I've contacted the surgeon's office and had an online consult with him and sent them back a signed authorization form to release my medical records and that's where I'm at now. I sent the form back early last week, so I plan to check with them at the beginning of the week to see what's next. My brother knows I want to have the surgery and he's supportive in me getting it, but that's it.

Hi Julie! Have you taken any more steps toward getting surgery yet? Hopefully you're getting some support from some people in your life. Take care.

Hi everyone.

I've been here (on this team/forum) for a few years now, but this is my first post. I have been thinking about weight loss surgery since 2005, but something always got in the way. Sometimes it was just that I didn't have health insurance, once I was just about to begin the process and lost my job and another time I was somewhere about a third of the way there and lost that job.

In August of 2014, I went to a WLS Seminar done by one of the bariatric surgeons in my area and I had my first appointment with his office the next month. From the beginning, I wrote on all paperwork and told any office staff that asked that I was planning to get the Duodenal Switch surgery. All of them said ok. I found out in February of 2015 that regardless of the fact I wanted the DS, this guy was going to perform a Loop/Sadi/Sips (pick a name they are all the same surgery) on me! I was LIVID as I was not there to be a guinea pig for him. He had been performing the RNY since at least 2005, but the Loop (etc) had only been around for a year or so, plus it was not the surgery I wanted AT ALL. They are very different. And I even confirmed with the surgeon I now plan on having my surgery with (Dr. Keshishian (aka Dr. K) down in Pasadena, California) that that surgery would never work on me given my weight and BMI. Anyway, I had expressed my disgust at having almost been duped by this guy on a WLS message board I belong to and someone there told the surgeon I was telling lies about him, so his office called to reschedule my 6th-month appointment for a date when he could be there. Oh yeah, and by this point, this would be my 6th appointment with the guy and I had NEVER met him before. (And I had read a while later this guy had the habit of never meeting his patients until the moment they are wheeled into surgery and about to be put under and then seeing them once before being discharged from the hospital). So that appointment day comes and he's upset that I'm telling "lies", but also admits that yes, even though I want the DS he would have performed the Loop on me. The appointment basically ended with him leaving to perform another Loop surgery on a patient who didn't ask for one and we both (silently) fired each other. I also found out that if patients looked at their insurance forms, he was billing it as a DS, which is a higher cost surgery than a Loop. And I found out that he had not cleared it with the hospital he was working at to perform the Loop either. Can you tell I'm still PO'd that he was doing this to people? He's no longer performing the Loop (at least according to his website), but how he still has his medical license I have no idea.

I had pretty much known even before seeing that quack that I did not want him performing surgery on me because I knew he had only started doing the DS maybe 3 years prior. His office would never answer my questions about how long he had been performing it, how many he had done, how many were successful, etc. But I went to him first in case my insurance gave me issues about going to the surgeon I really wanted to go to, Dr. K. His office doesn't take the insurance I had at the time, so I went back to waiting until I had the right insurance.

I finally got the insurance I needed in early 2017 and a few weeks later my mom passed away. At the time she was pretty much the only person who knew I was considering WLS (minus people I knew online in forums and FB groups for the DS). She was going to be the one to drive me down there (I live about 5 hours North without any stops), and basically be my nurse while down there and for a short time after coming back home since I have mobility issues along with my other health issues. So I went from thinking I would be having surgery within 6 or so months to it being almost 3 years later and I'm just in this standstill of procrastination of not contacting his office and moving forward. I just feel stuck without my mom here. I don't know if the procrastination is that I'm scared or because I'll be doing it more alone (more people know about it now, but nobody I want being my nurse afterward).

So, yeah, that's my story so far. I ramble a lot, sorry about that.
