Hi! I'm Becky and this weekend will be my first half marathon. A bit nervous, but I know I can do it. This spring my daughter got me to do a 5k with her (it was 32 degrees out). For my first 5k, I didn't think the 40 minute range was too bad. Since then I've done 2 other 5ks, a 4 mile run, and the Patriot's Run (run as much as you can) in which I ran 10 miles.

Unofficially I have also run a 10k and run/jog/walk a half marathon about once a week.

Distance has never been my problem. I have managed to bring my pace down from a 13 min/mile to 11:14 min/mi.

Off the topic of the Half Marathon ... last Friday I finally achieved my weight loss goal from the last four years!!

I'm really looking forward to learning a lot from this group. And hopefully running will stick with me for a long while.

Hi, I am Renee. I have been on Sparkpeople for 3 years in November. 5K related, I did my first one probably 1.5 years ago out of shape and still overweight in around 38 minutes. Last year I did my 2nd 5K for Race for the Cure, chipped time 37:37, still over weight a little less out of shape....this year after my personal crap I chose not to participate....one because of the cost and two out of shape and overweight.
Yesterday due to the high coverage of the Wall Street Sit, taking over my town Portland, which is slightly interfering with the Portland Marathon tomorrow I thought, why the hell not. I like working towards goals and this far out beats an age goal or a vacation goal, cause no one is going to notice if you didn't meet it. One year from yesterday I registered for and paid for the Portland Half Marathon, and if I don't meet my goal, which I do believe I will, slight public embaracment is GREAT motivation. I know this will help me towards my weight loss goal, while I train for the HUGE event in my life on October 7, 2012.

I want to STOP Shopping While Fat, it is no fun! (COMPLETE)

Hi I'm Melissa, been doing 5ks for years, finished my second 10k last week in a little over 58 minutes so figured it was time to go for the half. Just started training, the race is January 22 so hoping being a part of this group will keep my motivation strong through the holidays and winter training.
Happy running all!

Hello everyone. My name is Daphne. I just turned 40. I have run a couple of 5ks, a 10k, a 10k trail run and now I am ready to move up to half marathons. Tomorrow is day 1 of my training. I am going to use the Hal Higdon's, Novice 2 program. I was going to start next week, but I accounted for the fact that I am going on vacation and may not have access to a fitness center and we are going to be halfway up some mountain so tomorrow it THE day.

Hi All:

I am about to turn 49 years old and just started running this year. I set a goal to do a Sprint Triathlon and a Half-marathon before my 50th birthday. This year I have run 3-5K races, a 4-miler and a 10K, and I have one more 10K before the end of the running season.

I will need lots of help and encouragement for the next year and I am looking forward to gaining inspiration from all you Sparkers.

Hello. My name is Deb and I'm 50 years old and proud of that fact! I am also training currently to run a half marathon. I have completed two 5K's, one 10K and will run in the Relay for Life next month which is a 8K. My goal is to run a half next spring. I started running a year and a half ago to just run a 5K to see if I could do it and fell in love with the sport. My ultimate goal is to run a full marathon.

Hello, Just wanted to introduce myself. I am a 30 something mommy of a 1 yr old in WI who has completed 2 half marathons (one pre-baby and one post-baby), and will be racing my third in October. I started in the racing world doing sprint Triathlons (which I also still complete). My new goal is to compete in a half marathon in every state in the continental US. So far I have completed Iowa, Wisconsin, and in October it will be Minnesota. It may take me 10 years or more, but I am determined to do it. ANyway, that is me in a nutshell...so want to know more, just ask! emoticon

Hello! I'm new over here. I finished the C25K a few weeks ago and have moved on to the B210K. I'm currently on a little hiatus because I ended up with bronchitis and am still trying to get over it. I've been enjoying running so much, though, that I am now hoping to do at least 1 10K in the not-too-distant future. I also am wanting to do the Disneyland Half Marathon next fall. I have a year to train for it, so barring more illnesses like this one, I should have ample time to train for. Before getting sick, I was already running approximately 4 miles at a time. Can I train for a half-marathon and still keep my runs at 3x/wk? I'm looking into doing the Jeff Galloway plan for run-walk-run. Doing lots of research while I'm resting. Anyways, just wanted to pop in and introduce myself! Judy

Hi everyone!! Im Michelle and im excited to be running my first 1/2 nov. 13 th. It was going to be in oct. But multiple things were not working out for it to happen. Im going to do a couple more 10K to get experience. I have been running about 4 months now and I never believed I would enjoy it so much or be able to do this. Always just said wow look at them run and how do they do it? Now here I am somewhat running! I m running up to 8 mile now at a12 mph pace. I was not following a sch. And just adding on each week. I am running outside with traffic mainly but im looking for a close better place to run esp when I get more.miles to run. Searching the net for a running group cause I know I need to learn alot more and would be kinda nice to run with someone once in a while. Going out today to look for a belt that was recommend to get for alittle water and some energy snacks as I increase my distance I was told I should be doing the drinking and snacks. Jam doing strength training 2-3 days also to help. Well that's me! Looking forward to reading more on the threads here and sharing our victories!

