I had gastric sleeve surgery on June 18, 2019; I am down 45 pounds and am very happy with the decision I made. I am going to the gym (not as often as I should) and I have been fortunate that I am able to tolerate most foods. I am terrified that I will be able to snack my way out of losing weight though so I am here, for accountability and to use the tools to help me track my way to success!

Just had my surgery Monday and I feel pretty good! Tired of course, but I am moving around okay and getting my fluids down.

Hello -
I am restarting SparkPeople. I am struggling with my weight AGAIN! I had a VSG on January 19, 2016 and lost 100#. THEN I discovered that my smaller tummy could handle just about all the food groups and I went back to my old, bad habits of munching all the time. I have regained 35 pounds and am struggling to get that off and get back to good habits.

My advise to all who are considering WLS and VSG specifically - this is a tool but not a complete answer. One MUST change and get rid of the old, bad habits.

I started watching this show on Netflix called "Getting Sexy Back". It is based in Australia and I have found it to be pretty motivating. I just need to get back to the gym and eating a healthy, high protein, low carb eating plan.

I am also finding it difficult because I am alone and cooking for one is not fun. Of course, thinking back on my adult life (I am 66) I always gained weight when I was married or in a relationship!

Any positive encouragement will be helpful and taken to heart.

Hi NeedingWanting:

read your post and I want to say hang in there girl! remember this is a weight loss journey, you've managed to lose 50+lbs, WOW CONGRATS!! That is absolutely amazing! Remember, it'll take time til we start believing in ourselves and start to really see the change. Perhaps try taking photos??? Measure yourself?? It might help some. But definitely keep up the great work!

I'm here if you ever want to chat or have any questions. I was sleeved on 12/18/18 so I'm right there with ya on this journey. Best wishes, and god bless

NEEDINGWANTING - I had surgery in late October of last year. I've lost over 50 since surgery and almost 80 total and I don't see it. I had to start taking measurements and pictures. Once a month, I take a log my measurements (a good article is linked below) and take a front and side full body picture in similar cloths (basically, work out clothes that aren't too lose). Sometimes I really don't see it in the pictures either, but the measurements are undeniable. It also helped me after the first month - I lost a LOT in my legs and butt, but only 0.5 inches on my waist. But it caught up the 2nd month. It makes me feel a lot better.

Hi everyone my name is Kelly and I went for the gastric bypass on Dec 5th 2018 and woke up only getting the sleeve done due to a softball size hernia on my intestines. My starting weight was 366 and today Im currently 310. I wanted to join a support group due to me being extremely impatient and feel as if nothing is happening because I dont see the weight gone. I definitely feel it because I can now move, walk and stand longer then I have been able to in a very long time. I dont want to sound ungrateful for the 56lbs that I have lost because I am truly grateful I just wished I could see it when I see my self in the mirrors. My clothes are getting loose but you know that damn mirror just wont let me see it. Any how thanks for having me.

Hi everyone. I'm Paula from New York.

Long story short I've struggled with obesity most of my life. In 2010 I had a lap band which along with diet and exercise worked well for me until 2016 when it slipped. I was told it wouldn't be safe to reposition it and my band was removed. Over the course of the past two years, I've been struggling with weight gain. After gaining about 2/3 of the weight I had lost back I knew I couldn't lose and maintain the weight loss without the aid of surgery.

I just had my sleeve surgery on Thursday. In some ways, it feels like starting over again but I'm determined to do as well as I did on the lap band. One thing that really helped me through that process was being active on SparkPeople.

I'm so glad there is a Sleeve group and I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone here and being a cheerleader for you all.

We've got this!

Welcome PinkGlow - I had my surgery in October. Feeling GREAT now. Most of the conversation happens in the monthly topics. December has been slow, but I'm hoping January gets a bit more action.

I hope you're feeling well.

Hello

My name is Jewls, I'm from central california. I'm 31yrs old, mother and wife. I am scheduled for my GS on Jan 2, 2019 and am definitely looking forward to it. I've been working really hard for the past year to get all my pre-reqs met and now I'm approx. 19 days away from surgery.

