable, is 10 years old this summer, and alternates between being a little princess and a crotchety old man. He really didn't like sharing the house with another dog, especially a younger, bigger one. They would torment each other like brothers!

My Tipper is completely neurotic, but I tell people that's because there's a fine line between genius and madness. I will never have any other breed.