I'm Judy. I'm signed up to run my first in las Vegas in Dec & my 2nd shortly after my 50th birthday in Austin in Feb - where I lived for 17 yrs before moving to NY 2 1/2 yrs ago (but who's counting?).

I'm a back-of-the packer, which totally frustrates me, but I have at least improved since my first 5k a yr & 1/2 ago.

Running definitely wasn't love at first footfall for me, but there's definitely something about it which got me hooked - mostly the feeling AFTER I run!

Running the US one state & HM at a time & hoping to raise money for good causes at the same time

Hi My name is Kayla. I have just joined even though I have jogged/walked my first 1/2 2 years ago and now I am ready to really start training and try running the whole half next summer. My step dad is a full on world travelling marathon runner and is going to do a little coaching for me.

I am excited because this time my husband will be waiting at the finish line for me and I am hoping by time that I get to race day to be a lot leaner and fitter! And like I said before my goal is to run the whole thing! The race is next march so I better go so I can get running!!

I just ran my 1st 5K saturday! I had only been running 1 week when a client invited me to join the run.... I did and I loved it! Actually ran the whole thing in 36 minutes! I realize that is underwhelming to a lot of you actual runners, but I'm only 2 weeks in now so
I was just happy to not be last! LOL And I ended up with a MAJOR PAYOFF this morning! YAY!! I'm now addicted and plan to keep running!! It IS a sort of large leap from 5K to 13.1 but what can I say... when I start something I jump in with both feet! Hope to be like the rest of you soon!!

I'm Mary Anne. I was a ghost to Penny for the Hood to Coast Relay. Hi Penny!
She is so nice I knew all of you would be too.
I'm 57 and have done 3 half marathons. I was planning to do one in Sept., but life was too busy and motivation too low unless all of you light that fire underneath me emoticon

I am planning to do the Borgess "Run for the Health of It" half marathon next spring.

I also like to do triathlons. Did my last one for the season last weekend. Just threw that out there in case there was someone else on this thread that did those.

And my profile picture is of my wonderful husband Mike and the other man that has captured my heart, my first grandson Chase.

Looking forward to getting to know all of you better.

Hello there! My name is Faith. I am 53 years old, spent 11 years in the Marine Corps, got out, had more kids, still married to my Marine. Three years ago, I was diagnosed with Lupus. Lots of meds, gained a lot of weight. I am now back to my healthy weight and running. Currently, I run at least 7 miles on my short runs and up to 11-12 on my long runs. I can go days and occasionally weeks without a flareup and then all of a sudden, I get a flareup that has me so sick. I plan on running the half maration Heartbreak Ridge at Camp Pendleton in October.
Oh, and by the way, I too, use the Nike Plus app and I love it!

Hi there! I'm Joanna, just turned 29, and as my sister puts it...I've got one more good year in me so I better get started! HA.

A HM is a distant goal, but one that I've thought about for years. I figured I should join now and start absorbing all your wisdom before I start training.

I've run on and off for years, but never much distance. The farthest I've ever run is a 5k and that was a year ago!

I'm currently running about a mile and a half and have been stalling any increase in distance. Definitely a fear thing...but I'm working on it.

Wishing is not good enough.

Hi, everyone! I've been lurking for a while. I wasn't sure how to begin, but I guess introducing myself is a start. :-)

I'm Beth & I'm 34. I started running last year after several of my coworkers participated in the Pittsburgh half marathon. Their enthusiasm really inspired me. It was so hard at first, but I'm glad I pushed through the initial agony-- I've grown to love it. Over the past year, I've done seven 5Ks and I'm doing a 10K in September. I've been steadily increasing my mileage over the past six months. My longest run right now is 8.5 miles... amazing to me, because I never thought I'd be "athletic" enough to be a runner.