I've attempted to lose weight on my own and managed to successfully lose about 50lbs on my own a few yrs ago and I ended up regaining it all back... it's just been brutal and quite difficult for me. So I chose to make the big decision to get weight loss surgery and I feel that it is going to be one of the best decisions i'll ever make. Looking forward to it.

I had joined a few FB support groups and ended up leaving shortly after because people were just so darn mean!! Putting each other down, judging and criticizing everything! Could not deal with the negativity but I feel alone. So I'm hoping to make some friends and be able to provide and get some support from other fellow members.

Feel free to read my bio on my profile and msg me if you'd like. Thanks for listening.

CROBERTSON66 - keep hanging in there. I had surgery 10/29. The first few days of the pre-op diet were brutal, but then it evened out. Good luck with surgery. I'm feeling pretty back to normal now - just a little tired. And I've been cleared to start trying pretty much any healthy food and exercise. So remember in that first day post-op when you're sore, etc - it will get better. And it gets better quickly.

Also - a lot of the conversations on this board seem to happen on the monthly chat threads. December has been kind of slow, but it may pick up after the new year?

Hi Everyone,
My name is Charlene. I am scheduled for surgery on December 20th. I have been trying to lose weight my whole life, I am 52 years old and am tired of struggling with my weight which is why I chose to get this surgery. Since starting the program with Kaiser 7 months ago I have lost a total of 38 lbs. One of the nurses told me that I didn't look like I belong there but I worked hard to take those lbs. off and I need to go the rest of the way. I really don't have any support because I don't want anyone to know I am getting weight loss surgery ( I know I should be honest but this is my personal choice) I started my pre-surgical high protein clear liquid diet 4 days ago all I can think about is food but I am hanging in there. I feel very weak today but I will continue to push forward. It's nice to meet you all!

Charlene

Hello Everyone,

My name is Brian, 54 years old and I am 6'1" with a weight of 378 pounds. I start my pre-surgery diet today. Surgery is scheduled for December. 17th.
Technically I do not have to start the diet until next week but I want to start early, especially after Thanksgiving. Thought I would try to join a group as I start this adventure.

Hello. My name is Benita and during a very stressful period in my life, I managed to gain about 125 pounds. While the stress (most of it anyway) has passed, the weight gain remains. Right now, I'm about 58 years old and 130 pounds over my highest pregnancy weight. I walk daily and and, for the most part, eat a very healthy diet. I'm Vegan, so many of my meals are nutrient dense and, unfortunately often calorie dense. But, my nutritionist says that I'm not consistently getting enough calories. Strange, huh?

In any case, I've recently begun having problems with high blood pressure and sleep apnea. I'm seriously considering gastric sleeve because I feel the weight is dangerous to my long term health. I would appreciate any advice and suggestions....especially from any Vegans out there.

Thanks for listening and for your help.

Hi, all! My name is Beverly and I am currently in the process of finishing my requirements for VSG surgery. I have several other physical health problems that have my surgeon working closely with me. And if truth be told, I'm scared of the surgery. But I need to do something - so here I go with both feet (and most of my stomach)!

Looking forward to meeting you and being part of this group! HUGS!

Hello everyone: I am returning to Sparks and this team to reconnect with a great support group. I'm 52, sleeved almost 4 years ago with a revision 6 months ago due to reflux. I've lost the weight that I should have, so says my Nut, but I honestly have 30 to go to be considered in my range. I took up running 2 years ago and really loved it, to my surprise; but, injury has slowed my progress and derailed my efforts. I really want to get back on track, eat what I should and be blissfully Happy!! Just some small goals lol.
I hope everyone's having a wonderful 4th!

See you all soon!

Hello Teeny here, I am 302 lbs and was on the pre op diet and was at 316 then my Dr. wants me to have a special gall bladder test due to major upper right pain and still waiting but in the mean time my new scheduled date is now 06/26 and original date was set for 05/15.. yesterday so yes.. I kind of went off and gained back 4 lbs lickety split and now today starting the pre op diet again and will be on it until surgery so that gives me plenty of time to lose more weight I am so scared of doing this surgery because of the death rate and complications so because my husband lost 70 lbs in the last year If I could do what he does all would be good but I tend to lose it and be weaker than him, still wondering if I should cancel the whole damn thing. I am 56 and sometimes feel like a spring chicken and sometimes feel fat and old. thanks all have a great day.. I'm starting with my premier protein shake. I appreciate a group I can vent and communicate with.

