How wonderful about your twin great grandsons!

And I'm sure your granddaughter is grateful that you are able to assist her now.

Enjoy your visit with your niece!

I'm still here, just extremely busy right now. As I said, I have new twin great grandsons and am having to help my granddaughter (who lives in the same building) all I can. Also, a niece is coming to stay with me next month, so busy clearing space for her things.

However, I'm still trying to practice OA guidelines as much as I can. It's not easy, ever, but I'm trying one step at a time.

Thanks again for the great advice. Yes, I know of the Big Book and the OA steps and OA traditions, and have all three somewhere in boxes that still hold my books. I just moved here last Sept and am still working on unpacking and such.

Thank you for your posts (and all the great answers everyone else!).

I have learnt in program a few things about God and Higher Powers.

As Harlan, an OA speaker, has said (as well as many other OA members) - he knows 2 things about God:

(1) There is one

and

(2) it's not him

Are you familiar with the "Big Book"? That is the blue book called Alcoholics Anonymous that has been approved for use in OA. The first several chapters may be very useful to you and can be found and read online at no charge (simply search "Big Book").

The beginnings of AA explains very clearly Bill W.'s experience with God and his misgivings about the whole concept as well. It describes how he came to a place of acceptance in the idea of a Power greater than himself and how that helped him tremendously with his addiction.

Also, the chapter in the Big Book entitled "We Agnostics" may also be interesting to you.

Some suggestions I have heard from others in program include:

(1) act as if - act as if you *do* believe in a Higher Power, and continue the program that way

(2) write out a job description for your own Higher Power, including those things that you feel are important for that role in your (nobody else's) life - for example, if I had suffered abuse and violence in my past, I would want an extremely powerful and strong Higher Power to protect me; if I had problems with feeling fear and scolded as a child with the notion of God, then I would want my Higher Power to be extremely kind and merciful, etc. You get the idea.

(3) borrow someone else's Higher Power until you can figure out yours. Mine is tremendous and very powerful if you wish to borrow mine for a bit.

(4) remember that the first three Steps (especially Step 3) only require you to *choose* to continue the rest of the Steps as if there were a Higher Power acting in your life; it is in working Steps 4-9 that you will be brought closer to your Higher Power and help you to figure it all out more.

A former sponsor of mine believed in nothing when she began program. A sponsor told her to act as if, and to pray the Serenity Prayer, the Step 3 Prayer, and the Step 7 prayer. She did it every day for weeks, not believing anything and just reciting words. by the end of 2-3 weeks, she realized that she was beginning to believe in a Power greater than herself!

I pray that you may find your Higher Power as well.
Good luck to you.

Thank you for the warm welcome! I may not be able to participate or post for a little while as my Granddaughter (only grandchild!) gave birth to twin boys last evening! And since I'm in the same building as she is (but two flights of stairs apart) I will be helping her a lot when she gets home. So I'm getting a lot of exercise (yay!) going up and down stairs, just need o let my higher self take charge of my eating challenges. Which is the whole point, isn't it? Except I myself must do all I can to help myself with all my health and life challenges.

So............. I'll keep coming back! LOL I have been close friends with a lot of 12 Step folks (for various reasons) so I know the basic program. Just have to trust and turn it over.

Welcome!
If a meeting or individual 12-step member correctly follows the traditions, yes, your higher power can be anything. It is suggested that it be greater than yourself, and loving and caring.
If you live in the US, especially certain parts, the meetings tend to take on the overarching culture to a greater or lesser extent. As I recovered over the years I found my search for HP going in a different direction (polytheism) and if you stick around long enough you will find lots of different ideas.

Hi Julia Welcome. I understand about the male God, our Higher power can be anything. It can be a turnip if that works for you. It's your HP not mine, nor anyone else's. It's anything that you feel that has more power than you do, at any given moment. I love cookies, they just jump into my shopping cart and get thru the checkout without me seeing them. Of course when I get home, I can't just throw them away so I get them. I've tried freezing them, did you know that you can still eat frozen cookies?

Best of thoughts on your journey to a healthy and happy lifestyle

And I am a compulsive overeater! I have attended OA meetings many years ago, but had a problem with the Higher Power concept, plus it WORKED! and that scared me! My problem with Higher Power is I can NOT accept the traditional concept of a male god. I am trying to believe in something greater than myself, but progress has been slow. Sometimes I totally believe, other times not so much. And this was not what I planned to talk about in my intro! LOL

Anyway, I'm here. I'm 70, single (gratefully!), currently live alone, and have multiple health issues, including Heart Disease and Chronic pain from an array of sources. I started trying to get more exercise and eat better last fall, in an effort to improve my health (have you noticed every thing says exercise is the remedy for almost anything?)!

I've been a member of Spark People for quite some time, but never actively participating in anything. I do love it here, and believe it can help in many ways. However, I procrastinate big time! But enough of that, onward and upward!
