I think I'm a weird one with my corn problem, but I do believe that food sensitivity is a major contributor to lots of health issues including weight problems and PCOS.

Thank you so much
It's very intresting never heard of that corn can be responsible for pcos.i. I don't eat much corn but I guess it's different for everyone

Thanks

Kaza, I'm a former PCOS patient too. I was lucky to find a nurse practitioner who put me on a very wonderful elimination diet and I found I can't digest corn. Once I took that out of my diet, my insulin levels dropped and all the PCOS symptoms went away. I now have two kids with no help from fertility treatments.

The surgery should help. Pay attention to your digestive responses to foods when you start adding foods back in. If you get headaches, gasiness, upset stomach or very tired, avoid the new food for a few days and try it again when you are feeling better. Getting those insulin levels down not only helps the PCOS, but it helps with regulating the hunger and it keeps you from getting type II diabetes later in life.

I hope you see great success with the surgery.

I am from central North Carolina. I am an empty nester. My husband and I like to travel and just returned from Israel. I have struggled with this weight for many years now and finally made this decision when I ran into a friend I hadn't seen for a long time. She had the surgery and looked great. I went to my first visit in November and now I begin the liver reduction diet tomorrow. I get my firm date Wednesday which I think will be May 12.

I'm looking forward to beginning this journey with those of you that have done it.

Hello everyone... I am from North Texas, Close to DFW, I am 30 years old with a wonderful husband and 3 beautiful kids that are my inspiration for this.I have been struggling with weight loss for so long, since I was 15 years old. I have been talking about weight loss surgery for 2 years now. No one ever thought I would actually do it, nor did I myself. I found a doctor that took both my insurances, I have been working the last year really hard to get this surgery and guess what! My surgery date is May 9th. I start my pre-op diet tomorrow. I am so, so excited. I have overcome all my fears of having this surgery and I am more than ready, i just don't like the idea of having surgery. I have really bad anxiety and I don't take medicine for it but I have had 6 surgeries and it is just scary, but I know I will be fine. I have already lost 20 lbs on my own in the past 3 months on my medically supervised weight loss. My doctor says I should lose 20 lbs on my pre op diet and the another 20 pounds by my 2 week post op visit for a total loss of 60 lbs by 2 weeks post op which is really exciting and that would put me under 300 lbs for the first time in 8 years!!I would like to find some ladies that i can talk with on a daily/weekly basis and kinda go through this together, be buddies, perhaps maybe even find some ladies in my area and go walk some trails or something. We all need lots and lots of support, we all need someone to cal when we are feeling low, or tempation sets in. I cannot weight to share my story and success with all of you and to hear all of your stories.

Hi I am from SE Texas. I had my surgery March 11th, 2013. I am struggling with a couple health issues while losing that are non curable and has slowed my weight loss down tremendously.

Hello, I live in High Ridge, MO which is southwest of St. Louis. I had my surgery on March 6 and am reaping all the wonderful effects of the surgery and my lifestyle changes. I can only say I was dumb for waiting so long and letting my fears delay it as long as I did.

Hello Everyone..

My name is Sabrina and I reside in the San Francisco Bay Area, California. My VSG surgery is scheduled for 04/16/14 and Kaiser in Richmond, CA. At this point, I am now beginning to be nervous whereas I was not previously. Reading through the posts has helped me to answer some of my questions and calm my fears. Hello, I'm from Connecticut and had gastric sleeve surgery on Jan 21st...have lost 36 lbs so far and like fitting into smaller size clothes. Have not had to buy new ones because my closet comes in all sizes...getting rid of the larger ones now. I feel better than I have in years.

Hello, I'm from Idaho and 8 weeks post-op. Doing great so far. I've lost 32 pounds so far and am enjoying being able to fit into some of the clothing that has been hanging out in the back of my closet for the last few years. I'm looking forward to getting to know new people taking the same journey.

Hi all, I'm from Washington state.
Started my journey last July with the information meeting, met with the RD and had my consult with my surgeon. Had to take a break before finishing up. Hopefully will have all my pre-op etc done by April.
I'm really looking forward to this. I am so tired of being overweight and not being able to lose the weight no matter what I do. Started Spark again after being gone for a couple years.
Any advice while I wait? Any specific concerns I should bring up with my surgeon?
After going over all the options, I think the sleeve is the best one for me.
Looking forward to getting the support I need here.
Thanks,
Cyndie

Hi guys! I'm Shelley from Arizona and when I joined this team, I was in the process of preparing for the sleeve surgery... but now, I'm on the sleeved side! I had surgery on December 5, 2013, and I've been doing great! I'm now ready to begin being actively involved in the team's forum and supporting others just as I was supported.

I hope everyone is staying very warm and safe on the roads during this very cold and brutal time. Take care of yourselves and stop by to say hello if you get a chance. Take care!

you can do it - did he put you on a liquid high protein diet - that is what my doctor did - can't help but lose when all you do is drink 4 protein shakes a day for 2 weeks - I lost 14 pounds before the surgery.
You will do fine - the surgery is the easy part :)

Thanks for the warning about coming home heavier than going in... that could be a shock!