Hi all,

I am Judy McKinney (neon-cat) and I had my gastric sleeve surgery on October 5, 2016. I joined Spark people last year but did not commit myself. Last Thursday was my one year visit. I have lost 67 lbs and 27". I am right on target for my weight and body fat. But I have to work on eating more protein, exercise and taking my vitamins.

I have been married for 40 years, 2 adult children and 2 grandsons. We moved to rural Central Texas about 20 years ago and I retired from Vehicle & Voter Registration in February. I am having a good time with retirement.

I need the support of others that are on this journey.

Hi all, I'm Sarah and am scheduled for surgery 6/26/17, In looking at comments by others I have discovered that there are differences in diets with different programs, My preop liver shrinking diet is only for one weekend clear likids are only for 2nd say post op then one day full liquids then blended diet for the remainder of first month.

Now that I have a date I am feeling like== wow it is finally real. A bit nervous i guess, but looking forward to the changes.

I was able to loose just under 250 pounds on my own but gained back 150 of it. At first I felt ashamed and like a failure, but when I heard the statistics of obese individuals success of weight loss with diet and exercise alone== it was 3% and the latest is it is down to 1% I realized I wasn't a failure. That was when I seriously started thinking about bariatric surgery. Took me some time to come to terms with it because my mother died of colon cancer but obesity is a big cause of it so then I was ready for surgery. Unfortunately,my insurance stopped covering the surgery after I started pursuing it. Ultimately I had to change jobs to get insurance coverage. It has been a long road, but I am ready.

I just started the two week liver shrinking pre-op diet monday and have already found myself struggling.
had a set back yesterday, which makes me wonder, if i have a set back this early how is it going to be for me when the surgery is done.
i am feeling very confused and already, ALREADY, beginning to have moments of depression.
I just wish i could get answers, i set and meditate and try to hear my own thoughts, while the voices in my mind and all around me pull me and push me and i am just not sure if this is normal or just me.
one thing i have found is i dont get many responses from this team, i have created one or two new posts, no one responded, i have private messaged a few members to discuss the surgery but no one responded.
i feel very lost and while i have only 11 days until my surgery date, i feel more confused than i have during this whole process.

Hi Everyone - My sleeve surgery was the end of October. Monday I started regular foods. Everything is going well. My abdomen is still a tad sore but thankful for the good 'ole binder. Working on upping my walking, stationary biking, eating slow and following all of the guidelines. I am looking forward to continuing to honor my sleeve and to use it to the best of my ability. I am off all of my medications except for allergy. A couple of meds I stopped taking prior to my surgery because the weight I lost on my doctor supervised nutritional program improved my health. I look forward to being a part of the team.

Hello all! Newbie here. I was sleeved on September 12th. What a hard journey this has been, but it gets a little easier every day.
I just turned 50 this year, so thought it was a time for new beginnings. I have 3 grandchildren under three and I want to be able to keep up with them, and watch them grow up.

I've lost myself as I've gained weight, and my fondest wish is to find ME again.

Hello,

I stated on My Bariatric Solution August 22/ 2016. I weighed 201 lbs had the vertical sleeve surgery on October 5, 2016.

I had my one week follow up today and weighed 175 lbs. I am 65 years old, married for 39 years, have 2 grown children.

I decided to take control of my weight because I could have a heart attack or a stroke. I am on liquid diet with protein drinks. Taking it slowly. Only used the pain medication 2 times. I tire easily and will go back to work on Monday.

Just found this group an decided to join you.

HI everyone! I'm Mare. I'm having my gastric sleeve surgery in two weeks (currently started the 3 protein shakes a day fast) and I'm excited and slightly nervous. I lost 75lbs on my own, but I still had so much to lose and it was moving so slow that I decided to pursue the gastric sleeve. I think it's just going to be getting through these two weeks leading up to the surgery when all I can have are three protein shakes a day.

Hello Pre Sleeve and Post Sleevers:
My name is Darlene, I am 50 years old, and I am currently one week away from the loser's bench. I have been on an all liquid diet since June 1st and have lost almost 10 pounds in just this one week!
I am starving though...LOL
I am kind of a bitch too...... moody is not the word.
Trying to keep my mind off of food, the surgery and cons of this all.
Anyway, I am from MA and would love to hear back from you, and this time next week I'll probably be under the knife.