The 2012 Pittsburgh half marathon is in May and I am going to be ready!! emoticon

Hello all!
I'm new to the team, but am training for my second HM. I have been "running" on and off since high school. In high school I only ran to train for my sports (tennis & soccer) and then only ran while chasing down balls during said sports. After college I started running again, 5ks to start, then I got into sprint tris, and have done one half. I saw a shirt the other day that describes my relationship with running:
"I love running.
I hate running.
I love running.
I hate running."
I think I'd love it a whole lot more if I were faster, but I'm just not there yet. At least I'm working on it. My next half is coming up in mid September. My goal is to keep up my running even after I'm done training, and to hopefully do an event (shorter distances most likely) every other month, even through our nasty Michigan winter.

Hello to everyone :)
I'm attempting to walk my 1 st half marathon in Nov. in MA at the" All Woman and 1 Lucky Guy " 1/2 marathon. I'm so excited but have never been a runner or walker for that matter! Always active in softball and volleyball but this is a whole different ballgame so to speak. I have never run on a regular basis due to pain in my feet( from pronating too much I found out) and now wear orthotics. Less discomfort so thought I'd try walking. SO GLAD TO HAVE FOUND THIS TEAM PAGE!!!!! I really had no idea where to start. Friends of mine walked the course last year and came in at 3 hr. 20 min. I have slowly been trying to get a pattern of training but it is inconsistent. Some weeks I'll walk 3x's for 3 miles each sometimes 1x for 5 miles. The best I've done was yesterday for 6.7 miles in 2 hrs. 15 minutes. I see many tips on this pafe I can use. Hoping however to see if anyone has any tips for a newbie......I am open to suggestion...have 11 weeks left to train :) GOOD LUCK to all those competing !!!! emoticon

Good evening all,
I started SP three months ago. I have a gym membership, but I find myself hitting the pavement. There is something about running on the open road that is very calming; It's my "me" time. I started just a mile at a time, every other day. My personal best is 8 miles at about a 10-minute-mile pace. I haven't run this much since high school over 30 years ago. I want to run a half marathon with my 18 year-old son.

did my last big run yesterday - rnr vir.
next week is my taper, and then race week!
it does get tough towards the end. i ran over 2 hours and then had to work a 10 hr day!
wasn't sure i was going to make it...but i did
last year i did a half w/o much training-distance wise but was training for a tri. i actually did much better than i thought!
only bad thing i remember is that i didn't use glide on my legs and 1/2 way though i felt the burn! walking into a store to get bite to eat, i tried to walk normal so it wouldn't look like i had a load in my shorts! lol!! not funny at that time!-
maybe a tmi- but a good tip: use glide before your runs to prevent the burn!! emoticon

So happy to find this group. To not only get support but to provide as well. I am NOT nor have i ever been a runner or athlete for that matter. I started training for my first half back in Nov 2009 and completed the RnR New Orleans Feb 2010 (2:43) and cried my way cross the finish line because I did it! Then decided to sign up for the RnR Providence (2:51)this past August. So anyone can get up and run. I am proof! In fact, I ran the Providence without much training because it is too hot to run outside and I am not able to get up and run in the early morning hours because of my special needs child. I too tossed and turned at night worried about even trying to run both days of the race but once you start its a great feeling.

Anyway, I am trying to find my next Half to run because I dont want to stop and maybe I will get better and beat my times maybe I will always be a slow runner but at least I am active and moving.

I'm Tonya and I'm on my 7th week of an 18 week half marathon training program. I am doing the Women's Half Marathon on November 6th in Scottsdale/Tempe, AZ. I am both excited, nervous, and angry about doing this race.

Why angry? Because the routine of the schedule is making running a chore instead of a treat and that frustrates me. I talked to my group leader last night and he encouraged me to go back to a 4 day a week schedule versus 5 days per week and to change up my routes.

I also thought I'd come here for a little extra support :)

“The grass is not, in fact, always greener on the other side of the fence. No, not at all. Fences have nothing to do with it. The grass is greenest where it is watered. When crossing over fences, carry water with you and tend the grass wherever you may be.” - Robert Fulghum

Hi everyone! My name is Amanda. I begin training for my first half marathon on Tuesday (really Monday...but my first run is on Tuesday). The half marathon is in November. I wanted to run it last November but I got injured and had to stop. I really want to do it this November because me & my husband plan on getting pregnant soon and I want to do it before having kids. Anyway, I'm excited. I know I can do it. And I'm glad I found this team!

Good luck to everyone else as well!!

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart."

Hi everyone! My name is Jason, and in exactly 50 days, I'll be running my very first half marathon down in St. Charles MO! Couldn't be more excited, especially since I'll be running it with my brother...good support system there!

I've been "seriously" running for about 3 years now, and have enjoyed it immensely. Longest race I've done is a 10 miler down in Phoenix AZ...so I'm looking forward to finally saying that I've completed a half marathon!

