I am new to Spark People, but not new to recovery. I will have 3 years in and I have been maintaining a 115 pound weight loss. However, I have been in relapse for the last 3 months. 2 days abstinent today, and so grateful to be here. Detoxing and hanging in there.

Welcome to the Team and to sparkpeople!

I am a member of OA,but I can only tell you that *I* am a compulsive overeater. I cannot tell someone else if they are or not. There is a list of questions, however, on the oa.org website that may help you to determine if you are a compulsive overeater.

Hope that helps!

Hi Guys,

I'm new to SP and new to the group. I track my food intake everyday in the MyFitnessPal (MFP) App and consistently eat ~1000 more calories each day than my plan suggests. This leads me to believe maybe I have a serious issue with overeating. I have never thought to consider something like OA before, but the positives are that I do believe in a higher power (God) and may benefit from a group like this. Would love some feedback, is this group right for me? What does it look like to incorporate OA into a daily life?

Looking for SP friends and encouragement, Check out my first blog post.

Hi Hope! Welcome to the Team, and welcome back to OA!

Something that helped me with Step 1, as well as some of the sponsees I have worked with the last 3 years, is to take an inventory/eating history. You can write down, in black and white, what you can remember about your eating and over-eating history - the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Sometimes, looking at it all and reflecting on it all helps to realize our helplessness over food.

For me, it was the realization that biting the ends off sausages that I was going to serve to the rest of my family, wasn't, in fact, sane.
emoticon emoticon emoticon

Also, included in there was eating so much at a work party, that I had to stand in the bathroom stall, with my cheek resting against the cool tile of the wall, willing myself not to throw up all over the new dress I was wearing.

Hello all.
I'm brand new to Sparkpeople and am returning to OA after a long hiatus, and am still learning how to navigate all of this. I started reading a 12 Step edition of the New Testament a couple nights ago.....and I am still trying to swallow Step One. Unfortunately, I am still swallowing a lot of other junk (food) in the meantime. There aren't many meetings available where I live and my work schedule prevents me from getting to the few that are nearby, so I hope I might align myself with the right "team" here to address what is really driving me to eat.
Thank you for being here.
Hope

I went to my first OA meeting last night. Not really sure how this works, and am definitely feeling alone and unsure.

Hi everyone,

I'm Vikki and I'm a compulsive eater. I'm new to SP and 12 steps generally. I can't get to any OA meetings but would really like a sponsor. Can anyone help?

Hi - I'm Dawn and I am a compulsive overeater. I attended my first OA meeting last week and will attend my 9th meeting tonight. I new the first time I walked into a meeting that I belonged. I haven't decided upon my home meeting or gotten a sponsor yet, but I'm reading the materials and sharing at the meetings. One day at a time I will keep coming back.

Cj, I need thank you so much for that post, I had a think about what I wanted from a sponsor and realised I wanted a sort of mothering personality who would take care of me, but that personality probably isn't the best choice for me for lots of reasons. So I will reconsider the other abstinent members and ask my higher power for guidance.
Thank you so much for your help. emoticon

I find that helpful as well - to remember that we are all just bums in the seats. No one is in charge, we are all in the same boat (sorry, mixed metaphors there).

Many OA's I know suggest/encourage newcomers to get a sponsor as soon as possible while you are still on the "high" of joining and eager to learn and work. I got a sponsor about 2 weeks in, so you may be right on time for you.

It may be tricky if the one person you felt a connection to is struggling right now. I would pray about it, or ask others for suggestions on whether to ask this person. You could also approach them and give them a mini-sponsor/sponsee interview before making any decisions. Giving service and sponsoring can be incredibly helpful not only to the sponsee but also the sponsor. I know that sponsoring really cements my own abstinence. However, keep in mind that a sponsor who is not abstinence may not be clear-headed enough to assist you with your program.

I will pray that your Higher Power will guide you to the person who will help you most.