Welcome to the team. I was straight to the sleeve so don't have experience with that, but we have folks from all varieties here so I imagine you will meet up with someone who has. Good luck!

Hello Everyone! My name is Paula and Im getting a lapband to sleeve revision around December. I'm currently in the insurance qualifying phase. I lost over 100 lbs with the band but have gained 50 lbs back. The problem with the band is that because of sliming and throwing up I was not able to eat things such as fresh veggies, tuna fish, or chicken that was not freshly cooked. Has anyone else had a band to sleeve revision? I'm hoping to hang out here and see what you guys have to teach me. Thanks for the open group!

Hello! I think I posted in the wrong place earlier. But . . .I am back on Spark after a bit of a hiatus (140 pounds later). I had VSG on March 16, 2016. This is a new journey for me. Nice to meet everyone!

Hello everyone. This is my first day back on Spark in a couple of years so I will doing a lot of updates this evening after work. I had my sleeve done 10/12/16. I had lost a total of 57 pounds by the middle of March and since then I have hit a stall. I am now stuck at 261.

I have been overweight most of my life and had thyroid problems. February of 2014 I had my thyroid removed due to cancer and I piled on the weight. No matter how much I dieted or exercised. My highest weight was 317. The day of Surgery I was 310. I am very happy with the results so far. I am looking forward to getting to know all of you.

Hello, everyone. I'm new to the team, but have been on and off of SP for a few years now.

I recently had my first consultation at U of I for bariatric surgery. I'm still in the three month compliance phase for insurance/surgery, so I'm pretty much at the beginning of my journey at this point. I haven't yet decided which of the two surgeries I want and am hoping that from reading through these forums and seeing other folks' experiences I can be a little more informed about the outcomes of each.

Hi all,
I was sleeved Oct. 14, Also gallbladder & hiatial hernia. I'm still very much still in the healing process. If there is one thing I learned....age and my weight have caught p with me and made the healing process a bit more challenging than it would have been when I was a spring chicken.
I have so many questions and i'm very terrified of failure. I hope to sit a while and get to know y'all

HI everyone, I was a sparker 6 yrs.ago and did very well. Now I am almost 2 1/2 months out from having been sleeved. Best thing I ever did for myself. I was sleeved July 16th 2015. First month was rough. I think I am finally getting the hang of this eating thing. I went to Mexico and had my sleeve surgery. Was a great experience. Dr. Alverez was awesome.
My highest weight was 252 and surgery weight was 238. Current weight is 202. Have lost 50 lbs. now. Do my best to stay away from carbs and sugar. Don't always get in my protein or water but just keep trying. Walked around the zoo in Tulsa, OK. 11, 548 steps Sat. You would think I would have seen a drop but no. It's OK, I didn't gain this over night and the weight won't come off over night. Good luck to all of us on this journey to a healthier us! :)

Hello everyone!! I used sparkpeople before but left for a long time.. but I'm back!
I was sleeved September 16th 2015! Had hernia repair at same time.
I'm still sore and hard to get around but I'm not taking pain meds until bedtime.
My incisions look great!
Food has been weird. I've had sugar free Apple sauce with isopure unflavored protein mix mixed in, I had some vegetable soup strained and mixed proteine into it also. It was so weird when I looked down at my bowl and I was full and so was it. Had one more bite, got weak and said oooo i over did it. So I went and laid down
I started at.240hw. Surgery weight was 198. No idea current since it's only been a few days and I'm just now finally able to release this gas. I have been pacing my home and yesterday walked to my mom's around the block and back. Can't wait to get to next stage of diet but feeling good

So glad to see you here SpyGoose and DeptyDawg! We're glad to help any way we can.

Personally, I'm not necessarily "sick" of the protein drinks but I do wish I could find some ready made in alternate flavors. I like the Premier Protein shakes but they only have chocolate, vanilla and strawberry.

I'm coming up on 9 months post-op and still drink one every day.

You may need them for some time to come. When it is hard to get the protein in, the shakes come in real handy, but I remember when I had mine, broth and soups never tasted so good! Now to this day, I can't look at jello or popcycles!