Best of luck to all you other half-marathoners...go get it! :-)

Hi everybody!

My name is Maggie. I recently fulfilled a longtime dream by traveling around the world for a year. I arrived home last month, and my feet are already restless again! So I figured a half marathon would be a nice challenge to tackle while I save up for my next adventure.

I'm moderately active -- I like to ride my bike, I do a lot of yoga and I've trekked up and mountains all over South America, Africa and Asia -- but I've never been much of a runner. My asthma and a persistent shin splint problem always seemed too overwhelming to overcome. But I changed my running technique, which fixed the shin splints, and a new doc has helped me manage my asthma.

Right now I'm doing Couch to 5K to build up my endurance. I'm hoping to run the Rock N Roll Half Marathon in Indian Wells, CA on Dec. 31. I know that's pushing it for a new runner, but I'm willing to work very smart and hard.

It's great to see such a warm and friendly community of other people working toward similar goals. Nice to meet you!

Hiya! I'm Lisa and my first half-marathon is at the beginning of October (the 16th, to be precise - so 9 weeks away.)

I won't lie - I'm terrified. Even though I have multiple 5Ks and three 10Ks under my belt, I've been suffering such extreme anxiety that it's started to keep me awake at night (in fact, I wound up missing a 4 mile run this morning because of night spent tossing, turning and fretting over... I'm not exactly sure what - lol)

I'm not a wee lass - in fact, I still weigh over the 200 mark. And I think that might be where most of my anxiety stems from. Up until I started the C25K and began running, I'd let an extremely sedentary lifestyle. Now I do Yoga for Runners & Pilates along with my training schedule. But I'm worried that, despite the training, my body will just give up and tell me I've abused it for far too long and to eff off - lol.

Are there any other runners out there experiencing anything similar? Any advice anyone can offer up to half-marathon n00b?

Thanks everyone!

Hello! I started walking again in September 2010 and started to run/walk again just 3 1/2 weeks ago using the SP 5K rookie training and I am feeling great about it.

7 years ago I walked a half marathon and came in almost last place, but I finished. That was a big moment for me. In May 2012 there is a Half Marathon that runs along a lake in my home town that I want to run/walk. Eventually I want run/walk the full marathon that goes around the whole lake and has some elevation changes also.

Good morning. Joining this team has encouraged me to up my registration in an upcoming race from the 5K to the 13.1. I'm getting excited but having 2 problems.
1. one of my feet is hurting when I first start -- for about a mile, then after I am done for a couple hours. a friend thinks it's sesamoiditis -- an inflammation of a little bone that keeps your big toe on track. I have good shoes and am using ice. Any suggestions from the team?
2. I did a 1/2 in June and by the end my fingers were so swollen I couldn't open my water bottle. I had just water on the course b/c the gatorade is TOO sweet. After 4 bottles of water and a bag of salty trail mix on the drive home I was fine but, again, looking for practical advice. I am a 14 min mile walker, so we are talking 3 hrs on the course.

congrats to everyone on all the great accomplishments I'm sharing vicariously.

Oh, to Donna, I, too am a 2008 Breast CA pt. I did a run 2 d after dx (gold in my age group n the 2 m walk) 12 d after my mastectomy (silver), during chemo (bronze and silver) and the day after my last chemo (gold) . It really helped me thru.

I have a dream... I will run a HM before I turn 40. I have 18 months. I think this is plenty of time.

It feels like I have been learning to run forever -- I started about 1 year ago with C25K. I have yet to run an entire 5k without stopping for a walk. Last time it was a short walk -- I am definitely improving.... but it is taking so long.

So I've joined this team, looking for some motivation to keep going and setting my sights high. Baby steps are just not working for me.

Hi! I am running my first half-marathon in February, hopefully! I originally trained for a half-marathon a few years ago when I lived in PA but I got sick late in training when I had worked up to 8 miles and didn't think I could get back on track and make the 13 miles since that was much longer than I'd ever run. Then, I was going to do the inaugural Rock 'n' Rock half here in Savannah this November, but now I'll be out of the country. So next up: a half marathon on Hilton Head in February! I'll start officially training once I get back at the end of November.

Hi! After some trial and error, I discovered I won't run regularly without a race in mind. So, I have joined the team to be held accountable for running!!! Hope the team is up to it. ha ha.

Hi everyone!

I may be joining a bit early, but I have two half marathons planned for 2012. I'm a 10k runner at the moment, and I'm looking forward to training and working my way up to my first half next spring. I can't wait to see what I can do!