My surgeon wants me to lose the weight primarily to shrink my liver for the best surgical outcome. So, I am doing my best to lose 10 pounds. He won't cancel the surgery unless I lose less than 5 pound. It's good incentive to not get postponed...

@ECBANDMOM...

Don't anguish too much as you approach surgery. I know I did too, but if there is one thing I can share, is to focus on the positive outcome you will ultimately receive. You'll be better physically to handle your role with your family members. Although I haven't hit goal and I'm a year out (too much grazing of the wrong foods!), the weight I have lost has made all the difference in my day-to-day activities. I'm getting back on track--something I anticipate being much easier with this tool than all those other times of losing and gaining things back! Best wishes with your surgery!

Best wishes with the surgery, Sue! I know what you mean about trying to get off some pounds before-hand. My struggle with that resulted in my surgery being postponed. That being said, different surgeons require different prep. Some will tell you they didn't have to do any pre-op weight loss. The proponents of it say it shrinks the liver and makes it "easier to lift" to access the stomach. That sort of makes sense.
Another odd positive to dropping some weight beforehand is that I actually came home from the hospital heavier than when I went in. I guess its from all the IV fluids and whatnot. Had I not dropped a couple of pounds before surgery, I would have been REALLY depressed at that post-surgery weight. It all comes off eventually, but it was a shocker at first! emoticon

Hello everyone!
My name is Sue and I'm from Nebraska. I followed this board for awhile about a year and a half ago, but fighting with insurance companies put my surgery on hold. So, now that I've managed to make financial arrangements (self-pay, yay?!?) my surgery is scheduled for November 25th, 2014. It is a very fast turn-around this time. Only thing left is all the pre-op labs and tests, plus my surgeon really wants me to lose 7-10 pounds ~ now that is a challenge!

Hello everyone, I am from KY., near Mammoth Cave National Park. I have been battling my weight all my life. I am the proud mother of 3 beautiful young women who are grown. My nest is empty now, so it is time for me to do something for myself. I am tentatively scheduled for surgery 12/19. I am in the precert/work up stage. I am nervous about doing this as I am sure everyone is. I have been a nurse for 30 years. Not used to being the patient. I currently work at a school and am doing my surgery during our Christmas break. I am told that should be sufficient time to recoop. I don't have a stressful or strenuous job so hopefully all should be fine. I do worry though about the hunger and staying in control. I hope and pray this is the right thing to do. My husband is wheelchair bound and my mother is in failing health also. I don't want to put myself in a position to where I can't care for them. Any words of advice are welcome. God Bless

Good Luck Debra! I too am in the pre-qualifying stages of getting the sleeve. I would like to have it done beginning of December. Some scheduling conflicts to consider though. I live on the East End of Long Island in New York.

Hello Everyone!!!
My name is Shayla and I had the VSG surgery Sept. 12 2013. I live in South Western Pennsylvania. My highest recorded weight was 350lbs. I started my 6 month insurance required supervised diet as I am sure a lot of you had to do as well weighing 333lbs. The day of surgery I weighed in at 295lbs and TODAY I was 2 weeks post op and I weighed in at 280lbs!
I use to be a member at sparkpeople but I gave up on it because I was just not losing weight and keeping it off. Since having surgery I am looking at life with a new outlook. I have a blank slate and the ability to make changes in my life. So, I have opened a NEW sparkpeople, and also started a YouTube channel ((ShaylaVSG13)) where I am going to document my journey. Please check it out and subscribe! I plan on making the rest of my life the BEST of my life.
Anyone else from South West PA?

Hi Tina! Wow you are doing fabulous - 172 pounds - you should be very proud of all your hard work and dedication to a new life style! - Welcome to Spark - I've been around a long time - sometimes very active and then lay low - but I'm back now. I have found it is a much easier and more pleasant journey to have friends and support and inspiration. and there is a lot of inspiration in this group.

hi, I'm from Missouri - a Missouri Girl through and through. My husband I are going through this together and that is a good thing. I know how hard it is to try to lose weight and have someone around who isn't - My husband needs hip replacement and it became very obvious no doctor is willing to help him if he doesn't lose weight first. He has a minimum of 150 pounds to lose before they even talk to him.

So, I had my VSG on 8/20/13 and he had Gastric Bypass 8/28/13 - I don't regret it at all (now) I will admit there were a few regrets in those first few days (more like Oh my what have I done) but now - it is a wonderful tool for weight loss. I am already feeling better.

I agree we about everyone being different - even between my husband and myself we have had different reactions.

My name is Kathy - and I'm a Missouri Girl!

Hi! I'm from Florida and like Arizona I have been on and off of sparkpeople for years. I had my VS done 1/2/13 and have lost a total of 90 lbs so far. Also like Arizona I did eight months of research even signing up for surgery. I didn't go through my primary doctor but instead went to a doctor out of the country that people I know have used. I was the best thing I ever did. This doesn't mean that I haven't hit snags along the way or had to make serious adjustments because I have.