Welcome to the team, glad to see another guy join in!

Carolee, I started at 387 lbs, and my goals is to see below 200 also. My doctor tells me that my goal is unrealistic, but I will continue to work on it. I have gotten down to 245 but keep hovering around 250-255. This being summer and I always seem to find poison ivy, and usually on steroids, my weight goes up, but I know it is temporary. I got lazy and slacked on the exercise and the weight loss stopped. I learned my lesson. I am only 1 1/4 year post sleeve, so I don't consider myself a veteran, but I think you are doing the right approach. Go back to what you learned when you were sleeved and go from there. I am learning also that this is just a tool not a solution. This is something that we will have to work on for the rest of our lives. Good luck we are here to help each other stay on track.

Hello All, I have been gone a couple of years but I have been sleeved for over 3 years, I never got below 200 lbs and gotten side tracked. I was thrilled to be able to hike again but with the longer distances I needed to consume higher carbs. This summer it has been wet and buggy and I broke my hand which slowed down my physical activity.

So now I am focusing solely on weight loss, My daughter and grandchildren moved to Florida so now I have all the time I need to deal with this obesity problem. I have started the sleeve rules back up ( 45 minutes between eating and drinking) protein first and forget about fancy recipes and I have joined weight watchers to keep me accountable.

I was hoping some successful vetern sleevers would sparkfriend me to give me some guidance emoticon

Welcome to the team. We have member at various stages of the Sleeve. I had mine a year and 4 months ago, and the only regret I have is that I waited so long to do it. Join us on the June Chat forum. That is where most conversations take place and if you post a question, you will be the most answers. Again, welcome and good luck!

Hi I,m Jennifer and I am in the pre surgery component of bariatric surgery. I would like to have the sleeve done but I am waiting for my one on one with my doctor to determine if this is the best fit for me. I have ruled out the lap band and I dont really want my intestines rerouted with the bypass. Anyway I am happy to have found this team for help and support. emoticon

Welcome, Pam, and kudos to you for making such a life changing decision. I'm sure everyone on the team will be delighted to help you through your journey -- you can find others who are just making the decision, some who recently had the surgery, some who are struggling through the adjustment period with you (I'm personally seven months out), and some who are complete veterans. We all need the occasional slap to the back of the head, someone to cheer us on when we get it right and someone to commiserate with when we're doing the right things but not making any progress (it WILL happen eventually, I promise). We're glad to be here for you.

Hi, I am Pam. I had surgery May 13th. I am down 23 pounds. I have a long ways to go and I am sure I will need help, encouragement and a smack of reality all along the way. Today, I am just working on getting the scale to start moving again.

Disapointed because you lost a lot or they were expecting you to have lost even more?

I don't know why they would be disappointed. That sounds like a lot to me. You have exactly the right attitude- as long as the scale is going down, you are doing something right!

Hello all, I started my liquid protein countdown at 237 on March 11, 2015. I had my sleeve on March 25. I am now 47 pounds down. My sleeve team is disappointed at my rate of loss, but I am okay with it. It took a long tome to pick the weight up, and as long as it goes down, I don't care how fast it happens.

Thanks. I buy a lot of clothes on clearance! I'm still struggling with exercise. I'll keep trying to find my way!

I bought my suit for 60% off, and I bought it off the rack, in the regular clothes section not Big - N - Tall. I did have to get pleated pants for comfort verse flat-front, but I was determined to get it in the regular cloths part! What a feeling!

Hi Keri
Welcome
Congrats on losing 90 lbs it's great.
I know what you mean . It's a challenge for all of us but well worth it
I had mine 5 months before you and have Lost 116 lbs . It does get harder when you are close to your goal weight but we have to keep pushing .

Bob , we deserve it , after all this effort we need to have clothes that fits . At least some .
I have to admit I am loving all the shopping but not the whole in the wallet. I buy everything on sale . I have to say ,almost everything I bought for this winter are to big and If I lose my last 16 lbs I need another winter wardrobe ......

Hi Keri, welcome to the team. I am like you don't regret it a moment. Except for having to spend so much money on clothes. I brought my summer clothes up and I have no shorts that fit. Time to go buying again!