Keep in mind that sometimes the right person for us is not the person we would ordinarily think of as being the best for us. Our Higher Powers can have a great sense of humour, lol!

cj
ETA (edited to add ) - You're very right - it is early days yet. You will learn more and gain knowledge about different aspects of program as you keep coming back. You don't need to know it all at once.

Thanks so much for your lovely welcome!

I do need a sponsor, I'm very lost! I'm not sure how to approach the issue though, as there seems to be only 3 people who are available to sponsor, and the only one I have a connection with is struggling a lot at the minute, so I'm unsure. I've only been a member for just over a week now, so I also don't want to rush things!
I have the big book and the 12 steps and traditions, I read a piece every day, and journal a lot.

It's little things that make me feel lost, like the ettiquette of meetings and understanding the significance of "getting on your knees"
I keep telling myself I'm very new to this and I need to give up the control, that I can't know everything after 3 meetings!

I do really enjoy this group though, and find it a great comfort that there are so many people who started off just like me!

All we have is today.

Hello, Robyn!

I'm glad you've found us.
Have you found any potential sponsors at your face to face meetings? Or perhaps a phone list to use to call another OA when you are feeling like you need some support?

Do you have any literature you can read in-between meetings as well? I find when I can't go to a meeting, that reading from the OA 12 Steps and 12 Traditions book or the "Big Book" (the Alcoholics Anonymous book) to be extremely helpful, and makes me feel like I'm with other OA's.

Hi, I'm Robyn and I'm in Ireland.

I've very recently joined oa, and I'm only able to attend 2 meetings a week, but feel like I need more support than that! After a Google search, I found you lovely people, and have gotten so much inspiration from the posts. I just had to join in!

I haven't been abstinent yet, but I'm much better than I was, I've stopped restricting, and I've eliminated a lot of my trigger foods. I'm working on step 3, and letting things happen in higher powers time, and not mine. I'm usually in such a rush to do everything perfectly that I burn out and fail at the first hurdle so I give up forever.

Thanks everyone for giving me the opportunity to say hello and read your stories!

Welcome to all the newcomers!

I see I have missed quite a few new faces!

I see that some people are struggling with their idea of a Higher Power. I have heard other OA's say that they, too, have struggled. They find it helpful sometimes to write a job description for their HP, and what they need that HP to do for them in their life. That usually helps them to see what God is for them.

Bea - I was reading in the OA For Today book a couple of months back and it was talking about the struggle with food and how we can be "doing everything right", but the food still calls to us. The person's reflection in the book stated that yes, we need to do all the right things (use the tools of the program), but we still need to put down the food. That was really helpful to me!

Hi my name is Bea! I live in Washington State.

I have been involved in OA on and off over the last 20 years. I have had a sponsor in the past.
I am really struggling right now to control my food. I have a great deal of stress in my life currently .....and food seems to be the answer......NOT! Never has been, NEVER will be.....so why do I keep going back to it?
I am in the process of commiting my food to paper and working toward abstaining from flour wheat sugar........One day at a time.

I am thankful for God in my life, and hope to be a giving, sharing, active member of this team.

Happy Mom's Day! Happy Friday!

Each day is precious!

Kaliswalker - thank you! I guess I just need to change my mindset about what a higher power means. I like your description of what it means to you. I have not listened to the OA podcasts, I'll look into those :)

I understand your dilemma with having higher power. This week I had some enlightenment. I now understand that my high power speaks to me through my sponsor and my fellows. I find peace and understanding in my life when I seek there guidance and support. I hope this helps.

Have you listened to OA podcasts? That is what helped me get launched in my program. I learned that each evening I had to plan my meals for the next day, then the next day stick to the plan. Also I developed my red list foods.

I think I posted my intro in the wrong place and can't figure out how to delete it...so I'll copy it here since this seems to be the place to post intros!