I am more than happy to answer any questions or share what I do. But the biggest thing is to remember that we are all unique and our bodies react different to different things. Looking forward to talking with everyone.

Hi guys, I'm Shelley from Phoenix, Arizona (originally from Decatur, Illinois). I've been a SP member for quite some time, but I just joined this group because I've put a lot of thought, consideration and research into this and have finally made the decision to go forward with the sleeve surgery. The paperwork has been started, I've already had my first visit with my doctor, things are getting scheduled and I have to say that I'm more excited than nervous... but I have to make certain that I have all of my questions answered. I'm huge on research so I've really tried to do my homework.

The best research is getting people's perspectives and hearing their stories... therefore, I've become a part of this team and I'm so grateful that it's here. I'm looking forward to being an active member and getting to know you!

Hi Roz - Welcome!! And good Luck with your surgery on Wednesday.... the pre-op diet isn't fun, but it makes the surgery a lot easier when you stick with it! Feel free to ask plenty of questions, the people around here have lots of wisdom to share about surgery!

Hi! My name is Roz. I'm from The Bronx, NY. I'm scheduled for my sleeve surgery this Wednesday July 10th. This Pre-op diet is really tough I've been having a lot of challenges getting the shakes down and they make my tummy hurt. I've tried glucerna, slim fast, muscle milk light. They all taste fine I mix them in the blender with ice and it tastes like a milk shake but I can only take in one or two a day before I'm done. I'm also craving carbs and solids like crazy :( looking forward to hearing from folks on this group for support and ideas! Have a great week!

Best,
Roz emoticon

I am thinking about joining you all and having this surgery.

Would you have this surgery again now that you have gone through it? What is the positive about it for you?

Thanks in advance for replying or emailing me with your answer. I appreciate your taking the time in letting me know what you really think. Thanks again.

The group tends to "talk" a lot on the Monthly General Discussion Forum.... so find the June Discussion on the General Discussion Forum and come join us! There are so many great people around here, at all different parts of the journey, some of newly sleeved, some of us a few months out and some who are a few years out....

Look forward to hearing from you all soon! Hope that you are all doing well so far with your journey.

Hello I am Dawn, I am a lap band revision to gastric sleeve on 5/23/13. I had several problems with my band, too many to name. I am three weeks out from my revision surgery and am loving my sleeve, it was the best thing I ever did. I have lost 25 lbs and am starting to eat real food again ( soft foods, eggs, ground turkey etc ). It is great so far.

Hello I'm Angie from Ohio. I am new to this board, however not new to sparkpeople. I am considering the gastric sleeve and wanted to find out more information. I have already been pre-approved by my insurance company, my PCP has faxed the referral, and my paperwork has been taken in; I am just waiting for my consultation to be scheduled. Look forward to learning from you. Nice to meet you all!

Hi everyone! I'm from Pittsburgh, Pa. I am in the process of finishing my last few tests, then send in for insurace approval (which is pretty much in the bag!). A little nervous but excited at the same time. I have been doing tons of research as to life after gastric sleeve. I plan on using this as a stepping stone in my journey emoticon

Hello everyone, I'm from Marion Illinois. I had the sleeve procedure done on April 25th of this year. As of today I have lost 28 lbs. Right now I'm having a hard time getting in the 64 oz of fluids but I'm managing to get in my proteins (just barely). I've just started the pureed stage about a week ago.
Good luck to everyone on the journey!

Hi... I'm from Appleton, Wisconsin. I revised from the Lapband to the gastric sleeve 4/1/13. I was born and raised in California and moved to WIsconsin 17 years ago. I am pretty close to calling it quits with the cold weather here and considering moving to the Tri Cities area in TN. I am single and don't know a soul there so I am going to need all the self-confidence I can muster. I hope the the weight-loss post sleeve will help me build the confidence I need to get the heck out of this frozen tundra!

Hi, I'm from Indianapolis, IN. I will, hopefully, be getting my procedure done this summer. My paperwork should be getting submitted to the insurance company next week. I am so nervous about having major surgery. I have never had surgery before and only been under anesthesia once for a dental procedure. This is for the best though. I have a two year old daughter and need to be for her and to keep up with her. I have been exploring some fun new ways to get my exercicse in. Some coworkers and I are going to give some water zumba a try in the next few weeks after my classes are through. I would love to find more ideas and people who are in the same position as me.

Hi everyone -

My name is Rachel from Philadelphia. I've been researching gastric surgery for a couple months now and next month I'm going to one of the informational sessions at the hospital and hope to get the ball rolling then. This team has really answered so many of my questions and calmed my fears and for ONCE I'm excited about something in life and putting myself and my health first. :)

Welcome all you newbies!!!

HOOSIERPASTOR -
For me - the timing was probably less than ideal - having surgery two weeks before Easter and 3 weeks before a big retreat, is definitely challenging.... but I didn't want to put it off any longer.... so here I am a little over 1 week out - going into a Easter Holiday and just learning to say "NO THANK YOU" a lot!!!