Hi Team ! i have been an avid runner off and on over the past two years. 15+ years ago in High School i use to run 5-6 miles a day. I did it back then as a form of staying in shape for hockey. After high school i gotten away from exercising all together and then started a family. I've added some weight over the years and i'm now looking to take charge of my body again. This means eating healthier, laying of the beer, and exercising on a regular basis. i've dropped about 10 lbs or so in the past 2 months that i've been running . I've decided that i want to run my first marathon in the Spring 2012 (Pittsburgh). Between now and then i want to work my way to that point. I've already signed up for my first 10k (Sept 2011) since high school. I'm hoping to run a half marathon sometime this fall. Not sure were i'm going to run it but i'm going to.
My training right now consist of running 3 miles 1-2 days a week, 4-6 miles 1-2 days a week, and then i throw in a longer run between 6-9 miles once a week. When i travel for work i also am able to get 30-45 mins in on the elliptical machine. Most of my running is done outside through the trails of Schenley Park (Pittsburgh, PA).
So i'm hoping that now i've joined your team i will have the needed support to complete my first half marathon this year.

Hi and welcome to all the new members!

MLH148 I've been a walker that is fairly new to running. Been working at it off and on for the past year or so but had a couple of setbacks. But I've walked a half marathon and two 15 mile events before. The 15 milers were last year and this year at the Bataan Death March Memorial at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, which is about 2 1/2 hours from me. Awesome event to commemorate the original Bataan Death march. This year there was over 6000 participants, about 2/3 or more were military men and women, either current or past. It's an awesome event. I've started working more on using the Jeff Galloway method of walk/run intervals. Right now I'm doing 2 minutes running, and 1 walking, which I really like. You can do shorter or longer intervals. I'm no where near ready to do a half marathon all the way through that way, but want to do a fairly local (2 hours away) half in December and I hope to do more of it running but know part of it I will probably have to do with just walking. You're doing a great job with the ones you've done!

I'm a walker not a runner. I did a 13.1 for my 50th birthday in June. was dead last but had an OK time. I am going to try to do one in Oct that is local. I did the one in June in 3:04. If I'd known I was that close I probably could have broken 3 hrs. that's my goal for this one. It won't be as hot. the one in Oil City was very nice -- a shady bike trail by a river so you could listen to an ipod. The one coming up is on city streets so a little of a challenge but last year had runners at 3:30 so I should be OK. I did a full marathon 10 years ago (The Wineglass in NY in the Finger Lakes -- ALL FLAT OR DOWNHILL!) but moved from there to PA and hate a long drive before or after a race.

Hi all. I just joined this group. I'm fairly new to running. I started in July of last year as a way to help me get into shape and start to get back my muscles. I'm a breast cancer survivor, and was really zapped of energy and motion for awhile. I decided I wanted to run the Disney World Princess 1/2 Marathon last February as a way to motivate myself to do this. And I'm proud to say that I did run it, and I completed it, with a time of 3 hours, 8 minutes. Now I'm signing up for my second 1/2 marathon - this time in Disneyland (the Tinkerbell 1/2 marathon) in January 2011.

I haven't been keeping up my running since February, which is horrible. I did run 2 5K's since then, and in one of them I set a PR for me - finishing in 37 minutes. But now I have to start training again. I'm thinking of doing the Jeff Gallaway method, to help me get to a 10-minute mile.

There is a thread on the team called "training" (I think) and I picked up a plan from a link there called "marathontrainingacademy.com" I'm doing the intermediate, and my sister decided on the beginner one. If you're not too into running you may like these plans, they have a bit of cross training built in.

Hi all.

I'm not hugely into running, however, i think i'd like to change that. Right now the mainstaple of my fitness regime is P90X, but i'm getting pretty sick of it. (its been 15 months). I do still run a few days a week, but i'm not working towards any specific goal. Just like to run sometimes. :) In the past, i have done a couple 10k's, so i figure the next step is a half-marathon.

But, where to start? If anyone can direct me to a solid beginner's trining program that would be awesome.

Started running again after a 24year hiatus. For the first time in my life I have a small group of co-workers who have run tri's, half's and full marathons. It is so exciting and motivating to work with people who share my love of not only running, but also the nutrition facet that goes along with it.

I'm running my first half in November. I am a little apprehensive because the most I ran loooong ago was a 10k. I know with the help I will receive from my co-workers and this team I will do fine!

My group just got the YES from the lottery for the Twin Cities 10 mile on 10/2. I didn't think we would get picked so I am surprised and excited! I started running in April and am totally in love and addicted. While I know it's not a real HM, I am going to train like it is and thought this was the best team for me. If this goes well, i will register for a marathon in May. We'll see...

Happy trails!