Hi there, I'm a newbie. I have been a compulsive overeater for as long as I can remember, but am only recently realizing that is what I am/was. I very recently realized that I have an addiction and need help. I've done a but of research on OA, and to be honest I'm not sure how to integrate the steps into my belief system (the religious aspect is difficult for me as I do not believe in a higher power per se). That being said, I do recognize that I need help and am hoping this is the place for me. I'm overwhelmed and not sure how to even start working the steps, etc. I don't have a schedule that will allow me to attend in person meetings but I'm hoping to find a phone meeting to join.

Hello
You can call me Mollie. Not new to SparkPeople. The following is is what I believe and what I stand for:

MOLLIEMAEN...A Clean Slate 2-20-16

I have lost 160 pounds and am trying to lost 52 pounds. My fitness will be limited and I need to address compulsive overeating. The following is a prayer that I recite every day at least once and sometimes more often.

God grant me the serenity:
To accept the things I cannot change
The courage to change that I can
And the wisdom to know the difference. Amen

When I Say "I Am A Christian"

When I say "I am a Christian", I am not shouting that "I am clean living." I'm whispering "I was lost but now I am found and forgiven."

When I say "I am a Christian," I don't speak of it with pride. I'm confessing that I stumble and Christ to be my guide.

When I say "I am a Christian," I'm not trying to be strong. I am professing that I am weak and need His strength to carry on.

When I say "I am a Christian," I am not bragging of success. I'm admitting I have failed and need God to clean my mess.

When I say "I am a Christian," I'm not claiming to be perfect. My flaws are far to visible but God believes I am worth it.

When I say "I am a Christian," I still feel the sting of pain. I have my share of heartaches, so I call upon His name.

When I say "I am a Christian," I am not holier than thou. I am a simple sinner who received God's good grace somehow. (Anonymous)

Hello All!

I am an overeater, fast food junkie. I joined the group awhile ago, but just haven't MADE the time to sit down and introduce myself or even do anything with Spark People. I have been a member of Spark for a very long time. Helped me lose my first 100 pounds...but I am finding myself creeping back up.

Anyways, I will post more later, I spose I am supposed to introduce myself. :) So HI! My name is Jen. How are you doing today???? :)

Hi, my name is Stella and I'm a compulsive over eater and new to the group. . I went to OA years ago but only recently has a group started in my town. I'm not overweight but have a problem with overeating half the week and dieting the other half. I decided to go the 3 planned meals a day with maybe a planned snack each day. This has been working for me.

Hi, my name is Kathleen, and I haven't been with OA very long. There is only one Face-to-Face meeting here, and there was some mix up about where it was located. I have been attending the phone meetings. My Sponsor has challenged me to attend specific meetings, as well as listening to recordings on days I cannot attend at the scheduled time.

I have been anorexic and now morbidly obese. I lose the weight only to gain it back. There is no way that could not say that I am powerless over food and my life is unmanageable.

Hello team... My name is Snow and I'm completely new to OA. I don't have a schedule that allows for in-person meetings, so I have been attending online meetings. I have had an issue with overeating since I was a child and am now at a place where I realize I cannot handle it on my own. I kind of already knew this, but now that I've been back on SP for a while, I realize that my issues with food are "special" and unlike some of the issues that others are dealing with. This realization led me to OA. I look forward to taking part on this team.

Hi everyone...I have known I've been an overeater for years and have tried dieting but realized that until I get this overeating under control I will never lose any weight. Food is almost like a drug, It is hard to pass up and to easy to say, "I will start again tomorrow." I defiantly need some help, support and motivation.

emoticon SONFLOWERGAMMY and SARAMARIE!

I know some OA members who don't live near face to face meetings take in phone meetings or on-line meetings. I believe there is information on the oa.org website, if you are interested.

My name is Saramarie. I am going on one day. My food is processed foods/fast food/processed carbs. I'm really trying to find a sponsor and in the mean time I have this group and an AA meeting I go to that's in the area but I can't talk to an AA sponsor if they're not dealing with a food issue.
